Here Kitty, Kitty!

Here Kitty, Kitty!

It’s my cake pops, Hello-Kitty style. Back in December, I made a little Hello Kitty cake for my niece’s 1st Birthday and as I was shaping the Hello Kitty figure out of fondant, it occurred to me how screaming cute these would be as cake pops. I couldn’t wait to try them. But, how the heck would I make those distinctive, yet subtle little ears. Well, the answer is easier than you think.

Hello Kitty Cake Pops

Here’s what you will need:

Cake and frosting (Read basic Cake Pop How-To)
Mini Red m&ms
White candy melts
Jumbo Heart Sprinkles
Rainbow Chip Sprinkles
Black Edible Ink Pen
Paper Lollipop Sticks
Styrofoam Block
White Chocolate Chips
(Whoops…I left the most important ingredient out of the above picture.)

But, take a look below and you can see how perfectly they work for the ears.

Hello Kitty Cake Pops

  • Shape the Hello Kitty heads into a semi-flat oval shape. Insert tip of lollipop stick into some of the melted candy and insert into the bottom of the Hello Kitty head.
  • Take two white chocolate chips and dip the bottoms in the melted candy and then place/glue them on the top of Hello Kitty head.
  • Stand them up in a styrofoam block to dry. When the ears are firmly attached to the head, dip the entire Hello Kitty head in a bowl of the white melted candy. Make sure the bowl is deep enough so you can get it in one dunk. Then remove and gently tap off any extra coating. This will help smooth it out, too.
  • When the Hello Kitty heads are dry, apply the hearts and m&ms to make a bow and the yellow rainbow chips to make a nose. You can use a toothpick and a little bit of the melted candy to act as the glue.
  • Then, draw the eyes and whiskers on using an black edible ink pen.

Hello Kitty Cake Pops

And, enjoy!

QUESTION: How do you get the marker to write on them? I bought the black marker and it will only write about 1/8th of the time, the rest of the time it’s very faint. These are so cute, I just wish I could get the eyes and whiskers. I’m going to buy black icing to finish the rest of them, the marker just doesn’t work!!!

Hi! I bought all the ingredients to make these for a birthday party, except the white chocolate chips for the ears, which I haven’t been able to find. I was wondering if I could use semisweet chocolate chips instead? Also if I could use a chocolate cake and it wouldn’t show through the white coating? Thanx!!!!!!

Gorgeous! DId you really use the Smith Family’s recipe – as The Teach Cooks did it TWICE, carefully measuring and found both times the cakes were really rubbery. What was you actual recipe? Read her post about it. She finally used the Swan’t Down 1-2-3-4 recipe, but her layers were thicker. This is gorgeous. I would LOVE to make it, but will not until I find the recipe you actually used.
If you could be so kind?
Happy Heart Day!

I love this idea! Thank you so much for the instructions. I had to lolly pop cakes today at Starbucks and was not impressed. I think I can do much better. I couldn’t believe that Starbucks has three different kinds at $1.50 each, but I just had to try them to get a better idea.

I just made/served at my daughters 5th birthday party. YOU are the reason why it was such a hit. I made these for the kids and the “Oreo Cookies n Cream” cupackes for the adults. Both were a HUGE hit. YOU saved me once again.
Yes we have a wood pizza oven and they are great but ppl come to our parties just to see what little treasure I came up with.
Angie you are a total hero for me. Thank you for invoking a passion w/in me and the stuff to totally copy! Once you heal up from all your surgery stuff PLEASE do another book tour-I had to work the day of your last SF stop, I just need a hug to say thank you for everything you have given us.

You are awesome!!!! They look great, my daughter is having a Hello Kitty theme for her 9th birthday on Saturday. Your kitty cake pops are super cute but I wanted to try them with something quicker, rice Krispy treats. I found that the edible pen doesn’t write well on coating that has been refrigerated I struggled to find a solution until I came across black frosting in Publix (not the gel). It works wonderfully making the eyes and whiskers and looks great too!!! Mine aren’t as smooth, well shaped or basically perfect as yours but they aren’t bad at all. Thanks for sharing with us!!
