Joy with friends and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

Wendy, Bridget and Amy

I was in Columbus, Ohio last weekend visiting with some sweet friends that I’ve met through blogging… Wendy of Wenderly, Bridget of Bake at 350, and Amy of She Wears Many Hats. Hi guys! I mean girls.

Wendy lives in Ohio and invited us to spend a few days at her cabin in the woods. Has anyone seen that movie? And yes, I totally spent the weekend suggesting scary movie situations to them. What if this – and what if that. But mostly scaring myself. I definitely watch way too many SyFy Sunday movies. If you watch that channel, you know the ones I mean.

Anyway, we kicked off our fun cabining weekend with a straight from the airport pitstop for lunch and then Jeni’s ice cream. Yay!

Jeni's Ice Cream

Jeni’s is based in Ohio and I’ve been wanting to visit one of her scoop shops for some time now.

Jeni's Signature Flavors

She has some incredible flavors. Or should I say splendid.

Yogurt

And yogurt too.

I love all the chalk writing and window words. So cute.

Jeni's Ice Cream

The inside of the store is perfect with the ceiling strung in little lights and paper garland.

Jeni's Ice Cream

You can buy ice cream by the scoop and by the pint. Whoohoo!

So many flavors. Signature and seasonal ones too.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Like this one for flu season. Influenza sorbet.

Soothing for the sickly. Made with cayenne pepper, ginger, bourbon, honey, orange and lemon juices.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Handwritten! Love it and love how the same flavors are written by different people. What a fun way to add that personal touch.

And now I have a strange desire get a job handwriting ice cream labels. I wonder if I could add hearts and smiley faces.

By the way, if you’re in Ohio, stop what you are doing right now and run and get some of that Maple Walnut ice cream. It’s fantastic. I think that container on the top right is actually mocking me right now with all of its maple amazingness. I even tried to order some more today online, but that flavor is seasonal and isn’t shipping. Wipes tear. So get it in stores while you can.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Sweet friends, ice cream and a great start to our winter weekend away.

You know what, you can also make your own Jeni’s ice cream. Check out her book: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home.
Jeni's Ice Cream

The staff at Jeni’s was great. Super patient. They didn’t even mind the 571 samples we asked for. But I think that’s pretty smart of them, because then we ended up ordering 571 scoops to enjoy. You know … just to be absolutely sure they were good. : )

Jeni's Ice Cream

Okay not really 571 scoops, but several. Here’s a few of the flavors we all sampled.

Eaten

Enjoyed and instagrammed. It’s a mandatory food blogging thing … to share when something is so so good.

Jeni's Ice Cream

My favorites right now: Dark Chocolate (of course) and that Maple Walnut. Goodness. Very goodness!

Amy, Wendy & Bridget

While we were laughing and sampling, we had a fun surprise. Jeni stopped in the location we were at. With several stores, we certainly weren’t expecting that. Wendy had met her before so she introduced us.

Me and Jeni

Hi Jeni! Your ice cream makes my tummy happy.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Such a great smile. It’s nice to see when people are doing something they love.

Visit Jeni’s Ice Cream for online ordering, scoop shop locations and where to buy by the pint in other states.

  1. Ice cream, 100%. My favorite frozen treat is a sammie from the Coolhaus truck here in LA.

  2. Ice cream all the way!!! :) us pregnant girls love ice cream!!!

  3. Ice cream and sorbet. My favorite was using my friend’s homemade dessert, (mango puree, diced mango, pomelo, coconut milk and tapioca) made into frozen pops– delicacy.

  4. There’s nothing like fresh, tasty good ice cream especially by a person who believes in the craft of flavors and making it. If I can’t get there to the store itself, I would love to win these tasty treats and be able to spread the word. Thank you

  5. I am all about ice cream…. But I’ve been known to get my fro yo on from time to time ;)

  6. Ice cream and frozen yogurt all the way! When i’m home I tend to eat mostly ice cream and i’m always in the mood…which can tend to be a bad thing at times haha but when i’m away at school I love frozen yogurt, that’s probably because they seem to have one on every corner! :D My favourite ice cream flavour would probably have to be mint chocolate chip and my favourite frozen yogurt flavour is coconut. Being a college student I know my friends and I would LOVE to have 17 pints to share :) I loved this blog!

  7. Ice cream for sure! Not that I would ever say no to some frozen yogurt or sorbet. =)

  11. 100% ice cream!! There’s a place near me in Massachusetts called Rota Spring Farm that makes the best handmade ice cream I’ve ever had. The cows are right there in the field next to the store for everyone to see… It always makes me wonder which ones contributed to my dessert!

  20. My favorite treat is a simple hot fudge sundae. Great giveaway!

  21. I will have to go with ice cream. I remember as a kid my grandmother and I would go to the fridge, pull out the 5 gallon mint n chip ice cream, dish it into those old fashion ice cream glasses, pour on some Hershey’s syrup and go and watch Murder She Wrote. I still get the 5 gallon mint n chip and now make my own chocolate sauce. I would really love to try Jeni’s ice cream. All those flavors, where to start?

  22. I love them all, but I really couldn’t do without ice cream. Molly Moon’s salted caramel is my favorite recent discovery.

  23. I am an ice cream lover. Chocolate and pb, any version of salted caramel, and really creamy vanilla are at the top of my list. I do like a good fruit sorbet too…

  24. Ice cream …my Achilles heel!

I am a mint chip girl

  25. So many flavors, so little time! Just a gander at the list – I think my first tries would be the lemon yogurt then the salted caramel. Looks like they are prepared for samples with those baby spoons, LOL.

  26. I’m ALL about the ice cream. No doubt about it.

  27. I’m all about the creamy goodness of ice cream… oh and gelato! All of Jeni’s flavors sound amazing!

  29. Ice cream for sure! But I do love frozen yogurt too. My favorite definitely has to be Oreo ice cream with fresh strawberries.

  30. I love all frozen treats! Homemade with cream from a local creamery makes it a little extra special too. Nothing beats a fresh fruit popsicle or creative ice cream sandwich on a hot summer day!

  31. All of the above. I can’t choose. In fact-I’m going to go get some ice cream from the freezer now.

  32. Oh my heavens… My favorite would have to be ice cream and chocolate peanut butter ice cream to be exact. Yum :)

  33. I love ice cream. Anything chocolatey works for me!

  34. I really love ice cream.. gotten into Neapolitan lately, but I also really love frozen custard from Andy’s! Guh! So good! :D These sound really interesting though! :)

  36. ice cream! my current favorite: ben & jerry’s phish food. that stuff is just too good.

  37. I love ice cream! I enjoy anything chocolate but fell in love with a salted caramel from my local grocery store over last summer. I even fought over an ice cream cone back in the day when dating my husband. Long story short the last bite of cone and ice cream fell on the ground. I am more willing to share now. ;)

  38. I am ALL about ice cream!!! :D

  39. I love ice cream!! My favorite has to be chocolate pecan ice cream from Handles Ice Cream. Followed by banana splits! I would love to win!!

  42. Any flavor as long as it’s coconut!

  43. Ice cream! I do love the others, but I rarely go out for ice cream, so when I do I want the real deal. In that case, chocolate and nuts is a must.

  44. Ice Cream! And I LOVE Jeni’s. Oh to think of a full freezer!

  45. Butter Pecan Ice Cream!!

  46. I’m 34 weeks pregnant and do not discriminate …if its frozen dessert I’ll happily take it! However, egg nog ice cream with cinnamon rocked my socks this holiday season. I am dying to try that Cherry Lambic Sorbet. Ooh, and Brambleberry Crisp. And Whiskey and Pecans. Thank goodness I passed my glucose test today ;) This would be so exciting to win! Especially when the most excitement I have right now is getting my socks on without help! LOL

  47. Butter Pecan Ice Cream!!!!

  48. O.M.G! 17 pints!? Awesome. I love me some frozen yogurt, the whiskey pecan looks killer good!

  49. I usually go for sorbet because I can’t eat dairy. But put something dairy-free with the texture of ice cream in front of me and I’ll devour it!

  50. I’m serious for sorbet. I love mango and pineapple flavored sorbet, any of these flavors in a sundae with rocky road ice cream. Mmm, I’m craving some now.

My favorite flavor is Nutella, really anything with hazelnuts.

  54. I love, love, love ice cream. I worked at Baskin Robbins when I was in high school…primarily for the discount!!! I have so many favorite flavors that I’d hate to have to single one out because I would take too long to figure it out! I love ice cream and have eaten so much of it during my lifetime that I’m nearly convinced I have ice cream running thru my veins instead of blood. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a bowl of ice cream that wants to join me while I peruse your website ; )

  55. I’m a serious SORBET lover!! =) This is an amazingly “cool” giveaway!!

  56. I’m a frozen yogurt fan and don’t usually go for sorbet, but I am seriously intrigued by the Influenza Sorbet.

  57. Ice cream of course!

  58. I’m all about all of the above. Any frozen treat will do. Yum

  59. I am all about ice cream… we have a place similar to Jeni’s in Gainesville, FL. It’s called Sweet Dreams and they have a Mayan Chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne… I was eating it at least 3 times a week for a month. They also have a bizarre flavor night with such ice creams as sweet corn, basil lemon, and red beet!

  60. I definitely would choose frozen yogurt, but ice cream always hits the spot!

  61. I’m all about ice cream!

  62. I live pretty close to Jeni’s in Nashville! It’s so hard to choose a favorite flavor, but like you I have a thing for dark chocolate. I’ve always loved banana splits! Oh and mint chip ice cream! Drool.

  67. You scream, I scream, we all scream for Jeni’s Ice Creams!!!

Aside from being a sucker for freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, one of my all time favorite frozen treats is a classic chipwich!

And #1 of the many (but oh so not even close to all) Jeni’s flavors that my tummy has chosen is: Sweet Potato w/ Toasted Marshmallows. This sweetie pie makes a delightfully delicious winter time treat!

  68. Ice cream, for sure. A couple of scoops of mint chocolate chip and all is right with the world…at least for a little while!

  69. I love traditional ice cream and I could eat it every day of the year!

  70. I dont just love ice cream, my entire family loves ice cream!! Since the hubs and I have become empty nesters, its been “our thing” to grab some late night ice cream at our local ice cream shop!! We have never tried Jeni’s but would love too!! Anything chocolate with nuts!!

  71. I love ice cream and would love to win this giveaway

  72. Ice cream…love it with cookie chunks

  73. If i had to choose a FAVORITE frozen treat i would have to pick gelato because it’s smooth and creamy and it doesn’t give you that feeling that you just ate a pint full of dairy…(even though you did!!)…but if gelato is in short supply, Jeni’s is my favorite stand in because of the unique flavors and un-pintful-of-dairy-feeling!!!!! :-)

  74. Absolutely love sorbet !! Raspberry Mint is my fave :)

  75. I am ALL about ice cream! And that Dark Chocolate Peppermint looks like it’d be right up my alley!

  76. Being from Puerto Rico, with the heat and humidity ice cream wasn’t only a treat, it was a way to stay cool year round! Call it a tool of survival if you must. For the memories of childhood and all the amazing flavor combinations that are possible, I am all about Ice Cream. My favorite base is chocolate or coffee.

My entire family has a massive sweet tooth and we are all somewhat skilled bakers but ice cream is the one dessert/sweet/indulgence I love most in life, followed by a close second tiramisu. Let’s just say that my freezer would be most happy to house these amazing flavors and surprises!

  77. I love ice cream so much that every year for Lent I give up sweets, EXCEPT for ice cream. Sorry Lord but I just can’t help myself!

  81. I love ice cream any kind of ice cream love to make it in the summer with my boys!!

  82. Ice cream all the way! What I wouldn’t do for some of Jeni’s Salty Caramel or Buckeye State right now…..

  83. I like all three. Lately I have been picking frozen yogurt though.

  84. As an equal opportunity eater, I like ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt! My favorite frozen treat has a chocolate wafer cookie crust (made with butter) filled with chocolate mousse ice cream and topped with raspberries.

  85. Ice cream! Especially a regional brand called Hudsonville. Their season Strawberry Shortcake flavor rocks!

  86. I love them all!!! my favorite frozen treat, haagen dazs strawberry ice cream, cant have enough of it!!

  87. Love ice cream but I love sorbet just as much

  88. I scream for ice cream! And, whut? There is a flavor called Goat Cheese and Cherries? Holy Toledo! (actually, Toledo is a couple hours away from Columbus, but Holy Columbus doesn’t sound right.)

  89. I love gelato. Especially my mom’s!

  90. LOVE ice cream! And sorbet…and frozen yogurt….and gelato! I’m good with anything frozen!

  91. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!!!

    Mocha chip all the way!!!!!

  92. Ice cream! I just don’t want to know it has raw egg in it!

  93. An ice cream giveaway! SWEET!! I am a huge ice cream fan. My biggest shock in moving to Western NY is that the ice cream shops close up for winter (not that I blame them, brrrrrrrr) but I miss it! My favorite flavor is a local one from back home – Braum’s Cappuccino Chunky Chocolate Frozen Yogurt…. DIvine… :)

  94. Ice cream! And I’ve made quite a few flavors in her book but haven’t ever had a chance to sample the real thing to see if I’m even close – I need to compare!!! ; )

  95. Ice cream, rock road!!

  96. All about Ice Cream!!! My fave Frozen treat would have to be anything with cheesecake!! Great giveaway!!! :)

  99. Ice cream is a major weakness! I love all kinds but peanut butter concoctions have to be my favorite.

  100. I love jeni’s!! And she is such a sweetheart. I never cared for ice cream until I had jeni’s ice cream. Goat cheese with roasted cherries is phenom.

  101. Ice cream. I love chocolate chip mint or strawberry with big chunks of fresh strawberries in it.

  108. Oh my, how we love Jeni’s! The recipes in her book are super easy to follow and really genuinely taste just like the ice cream in the shop.

Anyways, my favorite frozen treat is Jeni’s Queen City Cayenne and Bangkok Peanut (I have to get them both at once so I can pretend I am eating this wicked awesome frozen spicy peanut butter cup). If I am going for froyo – Jeni’s Lemon with Blueberries is my first choice! Yum!

  109. I LOVE ice cream!!!!

  110. Im all about ice cream! I love cookie dough the best and I love trying out local places. I’d love to win all 17 pints and trust me they wouldn’t last long in this ice cream lovers house lol

  111. Ice Cream!!!

  112. Ice cream all the way! My favorite treat is homemade peach ice cream. Yummy! :)

  113. All about the ice cream, unless there is frozen custard around. I live in Ohio and haven’t had Jeni’s yet! What’s wrong with me? Love her hair btw!

If I win I will have to buy a bigger freezer.

    And I’m okay with that!

  114. Gotta love ice cream! I’m a sucker for banana splits.

  115. I love plain vanilla bean ice cream (I’m an H-D junkie, myself) with peanut butter chips on top. Amen. :)

  116. Wow, I need to plan a road trip to Ohio! Everything looks delicious. I’m a sorbet girl all the way! I have a major lactose allergy, so I’m happy there are so many flavors! I hardly miss ice cream! Thank you for such a generous giveaway :)

  117. Definitely ice cream – the richer, the chocolatey-er, the better!

  118. ice cream… the one dairy indulgence that my lactose intolerant self just can’t give up. :)

  119. Hmmm….I love ice cream, but I have a soft spot for froyo, especially when I can fill my cup with as many flavors as I want and top it with all of my favorites (like Cap’n Crunch!) at a froyo bar. 135. definitely an ice cream girl. my favorite frozen treat!

  136. Ice cream! The Jeni’s cookbook is awesome. I don’t think that there is a flavor I’ve had from it that I didn’t like.

  137. Oh my god! I’m ALL about ice cream – the creamier the better!

  138. i am all about the ice cream! when i studied abroad in italy though, we definitely alternated between the “creamy chocolatey” gelato days and the “fruity icy” gelato days.

  139. I love it all but I would probably go with a sorbet on a really hot day and ice cream on a slightly cooler day. I love the freshness from sorbet.

  140. Ice cream for sure, usually blackberry or another fruit.

  141. Don’t care! Love them all! Thank you so much for doing this giveaway!

  142. #55 is me, brittney. the irreconcilable differences one

  143. Ice cream, usually – though I make an exception for the very unique and out of this world Scream Sorbet in Oakland. By the power of science they make dairy-less sorbet that tastes like more awesome ice cream than, well, most ACTUAL ice cream.

  144. Wow, those all look amazing! Raspberry sorbet is my best beloved of the frozen treats :)

  145. Ice cream. When I was in college, I dated a boy who LOVED frozen yogurt, but he knew how much I loved ice cream. And whenever we went to get ice cream together, I knew he was showing me that he loved me. Not all “irreconcilable differences” are bad things, I guess.

  146. I love ice cream or frozen yogurt, but I’ll take sorbet too! And I certainly can make room for 17 quarts of ice cream in the freezer. I may have to give away some food to the neighbors, but I see it as a win-win.

  147. Ice cream, all the way!! I love the cold creaminess!

  148. I am equal opportunity frozen treat lover. I love them one and all!!

  149. I scream for ice cream! Chocolate- the darker, the better.

  150. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! :)

  151. My friend has been raving about this ice cream since she move to Iowa! I would love to try it and share some with her:) I go for ice cream anyway!!

  152. I love ice cream. Especially chocolate!

  153. I love caramel ice cream! Hope I win!

  154. Ice cream is my very favorite, so obviously I would to win.

  155. I love ice cream. Or just eating frozen whipped cream. I’d love to try Jeni’s!

  156. Ice cream all the way! I live about an hour from Columbus, so I can get Jeni’s more easily than most – their sweet corn and black raspberry is one of my absolute favorites!

  157. I bought Jeni’s book last year & I LOVE it!
I love the story of her & how she started – then started again. It’s full of wonderful & different recipes. Very easy to follow too.
At my house it’s all about ice cream- I like to make her base recipe & add vanilla bean & caramel with pecans.
Thanks for the chance to win the REAL THING!

  158. Anything of the above in chocolate :)

  159. I love Jeni’s Salted Caramel. And the Sweet Potato and Toasted Marshmallow! LOVE!

  160. I refuse to choose! I love it all! ALL THE FROZEN!

  161. I HAVE to have ice cream every day! Ice cream with lots and lots of chunks of chocolate, peanut butter, nuts or any other cookie bits are all welcome in my frozen treat. I’m crazy for frozen yogurt too.

  162. Ice Cream in German Chocolate Cake Flavor! Chocolate ice cream with brownie bits, caramel, coconut, and pecans! Amazing!

  163. I could eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch, dinner. I don’t know what I’d do with out salty caramel ice cream!

  164. When I was in Ohio visiting my sister I got to taste some of her wonderful ice cream and the salted caramel was one of my faves.

  165. My absolute favorite is frozen Greek yogurt! Never thought I’d say such a thing, but it’s so much creamier and better than ice cream!

  166. Ice cream all the way. Especially when it’s sandwiched in between two homemade chocolate chip cookies. Must. Grab. Napkin. I’m drooling.

  167. All about ice cream! And I just bought Jeni’s book! Having a hard time deciding where to start…

  168. I love all ice cream but i’m weird and my favorite is any kind of sherbet!

  169. Of course there’s no doubt that real ice cream always takes the first spot! But I’ve found to liken all kinds of ice cream…real, sorbet, yogurt, gelato, icee.

  170. While I like ice cream (I went to Penn State- you can’t go there and NOT like what The Creamery cranks out!), I LOVE frozen yogurt. I worked in a frozen yogurt shop back in high school MANY moons ago (TCBY was the big then back in that day) and 4 years of it really gave me a taste for the flavor but not the heavy flavor/residue on your tongue. Thanks for the chance- these look fantastic!!

  171. I’m all about ice cream! i love mochi ice cream too :) my favorite frozen treat is coffee ice cream. yum… or trader joes lemon bars… or sprinkles pumpkin… or… ;)

    2. Holy hell this is a dream. You all were just a couple hours away. Love Jeni’s. Love Bridget!!! {This was NOT the time for a Texas girl to come to Ohio though!} Hope you had a great time in our Buckeye State.

  199. Ice cream all the way! My hands down favorite frozen treat is an ice cream/cookie sandwich, only with triple chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven!

And I’d MAKE the 17 pints of ice cream fit in my freezer. Maybe one directly into my tummy, so I’d only need room for 16. =]
