Christmas Eve is spent with my hubby’s brothers and sisters.
Everyone gathers around the dining room table (which seats 8) for a candle-lit, restaurant style sit-down dinner that includes custom made menus, matching place cards, table decor, cloth napkins, candles and the like. My 3 kids help out as busboys and serve / clear the dinnerware as needed. Been doing it since 2006. And love every minute of it!

My favorite thing about the holidays is having another opportunity to give back and say thank you to so many. You see, our house is always full. We have therapists, respite workers, teachers, and doctors here. Either working with our son, Greyson, or having a meeting with us. Greyson is differently abled. It has taken a lot of different people to get him to where he is today. We still have a lot to work on, but we have a supportive dedicated team. I love to celebrate them during the holidays by reflecting back the warmth and graciousness that they show all year long.

The best part of the holidays is decorating. I love putting away the every day items & pulling out my 15 totes of Christmas decorations. Of course, there’s the tree, but there is also the nativity scene, stockings, Christmas books for the kids, countdowns, mini trees, door hangers, Santa collection, and just a few lights outside…enough to appease the kids. My favorite time is turning off all the regular lights & just having the tree lit up with the soft, white lights…there is nothing more soothing or relaxing!

When I was about 7, my mother taught me to memorize “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Every year since then, even if we were not together and had to call each other, we recite the poem in unison on Christmas Eve. I went through a period of feeling like it was hokey but now 35 years later and with my own daughter, it feels like a link to Christmas past and to Christmas future as I will teach my daughter the same.
