Check out these chicks!

Farm Chicks 1

Have you heard of these chicks before? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago. It was really kind of a weird little coincidence. I was in the bookstore picking up Pioneer Woman Cookbooks for a recent giveaway and my eyes locked in on a book called The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. Loved the title and the design, but because I was over my limit on books for the day, make that month, all I did was thumb through the pages really quickly before I made myself leave.

But then, just two days later I received an email from none other than Serena, one of THE Farm Chicks. Seriously. Out of the blue. Two days later. Does stuff like that happen to you, too? Strange coincidences? It does to me all the time.

(Hmmm… The Pioneer Woman and The Farm Chicks. That’s kinda weird, too. Okay, I’m moving to the country.)

Anyway, it was a really short email message that said she wanted to send me something.

Curious, I said, ok. (I like surprises.)

Farm Chicks 6

And boy was I surprised when several days later I received a package full of all of these sweet, sweet gift tags.

Farm Chicks 2

Some with little cakes.

Farm Chicks 5

And others with sweet messages.

Farm Chicks 4

Plus there were all these fun recipe cards. (Forgive me for the extra blurriness. I was playing with different settings on my camera.)

Farm Chicks 3

Some even had Christmas themes.

I had no idea they had all these cute products plus a cookbook. Impressive.

Farm Chicks 13

Speaking of their book, I had to run out to the bookstore and get it right away.

Farm Chicks 14

Farm Chicks 8

Wish I had seen this before trying to make a pie last week. Could have come in handy.

Farm Chicks 9

The Farm Chicks love some pie. And the book has several yummy ones like this.

Farm Chicks 10

Plus, it has fun, do-it-yourself projects throughout. I’ve never made scones, but if I do, I want a scone cozy to go with them. Cozy scones. Yes. I want my scones to be cozy. Adorableness. Cuteness doesn’t quite cut it here.

Farm Chicks 11

Hi Serena. Thanks for sending me all the fun stuff. I love it.

Especially the necklace.

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys about the necklace. Well, it has a cake on the front of it and it’s just darling.

See.

Farm Chicks 7

And, since Serena sent me two of them… well…

Would you like one? Then, we can both look super cute, adorned in cake.

Farm Chicks 12

I’ll even throw in some of my gift tags and recipe cards, too. I’m a sharer.

  5. My family is Minnesotan, and every Christmas we eat lefse, a Swedish flat potato pancake (sort of like a potato tortilla) rolled up with butter and cinnamon sugar in it. Since moving to the south, it’s the thing I miss most about the frozen north!

    Merry Christmas!

  18. It’s a toss up between my mother’s molasses crinkle cookies and my grandmother’s steamed carrot pudding (even my uncle, who hates all plum pudding related desserts, admits that it’s fairly excellent!). Both are staples of my Christmas dinner desserts.

  19. I have an Aunt who makes mini-fruit tarts, and ever since I can remember those have been my favorite holiday dessert. she makes them in apricot and raspberry… simple but SO delicious!

candy canes come in a close second :)

  21. My mom’s delicious made from scratch bran muffins. So Heavenly….

  22. I love all the treats at Christmas time. Especially the chocolate chip cookies we make Santa on Christmas eve. This year I’m actually making mint oreo truffle pops for all my neighbors. And for dessert on Christmas day we keep it simple with hot fudge sundaes. Mmmm…. December’s delicious.

  23. My favorites are the homemade candies, especially the chocolate covered coconut balls. Yummo.
    gourdsrmylife(at)yahoo(dot)com

  24. Hi Bakerella!

I ADORE your blog and love to make all of your goodies! My favorite christmas treat is my mom’s homemade chocolate and peanut butter double-decker fudge! De-lish! I hope I win!

  25. You meant favoriteS, right? Definitely extra emphasis on that “s”, there. Ha!

    1. My Mom’s Peanut Butter Pie. A pain to make (this thing is all from scratch, no cool whip found anywhere in it!) but she only makes it for my brothers’ birthday and holidays. I now make it for everyone I work with for every holiday since I don’t live near her and can’t beg Mom to make it for me!

    2. My Grandma’s Molasses Cookies. Why do sugar cookies for Christmas? You gotta step it up a notch, you know? We always made Grandma’s recipe and then frosted those! Mom’s rule? If you decide to go overboard on the frosting and decoration then you are responsible for eating that one yourself!

  26. I like anything to do with cookies or candies you can get only at Christmas time. I like Candy Cane cookies, but they are a pain to make. I am interested in baking doggie treats. Can you come up with something neat for that?

  27. Sugar Cookies!!!…Of course iced and decorated all pretty! :)

  28. Probably chocolate topped salted caramels although I do love pumpkin rolls too.

    Love those cards!

  29. I absolutely LOVE maple nut fudge! I only allow myself to make it for Christmas…cause I’ll eat the whole pan! I make it the same day I’m assembling goodie baskets for my friends… so they actually get some.

    Here’s my recipe… http://peacefulcottagerecipes.blogspot.com/2009/07/maple-nut-fudge.html

    Merry Christmas!

  31. I love the Martha Washington balls! It’s chocolate-y, coconutty, ooey-gooey goodness!

  37. I like Christmas cookies. Too hard to narrow it down to one type. I love making lots and lots of cookie varieties at Christmas!

  38. Skillet cookies or balls… not sure exactly what the name of them is. My Gma used to make them every year for Christmas and hide some just for me in the freezer.. now that she has passed away I never get them anymore… What I would do for a peek into her little recipe collection that was only in her head..

  39. My great grandma’s apple sauce cake… its a spice cake that’s so delicious. Except she made it with nuts and raisins and such, and I prefer to make myself some cupcakes without all those. I add them for everyone else though.

  40. Frosted christmas cookies!! Its so much fun making them, but eating them is even better!

  41. That is a tough question to answer! I really like fudge and I like apple pie, too. I did not make apple pie for Thanksgiving, because I knew I’d eat too much of it, but I really missed it and I’m making one for Christmas for sure!
I NEED some cute foodie gift labels, too!

  42. Seven layer bar…you know, that wonderful concoction of graham crackers, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, coconut, and sweetened condensed milk…..yuuuummmmmm.

  43. I love love love cheesecake at Christmas…I do a no-bake Cheesecake that’s rich and creamy…and sometimes I’ll add randomness to it by putting in some cocoa powder or some chocolate shavings…crushed up cookies…etc. =)

    Happy Holidays!

  44. Wow, well, there’s another cookbook to add to my Amazon.com wishlist! :) That stuff is sooo cute!

My favorite Christmas dessert is gingerbread cookies. I am the baker, but they are so fun to make. I put Christmas music on, and they are one of those things I only make on Christmas, so I look forward to them every year.

  45. My grandmother’s sugar cookies are my favorite at Christmas time!! Also, the snowballs, those are great… really I love it all :)

  46. Every year we invite family to make gingerbread houses from scratch. The smell is so wonderful. And when we accidently break a piece we don’t feel bad cause we get to eat the yummy gingerbread. Its a tradition we will carry on for years to come.. .. Wow now I want to go make some…ta…tta

  47. What fun goodies. Those Christmas recipe cards are perfect for a cookie exchange! Let’s see… my favorite Christmas treat must be homemade caramel corn. I got the best recipe last year and I’m going to make it for the first time this Christmas. Here’s to a new holiday tradition (I hope.)

  54. Favorite desert? Now you’re asking a lot for me to choose! Let’s see, I guess it would have to be pecan pie with a huge dollop of whipped cream.

  55. ANYTHING with mint and chocolate. anything.

  56. i love my pumpkin pie, gotta have it while i can!

  57. I’m Brazilian, and in my opinion the best holiday dessert is the Coconut Flan with caramelized plums my grandma makes. Hmmm!

  62. Every family get together, especially Christmas, I have to make my super easy-super yummy 8 minute cheesecake per request. Actually it’s more like a threat! My niece just loves it and wouldn’t do without it! And neither would I!! :)

    dana_michelle06@yahoo.com

  63. i LOVE desserts so it’s hard to pick just one however since you’re asking for Christmas ones it does help narrow it down. My mom & i have a tradition of making cinnamon rolls from scratch together each Christmas and now that i have 2 daughters (3 &1) my 3yr.old loves to decorate & help in anyway she can so we make cut out sugar cookies and she gets to cut them out and decorate them! sklauer@mchsi.com
Thanks and enjoy the “baking season” :)
    sara

  64. I love my mom’s chocolte flake candy.
    Chocolate Flake Candy (Christmas Favorite)
    1c chopped pecans

  65. My friends wait all year for Nutty Shortbread Bars. I got the recipe from the manual that came with my Kitchen Aid mixer a few years ago. I embellish it with toffee chips which make them divine….

  66. Anything that’s both chocolatey and minty – yum!

  67. pumpkin cheesecake. And fruitcake. No not the doorstop ones with candied ‘fruit’ in it, but one I used to make that was made with dried fruit, 3 kinds of nuts and I forget what else other than a quart of brandy to age it. Dense but not heavy, not too sweet.

  68. I love peanut butter balls or ritz crackers with peanut butter and dipped in chocolate. Basically, anything peanut butter dipped in chocolate :)

  69. Anything with mint in it, mint chocolate bark, mint cookies, chocolate covered mint cookies.

  70. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried my momma’s homemade pecan prailines. They are so rich and tender and full of pecans. The recipe is somewhat tricky and my momma has is down to a science, without any fancy gadgets like candy thermometers and such. Just a big pot, pecans, and waxed paper, and sugar, and buttermilk, and vanilla.

  71. Adorable necklace!

  73. I really really love Food for the gods. I like it extra sweet. Yum.

  74. I love the ridicul;ous amount of sweets that people share at Christmas. But my all time favorite is the divinity that my mom makes every year…that is every year that the humidity in our hometown allows her too. She buys all the ingredientsd by Thanksgiving and then she watches the barometric pressure until the day when her candies will set up perfectly. I don’t even eat but a bite throughout the season, because to me it is really more about the tradition. And I am certain it is something I wll start making some day too!

  75. I just love traditional pecan pie. hehe

  76. My favorite Christmas time treats would be rice krispe treats! Simple. My dad likes to crush up candy canes and add them to the mix.

  82. Gingerbread cake with orange scented whipped cream!

  83. Snickerdoodles and Gingerbread cookies…my friend, myself and our little girls bunker down for 2-3 days of baking, making a mess, having a sleepover and making memories! It is my favorite thing to do at Christmas!

  84. Love frosted sugar cookies

  85. pecan tassies! lots of work..but worth every bite!

  86. These are adorable! I love the retro style of all of the tags and cards. Love, love, love.

As for favorite Christmas sweets/desserts…I’m a huge fan of almond. My family is very Italian, so we make a lot of Italian almond cookies. Hell, sometimes I forgo the cookies and just eat almond paste from the can. :)

  87. Sugar cookies… apple pie… pumpkin pie… just too many “favorites” to choose just one!

  88. My mom-in-law’s butter cookies! It wouldn’t be Christmas without them. AND she makes them 100% by hand, no help from a mixer of any kind.

  89. Plain old Chocolate Bunt Cake with some cool whip. We always have it at the holidays, with a little powered sugar on top like snow. Even if there is “better” stuff on the dessert table I still go for at least a small piece…ok it’s a big piece!

  90. Bakerella, you’re awesome! I check your site daily for baking inspiration. Other than your recipe for nutter butter “balls” as my family would call them, our very favorite recipe around the holidays is PUMPKIN SQUARES. They’re nothing fancy – made with canned pumpkin, yellow cake mix & a few other ingredients – but they are FANTASTIC! Keep up the good work – love your site!

  91. Without a doubt, chocolate-dipped shortbread. Sometimes with some slivered almonds sprinkled on top.

I love making chocolate covered pretzels, peanut butter balls, fudge, and cut out sugar cookies painstakingly detailed with frosting.. This year I think I will try your stuck Santa cupcakes and some chocolate covered cordial cherries. This cookbook looks great. Who can argue with a mix of crafts and food?!

  96. My family makes rosettes each Christmas. They are not necessarily my favorite holiday treat but they bring back tons of memories of times with my family!

  97. I love Peanut butter blossoms! And I don’t know why, but I never make them except in December. They’re not even Christmasy, but I just never think to make them except when I’m doing my Christmas baking!

  98. Anything peppermint!!! Peppermint ice cream, bark, cookies, I love it all!

  99. My favorite is actually a side dish. It’s a jello ‘salad’. Strawberry jello, with a package of frozen strawberries thrown in. Then you roll small balls of cream cheese in pecan meal and toss those in the jello. Chill, eat….YUM

He is now able to find the cotton candy flavor oil where I still enjoy the originals– Cherry!

  104. I have so many favorites, it’s hard to choose! I really like finding new cookie recipes and baking them (along with other goodies). I have 2 great cutout cookie recipes that have been a favorite for years. Butter Cookies and White Velvet Cutouts. These are the 2 best cut out cookies hands down. I bake these and decorate with homemade icing or leave plain. They are great either way. Best cakes are Red Velvet and a “Rave Review Coconut Cake”.

  118. pecan pie!

  119. I love Forgotten Cookies! We have made those since I was a kid and they always bring back great memories!

  120. I love “ribbon cookies” – they are striped cookies with three colors of dough – white, pink, and brown (chocolate/pecan) making the stripes or ribbons. They are so good, and I could eat an entire batch, which is why I only make them at Christmas.

  121. Wow….just one favorite dessert?! I will say my grandmother’s delicious chocolate cake with whipped cream frosting. It’s so divine and chocolately. Love it! And love you Bakerella!!

  130. Milk and cookies santa style.

  131. Every cookie my mom makes for Christmas is my favorite. Thumbprints and lazy logs (dense chocolate cookies shaped like logs) are the ones my siblings and I search for the most. Did I mention my mom has to hide the cookies so we don’t eat them before Christmas? Did I mention we are all adults? Yes, we still search her house and she has new hiding spots each year. I tried to make the thumbprints but they just don’t taste like my moms. Maybe some day.

  184. Oh that is an easy one! I love, love Memi Jeane’s fudge! She makes it the best!

  185. Wow, that is a hard one. I would have to say Pecan Pie, followed by Peanut Butter Roll, closely followed by Peanut Butter Balls (some people call them Buckeyes), closely followed by ….well actually, I don’t think there is a sweet I don’t like at Christmastime!! My favorite Christmas sweet is one we only make for the holidays: Scotcharoos. They are rice krispies mixed with peanut butter and then topped with melted butterscotch and chocolate. Yoooowza.
