Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.
Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.
But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.
But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.
No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.
The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.
So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Saying a prayer that the process of finding another kidney goes quickly and that you heal quickly as well!
I know feelings are feelings, but I don’t think you let your donor down. You have had 18 wonderful years thanks to that person’s generous gift. I have the organ donor tag on my driver’s license and if it had been my kidney I would have been so happy that you got to use it.

As a very long time reader, I have been wondering where you were but just assumed you were busy with book and such. So sorry to hear you have been so sick. Just know that as a blog community you have much support. I will be praying for you and your family to be lifted up, encouraged and healed.
Wishing you all the best. Stay positive and when you can busy. This will keep you going, I did that when my daughter got e-coil (she just turned 3) and there was a chance she would not come home but I would not listen. We tried to keep in normal (split our work hours and no crying was allowed if you can in her room) so she would not get scared. Come this November it will 10 years and they thought she would have health problems nothing. She is taller then me and going strong. So stay strong. I will keep you in my thoughts.
Will definitely be sending prayers your way. Not only for a new kidney, but for the strength for you as you continue this journey. There is no right or wrong way to feel, because it is what you feel. Sometimes admitting we have the feelings, either positive or negative, is a step in the healing process. Just please know that you have tremendous support around you, even if it is coming through a computer monitor.!

over two years ago, my parents started looking into the kidney transplant process for my dad (but didn’t tell my sister or me). before they got through all the testing, my dad (a long-time diabetic) had a heart attack and had to undergo a double bypass and an aortic valve replacement in march. down the line on december 1st, my mom gave my dad the best gift ever – a kidney! and i am happy to say that they are now both doing well.
i’m confident that if they can get through all that, you will be able to kick your ailments in the butt!!

My sweet Bakerella!!!!!! I am so sorry to hear of your kidney being tired and ready to be done. My prayers are with you as you go through this time. The other day I was doing Yoga and the instructor in the video said when poses got hard, to just keep breathing, and it will be over soon and then it will pass. Then she said life is the same way. Some days we just have to keep breathing through it, and eventually it will pass. You are a wonderful person and there is no doubt that God and his angels are with you as you go through this. We LOVE YOU BAKERELLA!!!!!

I’m a big believer in prayer… It’s what got my family thru the crisis of a grand-daughter needing surgery within hours after birth, and my daughters battle with cancer. I will pray for you, your Mom, and your family. Keep that infectious positive attitude – it’s what made all of us love you! (I can’t help but think that your Mom must have this attitude too!)
