Cute as a button

Candy Buttons

No, I haven’t taken up sewing. (Not yet anyway.) These adorable little buttons are all candy.

And, umm… they are like handmade.

Not by me, but remember my crazy talented, cupcake fanatic friend, Julie?

She made them for a friend’s baby shower using a fab tutorial from Bake it Pretty.

Candy Button Display

They are just about the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

Candy Buttons

The tutorial even includes a pdf for the labels so you can print them out at home and make your own packaging.

Julie made yellow, pink, green, orange and blue buttons with colored candy melts.

Just melt the candy and pour into a button mold. Let them dry and pop them right out.

Place them in small plastic bags and attach the labels. Just fold them in half and staple them together.

Candy Button Display

Or, if you’re crazy like Julie, then you make the labels work with your own wooden custom candy button display that your awesomely talented husband built for you.

Yeah, I’m sucking up in case he reads this and wants to make one for me, too.

So, instead of folding the labels in half, you can fold them in thirds. Two-thirds in front and one-third in the back so you have enough room to use a hole punch on the labels without messing up the graphics. And then just use a little double-sided tape to attach the labels to the bags.

Candy Buttons

Easy and like I said… cute as a button.

Onesie Cookies

Julie also made these onesie sugar cookies for the shower. I’m gonna work on her to get this recipe because they were really good.

Okay, back to buttons…
Here is the Candy Button Tutorial from Bakeitpretty.com.

Check out the site when you have some time. Cute stuff for baking AND for decorating!

Guess what else…?
The guys that run the site gave me a gift voucher code to shop at their store last year. I forgot I had it until Julie showed me these buttons and I remembered the email they sent me. I decided that since I had not used it yet, I wanted to give it away to one of you guys. Hopefully it still works. And if not, I’ll buy a new one for you. K?

  1. Baking…I drive myself nuts trying to make things look perfect and an never happy :(

  2. I love making them look pretty, even though taste is important too! =)

  3. LOVE making them look pretty! The little added touches really make a huge difference. Thanks for all you do Bakerella!!

  4. I enjoy the baking the most. I don’t have huge decorating talent. And if it doesn’t taste good, then who cares? For example, this year I used a Martha icing recipe for my sugar cookie cutouts. It was easy to work with and pretty, but it had the texture of Mylanta.

  5. First I love your site and read it all the time. You are a big inspiration for me. Also, I have seen that button candy molds and things on the Bake it pretty website and absolutely love them also. I am about the taste of what I make but like to make things look pretty with simply tricks and techniques.

  6. Definitely making them look pretty! It’s all about the decorating for me.

  7. ok, I have to admit…I like to make them pretty- although I want them to taste pretty too :) But , I love stepping back and seeing how cute they look the most!

  8. I love making them look pretty, but it’s gotta taste good too!!

  9. I like making them look pretty!!

  10. I prefer to make my creations pretty… but if they don’t turn out like I envision them I end up eating them!

  11. As much as I love making sweets pretty, I love the baking part best. Filling the house with all those delicious smells…..nothing better!

  12. I definitely enjoy the baking more- but I am starting to learn how to make things pretty! I have always been able to make meringue mushrooms and chocolate leaves but that was the extent of it. Now I am learning to decorate cakes AND I am learning a lot from your blog!

  13. I love the pretty part, but I think I love baking MORE! When I see a beautiful display case of baked treats, I am more interested in checking out the crumb of the cake or the shape of the cookie or the delicious filling than anything. And when I eat, it’s like a science experment–what is in there and how did they get such a ______ texture! (I like smooth and silky, rich and dense and moist, crumbly and nutty, just about everything!)

  14. I love to do both although these days I do much more of the baking as my son has discovered that he likes to root in the cupcake bin and decorate them as well. We have a lot of fun baking and decorating them together. He was very proud this weekend as he just mastered cracking an egg into the mix with no shells !

  15. I prefer to make the desserts. I am too much of a perfectionist to decorate. I drive myself nuts :)

  16. I love making goodies since I’m a “test the batter” type baker.

Thanks for a great give away!

  17. I’m sure that this is the hardest question ever asked by man. I choose making them look pretty! ..no, baking them! ..both??

  18. I like making things look pretty, but don’t usually have the patience to finish, so I end up with only a handful of pretty and the rest, well, at least they still taste good!!

  19. well of course whatever you make has to look scrumptious but in the end taste is going to win. thanks for a great giveaway to sweet place!!

  20. I love dreaming about making them as pretty as the things I see on your site! I’ve just discovered my baking side so I’m slowly making progress.

  21. I think I like making them pretty more! (after eating them of course….)

  22. That’s so hard! I have a baking problem, so I love love love baking, but making it pretty is half the fun!

  23. I like both baking and then making them pretty. But I need to work on the latter part.

  24. I love to bake also to make a pretty decoration for cookies
or cupcakes is so much fun.. I would love to go shopping.

  25. I really like making sweets look pretty more. It’s the artist in me. I’m a college art teacher.

  26. I love to bake, but my favorite part is making it perty!!

  27. I’m all about the baking- I usually have half the treat eaten by the time I get around to making it look pretty!

  28. I like to bake the most! mostly because I am still working on my “pretty” technique! :) I want to make sure everything I bake tastes phenominal to other people – regardless of how it looks!

  29. i love both. although, i haven’t mastered making them look pretty yet.

  30. Easy! My favorite part is making them look pretty! Hands down the most exciting part of baking!

  31. Those are too stinkin’ cute!!!

  32. Hmmm… that would definitely be the baking, as I not so talented in the pretty-making category (yet). People probably look at some of stuff and say “bless her heart.” But at least it usually tastes good!

  33. I love baking them- such a stress reliever!

  34. I love the creative process as much as the baking! But it is so great to see the recipient’s face when they are truly happy with what you’ve done.

  35. I absolutely love making them look pretty the best. It can be so much fun. I love going that extra step to make something truely unique and special. Everyone always seems to appreciate it that much more.

  36. Did you know my birthday’s in two days? This would be the perfect gift! ; )

I definitely like making sweets look pretty a trillion times more than baking them! I’m not the handiest one in the kitchen. hehe

  37. Make it Pretty :)

  38. Let’s see……baking sweets? making them look pretty? baking sweets? making them look pretty? ……..Making them look pretty!!!!!!

  39. That’s a tough one! I think I like baking better, but decorating is also fun! However, the very best to my mind is the eating all the sweets with your friends/family…
Loving your site. It is filled with so much cuteness, it’s magical!

  40. I like making them as well as making them look pretty!

  41. I definitely enjoy making them look pretty! And these look gorgeous!

  42. I love baking sweets because I like the creating part. Ok, and the result part. The pretty part…I wish I had more talent and patience for that!

  43. My skills definitley lie in the baking department. I don’t always have the patience to make them look super cute. If I had your talent I might take the time though!

  44. I probably enjoy making them pretty most, but I love both!

  45. I like the dressing up part the best. I love when goodies look as good as they taste. :) Thanks for the chance to win!

  46. Oh, I’m all about the making them cute part…not so much the baking part…and those onesie cookies are off the chart cute! Loved the display of the buttons too…so very clever all these great ideas and of course, your presentation here on you blog is the best ‘eye candy’ of all!

  47. I prefer the baking!

  48. I love baking. Usually by the time they are baked I don’t have a lot of time with two little ones running around. But I always have the best intention to decorate them pretty. :)

  49. Definitely making sweets because I am not very good at making them look pretty! Gotta work on that. :)

  50. around the holidays, making them look pretty. For the rest of the year it doesn’t matter…dessert is dessert. :)

  51. I enjoy making them look pretty – it makes you real proud of all the hard work once it’s all done and you’re getting compliments.

  52. Hello Bakerella!
Thank you for this fabulous post! These buttons are SUPER cute!! I am hosting a baby shower this spring and definitely plan on making these adorable buttons and bags as party favors! The Bake It Pretty blog is great too!

    Thank you for sharing!

    Cheers!
    Christi

  53. Lil bit of both. Mostly the baking part.

  54. definately making them look pretty.

  55. Baking! I don’t have the patience or talent to decorate. As long as it tastes good, I’m fine with it! :)

  56. I love baking sweets the best. They don’t always look pretty but I still try.

  57. These buttons are the cutest!
I love baking sweets and making them look delicious and then taking pictures of them for everyone to drool over. :)

  58. I love making sweets look pretty. People eat with thier eyes, so a pretty treat will always be remembered!

  59. I like to make them pretty……….I love the comments people give me, it makes me feel good about myself and my talent ;-)

  60. I love baking, making it pretty stresses me out, but I try my best!

  61. That’s a tough one! I think making them look pretty is more stressful, but ultimately more rewarding if everything goes well. Baking is relaxing and it almost always goes according to plan.

  62. Wow – I wish I was that talented – I apreciate your willingness to share! Thanks!!

  63. Baking, then ‘trying’ to make them look pretty.
These buttons are way too cute.

  64. Baking is only required to have the blank canvas. The fun is alll in the decorating! Great buttons… Now to get a mold….

  65. I enjoy both baking and decorating…however, I tend to be a little impatient when it comes to tedious decorating. With the baking…if it tastes good, everyone is happy!

  66. Oh man! I need some sweets today! I love eating them!

  67. I love baking more (and eating)! I really wish I was more talented at making things look pretty, but I’m not and I get frustrated with myself. This website has such cute stuff!

  68. i love baking and eating them!

i have fallen in love with your site!!!!!
i am currently in chile and can’t get A LOT of the ingredients you use, and i can’t wait to get home (good ole GA in may) so i can try my hand at all the amazingly adorable things you make! my mom is worried that i want to come home more for that purpose than to see her. =)

  69. It’s all about making them look pretty, of course I wouldn’t turn down eating baked goodies either :)

  70. Baking sweets–I wish making them pretty was easier for me :)

  71. I love the actual baking part…I am still trying to perfect the making them pretty! I love experimenting with making them pretty, though!

  72. Eating them! Oh, wait……that wasn’t one of the choices. Hmmmm…..I think—making them pretty.

  73. I enjoy EATING sweets the most! ;-)

    Love you blog!

  74. I’m a decorator and party planner at heart, so making things look pretty is what I love!

  75. If you’re gonna bake sweets, you HAVE to make them look pretty. =D

  76. I love to bake the sweets because I can taste them along the way. But making them look pretty is fun too.

  77. I enjoy making sweets, but I like making them pretty even more!

  78. Making them look pretty! For some reason, I just love the look on a person’s face when I give them something I have made and they say “You made this??!!”

  79. Definitely baking them. I have lots of creative ideas for making things look pretty but the execution… well, that leaves a lot to be desired….

  80. Making the sweets. I am not to talented in the decorating dept.

  81. I love to bake, but it has to look good so I guess BOTH!

  82. I like to BAKE more than I like the decorating-I don’t have the patience, though I LOVE to look at and eat decorated sweets

  83. he 1st time I bake something, it’s all about the taste. After that, I work on making it all look pretty!!!

  84. BOTH! The artist in me definitely has to make them gorgeous to look at…yet I love to bake them so that I can share them with everyone!

  85. I enjoy baking more than decorating… but I’m working on that!

  86. I like baking but definately love making them look pretty more.

  87. I definitely LOVE baking sweets…the pretty part isn’t as much of a forte…

  88. I would say baking them. It’s an extra plus if they look pretty!

  89. Definitely baking sweets. Usually it takes so long that I don’t have the patience to try to make them look pretty too!

  90. i love, love, LOVE to bake sweets. and i love to make them look beautiful. but my kiddos love to make them look beautiful, too….. anyhoo, i would love to use that little voucher to buy some of those button molds. awesome sweet little party favors for frilly little girls like mine. fingers crossed!

  91. I must admit I love to bake but I’m not so good at decorating. Will need to work on that when I have some free time.

  92. I like baking more than making sweets look pretty, but part of that is the time factor, and part of it is that my creations never seem to look as pretty as I imagine them. Thanks for the giveaway!

  93. I love to make them pretty!!! But eating and baking them are a very close second! Yum!

  94. Making them cute. :)

  95. That would be a toss up! I always love to bake but if I have the time to make them cute it’s always more fun! It’s even better when they turned out like I planned!

  96. I like baking them because even if they don’t look pretty, they still taste good. I’m still working on making them look pretty.

  97. I think I enjoy baking things the most, its my stress relief, my time to have fun with my 2 year old nephew, who for his age is a pretty good helper. And, I know my boyfriend appreciates the baking of sweets more than decorating, decorating means he has to wait longer for them. :)

  98. I really love baking! Making the sweets look pretty is just an added bonus! However, no matter what I bake, I love sharing it with my friends and family.

  99. I’d prefer pretty personally! :)

Aren’t those the cutest buttons ever? WOW!

  100. After learning how to flood cookies for the first time last week, I’m officially hooked on making them pretty :)

  101. I love baking and am working on the patience to make them prettier. It really depends on what I am making.

  102. Making them look pretty!!!!

  103. That’s a hard one, who could not want both? but, I’m not good at making them pretty, so I just love baking them!

  104. I like making them but I really want to get better at making them look pretty, that is why I come here!!!

  105. Definitely baking them!! Making them look pretty is just an added bonus. Plus, just because something looks pretty doesn’t mean it tastes good, so you gotta put in the work of making them taste good, then making them look good!

  106. I LOVE to bake, but I’m definitely all for making them pretty! :)

  107. as much as I love to bake, making them look pretty is the most fun!

  108. Making it look pretty…definitely!

  109. Making them pretty is always a good thing, but looks aren’t everything. They have to taste great too!

  110. I like baking them the best. It’s too much fun to see the cuteness come together. And then you get the reward of eating!

  111. I am re-discovering my love for baking and am slowly easing my way to making them pretty – what fun!

  112. Look pretty! That’s the best part!

  113. Definitely making it pretty! That is always the motivation!

  114. I guess if I had to choose, baking them.

  115. Does eating count? Just kidding… although I do like sampling along the way! Baking is my favorite…although I think part of that is making them look pretty!

  116. I like to make them pretty. BUT what I REALLY like to do, is EAT the sweets!

  117. I enjoy baking them more. I want to make them look cute but the more I try the more they look like my 4 yr old decorated them. I’ve given up and just let her do it. At least she has fun!

  118. Making them pretty!! I can get so carried away. I’m in trouble when all of my children move out. Guess what I’ll be doing…?

  119. If I had to pick between the two (and eating wasn’t an option) I’d pick making them pretty. At that point, the hardest, messiest part is done and I love busting out my box-o-sprinkles and frosting colors and taking time to improve my decorating skills.

  120. i like making them look pretty.

  121. These are just adorable. I bake cakes and these would look so cute on a babyshower cake!!!

  122. Love to make things pretty….I’m all about the packaging and would rather work with cello bags and ribbons than frosting. :)

  123. Baking them! It’s relaxing :)

  124. I like making them look pretty, then EATING THEM ALL UP! =D

    Ashley

  125. Baking them, not so good at the decorating.

  126. I definitely enjoy making them pretty more. I’m a snob like that. If it doesn’t look pretty, I don’t want it anywhere near me–even if it tastes delicious.

  127. Those are buttonific!!!!

  128. Definitely baking them! I love for them to look pretty, but that it not my forte…

  129. I think I like eating them best; but between baking them and making them pretty I definitely like making them pretty! They might not always be perfect, I definitely need a little practice, but pretty baked goods are always so much fun!

  130. Boy is this perfect timing. Since I am doing TWO baby showers.

    Tickled Pink!

  131. I like sitting around the table with my kids making my treats look good. We have a good time, and we NEVER sneak a treat while we are decorating. :)

  132. I would love to win! And the best part about treats is making them look pretty (and delicious!)

  133. What a great post – and thank you for the link too. I’d love a chance to win that gift certificate also! Thanks a bunch!

  134. Baking sweets is what i prefer, but sometimes i spend the time to make hem pretty.

  135. Definitely baking. I’m not very good yet at making them look pretty, but I’m working on it!

  136. oh i would love to have them look pretty, still have to work on that !
but i sure love making sweets and absolutely adore yours !!!!

  137. I think making anything look cute is the best part of all!

  138. DEFINITELY making them look pretty! My boyfriend gets all the ‘duds’. :D

Julie (maybe having the same name as your super talented friend will bring me luck!!)
    bell.julie@gmail.com

  139. Making them look cute at a button :)

  140. I’m a big believer in the “it doesn’t have to be pretty to taste good” philosophy. But I love those buttons and would love to use them on cupcakes! I have actually thrown a button-themed shower before and those would have been great!

  141. Definitely making them look pretty, but it’s always better if they taste great too!

  142. My daughter and I love to bake and it has been so much fun since we found this site! We love making them pretty!

  143. I love to do it all…but of course my favorite has to be eating them! YUM!!! :)

  144. i would have to say i enjoy baking sweets more than decorating only because i’m not the most creative person. but both are incredibly fun!

  145. It’s a toss up! I like to do the baking and then to make them pretty! If my sons help with the baking, it’s most definitely the baking part.

  146. I love baking them because the house smells so good and I love hearing my kids squeel with delight!! I do pretty when we are taking them somewhere else.

  147. If you would have asked a few months ago, I would have gone with the baking part (and eating), but ever since I made my son’s birthday cake in December, I am hooked on the decorating. Last night, I skipped the Grammy’s to make the prettiest little hearts and squigglies in hot pink for my daughter’s cake. I was inspired by your WOW MOM candy flowers and they came out so cute! Fortunately, there is no end to how pretty a 6 year old’s birthday cake can get ;)

  148. I think I’ll have to say making them look pretty. There’s nothing more rewarding than having a family member or a friend be super impressed by your decorating skills on a super tasty treat!

  149. Making them look pretty! I just made the Elmo & Oscar cake pops for my daughter’s birthday a week & a half ago. Can’t wait to try more of your fun ideas!

  150. I like baking them the best. Making them look pretty…I’m still not the best at that, but I’m getting better. :D

  151. Truthfully, I like eating baked goods the best. Decorating them is 2nd most fun after eating though!

  152. I MUCH prefer the baking to the decorating…although maybe just because by the time I get to decorating I’m already pooped from all the baking :)

  153. I think making them look pretty, although by that I mean via packaging rather than by using pastry tips or something crazy. I love designing labels like the ones on those adorable buttons. I DIE for those buttons – that girl needs to open a store, stat.

  154. I have always loved buttons. I have a jar of my grandmother’s old buttons that I cherish. What a cute ides. Count me in.

  155. Definitely making them look pretty!

  156. I love to TRY to make them look pretty. :)

  157. My cupcakes and assorted treats always look better than they taste, but I really wish it was the other way around! :-)

  158. I love to bake but not very creative when it comes to decorating!

  159. I love to make them look good. it allows you to get as creative as you want and if you mess up just eat it and start over. YUM

  160. I’m a cake decorating instructor who would be thrilled to have someone do all the baking for me. I’m fine at it, but it’s the decorating that is my passion.

  161. Ohhh – that’s a touch question! I love baking. Making them pretty would probably be my favorite if I were better at prettify-ing them, though. :-)

  162. baking them! so much fun!

  163. i love baking them, but would like to get better at making them look pretty!

  164. Definitely making them look PrEtTy!! ;)

  165. i love eating them the most but a close second would be adding an extra layer of cuteness to everything thats baked

  166. I love making sweets pretty. It is so fun to see the looks on peoples faces when you tell them it’s food.

  167. Baking them. But only because eating them was not a choice:-).

  168. Baking. I often can’t resist eating the cookies, cakes, etc. while they are still warm and gooey. Decorating is great, but it tests my willpower.

  169. making them look pretty, making them look pretty!!

  170. I love making them look cute!

  171. They definitely have to look pretty or people won’t be as excited to eat them. However, they also have to taste amazing or the fact that they are pretty won’t matter!

  172. making them pretty, always my choice!

  173. If I can make my sweets look even sweeter with delicious icing and decorations, that’s all the better for me, so I might have to say it’s the decorating that I love!

  174. Definitely making sweets look pretty! Thanks for the chance to win!

  175. I like….both! I enjoy the whole process, until it’s time to clean up!

  176. Definitely making them pretty. But that’s because there are so many sweets I don’t like. Like cake and cupcakes. But I would still make Bakerella’s cake balls, because anything that cute needs to be made.

  177. Adorable!

For now, I would say I enjoy baking sweets but I’m slowly getting into making them look pretty. I’m finding for me, it takes A LOT of practice.

  178. Forget that, the real reason I go to any of the ffort is to EAT them! Or enjoy watching others eat them!

  179. Do you remember the ‘old’ game, “Buttons, Buttons, Who’s got the buttons?” ? Looks to me like your friend Julie and ‘Bake It Easy’ have the buttons ;-p

(I did not take the time to read all of the other comments, hope your not tired of hearing about that game by the time you read down to my comment.)

One of my friends whom has the name of Julie – Julie E. – laughs and says “she cooks from scratch – I stand in front of the pantry, scratch my head, and ask myself which can or box I’m going to open for dinner tonight. he he he.”

While I usually just stick to the baking, rather than the making it pretty, I do like to combine both – it just depends on time, etc.

    If my number is picked what wil I choose? I don’t know, but looking forward to figuring that out!! ;-}

  180. This is an easy one… I totally love making baked goods and confections look pretty. The baking is fun too but mostly that is just a step I have to take to lick the bowl. It is all about the pastry bag, icing tips and embellishments!

  181. Though I love pretty things, I’m not so good at making them pretty so I guess I prefer baking!

  182. As they say, you feast with your eyes first, so I think making them pretty is the real enjoyment. No one likes hearing that their food appears unappealing (even if it tastes good). So yeah, I’m for the decorating side of it.

  183. I love the baking part!!! It is so relaxing to be in the kitchen experimenting and having fun!

  184. It can look pretty but if it doesn’t taste good what is the point? So, I guess that at the end of the day I spend more time on the taste. Once I master that then I make it pretty!

  185. I would have to say,, making sweet look pretty!! I love doing the detail work.

  186. Making it pretty is more fun as it allows my imagination to run wild and make beautiful masterpieces :D

  187. I like baking best. But then, I’m also of the school that believes that there are few things in the world more beautiful than a lovingly-made, home-baked confection, no matter what superficial flaws would keep it out of a professional bakery. So I tend to think of all home baking as beautiful, whether or not they’re as cute as yours! :)

(That being said, I made your Coke polar bear cupcakes while I was at my parents’ house for the holidays — with red velvet cupcakes, to keep the red/white theme — and they were such a hit! Everyone was amazed at “my” ingenuity. I took no credit, and sent them all to your website, but it was still pretty wonderful to have my creations gawked at like that!)

  188. Both – I love baking AND making them pretty. I just wished I had more time for both.

  189. I think baking is my favorite, because it results directly in EATING, which is my ultimate favorite! :)
When I make things look pretty, I have a harder time eating them, because I just want to take pictures, look at them, and give them away!

  190. I love to bake delicious goodies but making them pretty is my favorite part!!

  191. I’m working on the pretty, but I’m definitely more about the making. There’s nothing worse than getting excited about what looks like a delicious and darling treat only to bite into it and be disappointed by the flavor.

  192. I’d say that baking and decorating have to be equal fo me… but watching people enjoy my effort is the best part!

  193. I love baking. All sorts of things, and trying new recipes is the best…especially when they turn out fantastic.

  194. I concur…that is a HARD choice. But I think I’ll have to go with making them pretty. I try telling myself that I don’t like eating them, but I haven’t won that argument yet. :)

  195. While I do like making my baked goods look good I enjoy the process of baking a lot more – for me it’s good stress relief…to crack open the eggs, to knead the dough, all of it just helps to melt my stress away.

  196. These are great. I’m going to be doing a baby shower in a few months. I will try these out.
