Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

Now the tables are turned and it’s our turn to lift you up – so here’s hoping that all this wonderful collected good energy does indeed do just that.

  69. Praying for you! God bless you and your wonderful talents! Hope you feel better soon!

  70. You ARE missed and prayers are being sent your way.

  71. So here is the best thing about your blog–you have been giving and giving endlessly to us, now you have all of these “friends” to support and pray for you. I will join with all the others, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray for a donor to be found quickly and I’ll gladly sign up to be tested!

There was a comment in your post that made my heart sad. My brother was an organ donor (2 years ago). The thought a part of him would live on for 18 years (18 years!), to help someone else would be amazing. I’m sure there is no let down on the donor or donor’s family’s part, except of course that you have to go through this again.

  72. uve been an inspiration to all of us to create something which we wldnt have dared to without ur tutorials. my prayers are with you and may u always keep faith.

  73. I’m prayng for you, Angie! I was thinking about you today when I saw Starbucks introduce cakepops in their line up! They could have mentioned your name for inventing the cakepop…I thought!
    Get better soon! :)

  74. I don’t know your pain, but I have been with someone that had to go thru this journey of yours in the past, so I have an idea of how big of a woman you are for enduring this, staying positive about it and sharing your challenge with this huge crowd of fans! I wish this time goes by really fast so you can go back to making our days colorful e yummy! Best wishes!

  75. So sorry to hear this. I love your blog and your book! I sincerely hope that you get the help you need either from your mom or a donor. Prayers and hugs!!!

  76. God Bless! I have a benign tumor on one of my kidneys and that pain is no joke!! I pray that you will be able to have surgery soon and be healthy and happy in no time!! :)

  77. So sorry to hear about your health issues. I will keep you in my prayers.

  78. Prayers to you and your family as you go through this trial. The right thing will happen; it may just take time. Good luck to you, and I pray that recovery happens quickly.

  79. Oh my, I’m so sorry to hear about this. Best of luck to you and your family, and I hope everything works out for you.

  80. WOW! Big hugs and many prayers coming your way! You’ve been on my mind a bunch this week as Starbucks is now selling cake pops. Every time I go there (which is quite often) I get a smile and see your face smiling out from behind them.

Keep us posted. Not only do we enjoy your creations, but we most definitely enjoy you more!

  81. Maybe I could make pops in the shape of cute kidneys to represent my hopeful wishes for your recovery. Your positivity and bright outlook will help you get through it all. Keep us posted.

  82. I knew I liked you for a reason! More than just your awesome, inspiring cake pops. I must have felt a connection to you. My husband has kidney failure and 7 years ago had a transplant, from a living donor. Unfortunately, he lost that transplant about 3.5 years ago. He is on the waiting list and everyone we know has been tested to be a donor. I was tested and didn’t match. I felt like my body had betrayed me by not being his match when he needs it so much. He has been on dialysis for the last 3.5 years. I guess what I am getting at is I know what you are going through. Well sorta, every situation is different, of course, but I know how hard this is. I hate the long boring waits in the hospital, with nothing to do, or want to do, but watch boring t.v. (We found the show Scrubs made tons more sense when you were actually in the hospital.) We struggle now with him wanting to do normal stuff, like work, and not having the energy or feeling well enough to do it. Your positive spirit and love of life will get you through…Good luck!

  83. Praying that your mother will be a match and a swift recovery for you and your mom.

  84. Best wishes and lots of prayers coming your way! Your smile and humor always brighten my day. I hope all these good wishes will brighten your days ahead :)

  85. You will be in my prayers. I know what you are going through. I helped my father during his transplant two years ago. All the cute cake pops and cupcakes will be waiting for your healthy happy return.

  86. Praying for you- you are such a joy to us all!

  87. You are in my prayers!

  88. Thank you for sharing. Big prayers for you to get better soon!

  89. Thinking of you and wishing you all my best. I have faith that you’ll find a donor soon.

  147. Praying. This will work out for the best, and I am praying for a match whether it be through your mother or another donation. Your presence is sorely missed – but above all – I (and we) value your health and happiness! You’ve given so much of yourself and your ideas over the last while; and I just am hoping that you can rest, and take some time to heal, and love on yourself as much as you’ve loved on all of us through you inspiration and as you said “cake pops, cupcakes and cute”.

  148. Oh NO. Get better soon! Sending you thoughts and prayers.

  150. I’ve never commented on your site, even though I read it everyday–often re-reading old posts to learn techniques or enjoy the pictures. I met you at your Nashville book-signing. I’m the Turtle Pop girl. I just wanted to tell you I will pray for your recovery and a matching donor. I don’t know if you are a religious person or not, so I hope you aren’t offended by that.

Your cake pops inspire me so much. I have always loved cooking and baking, and when I discovered your amazing little treats I just got lost in them. 177. Angels are a natural part of the scenery so don’t be surprised if you don’t recognize them right away. For it is not their shape, but their use that makes them angel.

I believe everybody has an angel looking after them. After reading your blog for so many months now. I realize your such a beautiful person. All things will work themselves out. May God bless you and your family as you go through this hard time.

  178. You have brightened my days so many times – I am thinking of you and keeping my fingers crossed for you to get better soon. Thank you for bringing fun and cute and inspiration all the way to cold Norway with your amazing blog:-) Wishing you all the best!

  180. Thoughts and prayers are with you!

  181. Bakerella, both you and your Mom are in my Prayers. I’m sure the donor of your kidney is smiling down with pride knowing that you gave a part of him/her a wonderful adventure. 18 years is a long time and you should be proud of yourself as I’m sure your donor and Mom are! I also wanted to Thank You for being so positive and inspiring! God Bless and I Pray all goes well with You and your Mom and for a speedy recovery.

  182. Get well soon!
    Lots of love and hugs!

  183. That sounds very stressful. Sending lots of positive energy your way.

  184. I want you to know, that as a family of a deceased donor, I would NOT feel the way you have described above about your kidney. It would make me proud to know that the kidney that was donated to you lasted so incredibly long!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE do not feel that your body let that wonderful kidney down!
Eighteen years of living, being alive with that kidney! Eighteen years that a donor (and their family) could have a sense of purpose for their loved one’s life.
Eighteen years to help deal with the pain of their loss.

Congratulations on 18 good years with your donor kidney! I pray that the next lasts as long or longer!
With your wonderful history, I’m sure it will!

Blessings to you, your family, your mom (especially), and to your hero donor family. I urge you to see your use of the kidney in a more positive light with a promise to you that you are NOT letting the donor family down.

  185. I wish you all the very best, and I really hope you’ll recover soon!

  186. God Bless You…sending warm and positive thoughts your way.

  187. ((HUGS))

  188. Bakerella- thank you for being you! your website has always brought a smile to my face- i hope that knowing you have the support of such a strong community behind you helps you in even a small way. we’ll be thinking about you

  195. You’re in our hearts – big love to you and your family.

  196. I’m in tears…have noticed your absence and missed it. Will be holding you in my thoughts and prayers. Sending good, sweet juju (and making chili with KIDNEY beans for good measure).

  197. Prayers and happy thoughts are going out for you! You are a very inspiring woman!

  198. 18 years is VERY remarkable for a kidney transplant!! You should be so proud of yourself to have taken care of that kidney for so long! I only hope mine lasts that long also! I had a kidney transplant in 2005, after a year of dialysis so I know EXACTLY what you are going through and believe me when I tell you that no one wishes you a new kidney and speedy recovery more than I! Hang in there and remind yourself, daily, that someone else has it much, much worse than you. When I would go into the hospital for my pre-transplant evaluations, I would see all the sick little kids walking around with cancers and other diseases and would stop feeling sorry for myself because I knew what I was going through was nothing compared to what they and their families would go through. Just a bump in the road, but you’ll get over it, I know you will! Many best wishes!!!!!

  199. Praying for tour health

  200. I am so sorry to hear about your illness and need for another transplant-your site is such a bright spot in my day and I have enjoyed watching all of your blossoming success. This too shall pass and maybe you will be inspired to make kidney shaped cake pops for Organ donor month! Much love and Hugs!
