Bikini Beach Bears

Bikini Beach Bear Cupcakes

Well, today is the first day of summer and what could be better than going to the beach? A beach cupcake! That way, I don’t even have to get into a bathing suit. (Not to mention, I’m not near the beach, so this will have to do.) Aren’t these little bears just too cute. And they’re pretty tasty, too. Here’s what I used:

  • Cupcakes and frosting (tinted blue)
  • Blue baking cups
  • Cocktail umbrellas
  • Bears – Honey Teddy Grahams and I just used a candy writer to draw their tiny little bathing suits on with a toothpick. For the faces, I used an edible ink pen. (I keep finding new uses for this thing. I love it.)
  • Inner tubes – Lifesavers Gummies
  • Towels and floats – Fruit Roll Ups
  • Beach Balls – small gumballs
  • Beach sand – Okay, this is difficult to look at. For the weak at heart, close your eyes. I’m sorry to say I had to sacrifice a few little teddy bears. They tried their best to escape…
“Please save us!”

  1. Made these myself for a work beach BBQ. They went down a storm, especially with the (big) kids. I was amazing how easy it was to recreate – a bit fidly but easy – thanks so much for all your great ideas

  2. Definitely making these. Not sacrificing any bears, using crushed graham crackers. (:

  3. I like it …… but its very difficult

  4. LOVE this idea but as long as we’re anthropomorphizing bears why no bears of other races?? I will definitely be using chocolate and cinnamon teddy grahams as well. We need to support diversity even in our desserts!!! :)

  5. I need to make these and eat them everyday!

  6. I made these for my son’s beach themed party this weekend and they were a huge hit! Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. I absolutely love everything on this site.
I love baking & i know for a fact im going to use alot of stuff on this site!
Espiacelly for my birthday in afew weeks(:
But these cupcakes are simply the cutest!

  8. I just made these! I didn’t use the buttercream frosting though, as I live in Australia and we rarely use that type of icing, I used basic icing sugar and water with food colouring. I realised halfway through the half sand/half water cupcakes that I should have used yellow icing underneath the sand, but I made some yellow icing for the full sand cupcakes and they look great! I also skipped the clothing, so its a nude beach, haha. I’m so pleased and even my boyfriend thinks they’re fair cool. Thankyou so much Bakerella! Next: your Red Velvet Cake :)

  9. I came across these for my 3 and 1 year old kids birthday party (beach theme – we live by the beach). It turned out so cute and just for a lil more fun I bought some gummy sharks and put one off in a corner with a teddy graham making a scared face just to see if anyone noticed. I will be making a larger one this next weekend for the big party with lots of family and friends.

  10. I LOVE the teddies trying to escape, so cute! and included it in our summer cupcake feature! Feel free to check it out http://partycupcakeideas.com/50-super-ideas-for-a-summer-cupcake-part-2/

  11. What a creative and cute idea! i think they came out great :)

  12. That is soooooooooo cute

  13. This is so cute! I think I might use some Teddy Grahams and the tools you used to make some ballet bear cupcakes for my daughter’s 3rd bday.

That drowning bear on one of the cupcakes is hilarious!

  14. I made beach theme cupcakes that I just blogged about. The only difference was that mine had seashells! I love the little umbrellas, I wish I would of thought of that before I sent my order out!

  15. I just found your site … I came across these and couldn’t believe it. I’d made some very similar to these for our neighborhood pool party a couple years ago. I’d used crushed vanilla wafer cookies…my teddys weren’t as deocrated, but the kids LOVED them. Cute! Cute! Cute

  16. These are so amazing! Great idea!

  17. hahahhahahaha awww nothing like bears in bikinis to get me in the mood for summer.

  18. i made them for my little sister jessica at her birthaday she fell head over tails!

  19. Jessel – you already commented on this post. (#73) back in April and I responded. I’m sure I didn’t see you photos, but you are absolutely right about seeing ideas and being influenced.

I made these very same cupcakes too, but almost 2 years ago. Sometimes it’s easy to see something, be inspired by it, then forget where the inspiration came from. They are too very similar to my own to have not been inspired by mine (which were in turn inspired by someone else’s).

  21. Hi – I'm the previously anonymous poster from a few comments back. I just found my cupcake photos on flickr (didn't renew my pro account so it took awhile to find the old pix…):

  22. So cute!! I just made them for my daughter's birthday.

  25. gonna make these cupcakes and celebrate the last day of school with my 2nd graders and the Bikini Beach Bears! We’re also gonna bring in beach towels and our favorite teddy bear for a picnic! thanks for your great idea!

  26. They do too look nice. Great job.

    Bakerella

  27. Hi! I copied your wonderful idea, I hope you don’t mind! It’s my son’s third birthday, and I wanted to do something fun… and when I came across these I just couldn’t resist!

    Pics: Here and here!

They don’t look as nice as yours, but I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out! Thank you for the inspiration!

  28. I’ve only seen these blue ones from http://www.confectioneryhouse.com

But, I just saw some candy writers at Williams Sonoma this weekend.

Other than that, try cake supply stores or online

  29. Bakerella,

I love these! Do you mind if I ask if you’ve ever seen blue baking cups or the candy writers in a local store? I need to make these SOON, so I don’t have time to order online!

  30. Or just maybe people can have the same good ideas. I’d love to see your pics. I’ve seen lots of variations of these since I posted them.

  31. I made these very same cupcakes too, but almost 2 years ago. Sometimes it’s easy to see something, be inspired by it, then forget where the inspiration came from. They are too very similar to my own to have not been inspired by mine (which were in turn inspired by someone else’s).

  32. LWK – They look GREAT!

  33. These are the cutest! I had so much fun making them for my twin babies’ Hawaiian-themed-birthday party. Check out the picture at my blog: http://mommyisnotachef.blogspot.com/2009/03/tropical-beach-cupcakes.html
Thank you so much for posting, everybody at the party loved the cupcakes!

  34. joanh – the pens come in really handy for lots of uses. Hope you try them.

  35. omg these are sooo cute. i will have to buy an edible pen soon to try these out. i keep drooling over your candy pops but they seem like so much work! but this i might be able to do..

  36. Well, come back anytime, Sara

  37. wow……So amazing! I am just in love with your blog now!

  38. Thanks

  39. These are the cutest little things ever ! :D

  40. Super cute Nanette!

  41. These were so much fun to make! Check out the link to pictures below… I made them for my mommy group here in Virginia :) Thank you for your creativeness, my kids and I love your cupcakes!

    ~Nanette :)

  42. They look fantastic!

  43. I made these for my daughters 2nd birthday party – go here to check them out

    http://comber-family.blogspot.com/2008/07/beach-party-in-winter.html

my sister ended up putting the cakes all together and doing a whole “beach” sand – breaking waves, blue water – she is so smart!

  44. They will get a little mushy, so they are best to serve the same day. I guess they are absorbing moisture from the frosting. On the Bear pops, though, they didn’t get that mushy, since they were surrounded by candy coating

  45. Does anyone know if you decorate the bears the day before will they get mushy? thanks.

  46. colleen – well, get to it :)

Anonymous – I love graham crackers, don’t you!

  47. Some people are just so creative! Thanks for sharing. Another idea for sand (for those that can’t stand the thought of sacrificing delicious Teddy Grahams :) ) is using/creating graham cracker crumbs from regular/flavored graham crackers. I think you can buy them in crumbs already, too.

  48. wow…you never cease to amaze me!!! I want to go bake some right now!

  49. Teanna – thanks and I’m glad you like the new look.

hoLLy – Just make these and tell your kids you came up with it. I won’t say anything.

  50. my kids would just love to help me make these. they are so adorable! i wish i was clever like you:) but until i become miraculously clever, i’ll just keep checking out your blog:)

  62. Toni – Thanks – It was really fun assembling them.

    Melissa – Wow! I’m flattered.

  63. cutest cupcakes I’ve ever seen!!!

  64. My favorite part of the whole thing is how you assembled the cupcakes into a beach scene, with all the watery ones at the bottom, and the sandy ones with umbrellas at the top. Excellent presentation!

  65. katy – you are welcome

The Flirty Girl – thanks, for saying so.

hope – That makes me happy! I’m smiling too now!

  71. very cute! cant wait to see what you have in store for the 4th of July!

  72. Oh I was so sorry for the poor little felows in the food processor! But the cupcakes turned out so cute and adorable, love them!

  73. You are amazing and do the cutest stuff!

  74. Extremely creative! Thank you for your inspiration!

  75. That is so cute!

  76. Very innovative. Great for a theme party. Super fun, as usual!

  77. I did a beach themed cake a few weeks ago and I was just amazed at how many things you can do with Fruit roll ups. We rolled them into beach balls, cut bikinis out of them for the Teddy Grahams, made towels, a little beach chair…so many possibilities! Thanks for sharing yours, they’re adorable!

  78. Recently, two people have posted beach themed cupcakes (also using Teddy Grahams) on Flickr (Cupcakes Take the Cake photo pool). You may consider giving them some credit, too…

  79. these are great! can I come live with you and eat all of your goodies?! :)

  80. omg, thats just way too adorable to eat…. but i would anyway… hahaha.

  81. These are AWESOME!
I think I may save these for the end of the Summer and bring them in as a treat for when my kids go back to daycare!

  82. too cute!

  83. You are a creative genius! These are so adorable!

  84. Bakerella you are just TOO much…oh how I laughed at these WONDERFUL cupcakes. The little bikini’s are just TOO cute. I LOVE these..definately have to try them in the future.
I made your fizzy cupcakes yesterday and once again a hit. I also made your chocolate cupcakes this week with another attempt at the transfers. I am going to go post them in my blog now, so check them out when you get a chance.
    You’re the best..thanks again : )

  85. Frannie and I just LOVE these cupcakes. Last week we made our version of your cake pops. We had so many compliments on how they looked and the way they tasted. We are definitely trying these next! Frannieandme.blogspot.com

  86. AWESOME!! Thanks for sharing bakerella and hope you have a great summer!!

  87. Oh how adorable!!!They are super cute!!!

  88. How cute!

  89. I have made these cupcakes too and I want to share a hint that I learned the hard way – you cannot refrigerate these to serve the next day – the Teddy Grahams get soft and mushy and will break off at the “float” – do not assemble until shortly before serving!

  90. They are so cute and fresh… With that view, who doesn’t want to go to the beach? (and take a lot of photos, yeah…) ;-))))

    Your imagination is amazing.

  91. LOVE it LOVE it LOVE it!

  92. Too cute! Are you sharing these with someone?

  93. unbelievably cute!! love the detailing!!
