Candy Cup Caps

Stuff

Can you guess what I’m going to make with all this stuff?

Candy Cup Caps

Little bitty candy cup graduation caps. That’s what.

I don’t even know anyone that’s graduating this year. But, because so many of you asked… here they are and hope you like…

Rainbow Candy

Airheads Extremes Rainbow Berry Sweetly Sour Belts! Ummm… Can you say mouthful? When I found these in the candy aisle at the drug store, I had to grab them. I knew I could find something fun to do with them.

Rainbow Candy Belts

And besides… they’re just plain pretty!

Rainbow Candy

These were definitely the inspiration for the graduation caps. They make perfect tassles and give you color choices at the same time. Just cut apart each color strip with a knife.

Reese's

Now, grab a bag of miniature Reese’s peanut butter cups. But, before you unwrap them, stick them in the freezer for a few minutes. It will make it easier to remove the wrapper and keep the sides looking pretty when you do.

Reese's

If you remove the wrappers while the candies are room temperature, the sides sometimes come off with the wrapper like this. But that’s okay, because these rejects taste good.

Reese's

After you unwrap them, place all the cups on a sheet of wax paper and let them get back to room temperature. When the chill is gone, dip the end of your lollipop stick in some melted candy coating and carefully insert into the candy cups. If they are too cold, the cups will split apart. Just insert the sticks about halfway and let dry.

Caps

Now, work on the tops. I used these small Godiva chocolate squares. They aren’t the cheapest little things, but the proportions were perfect and because they were individually wrapped, the edges were clean. I found them at a store called the World Market a while ago. Just draw a thin line of candy coating on top with a toothpick and glue on a short piece of the candy belt and a rainbow chip sprinkle in the same color to match.

Candy Cup Caps

When the tops are dry, glue them on the candy cups using some more of the candy coating and insert into a styrofoam block to finish drying.

Cute!

But, wait a minute. What if you don’t want brown graduation caps?

Or maybe you’re just dying to do the whole cake pop thing. Well, you’re in luck.

Graduation Cake Pops

Grab some colored candy melts and get your hands on one of these square candy molds.

Pour some melted candy coating in each square and then drop it on the counter several times to flatten/smooth out the chocolate. Put them in the freezer for a few minutes and it will be easier to pop them out of the molds.

Graduation Cake Pops

You can also use one of these medium size candy cup molds. I’ve shown them before with the Cake Bite Method. Just fill the bottom of the cup with some melted candy. Place small, chilled cake ball shapes (smaller than the width of the mold) and push them into the candy coating until the coating inches up the sides. That one on the right is how they look for the Cake Bite Method, but for these they should be almost flush with the height of the molds.

Graduation Cake Pops

Then, cover the exposed areas with more melted candy coating. When covered, insert lollipop sticks about halfway in. By the way, using chilled cake balls here helps the sticks stand up straight when you insert them. Then place these in the freezer for a few minutes and when dry, they’ll pop out relatively easy. Don’t try to pull them out by the sticks, though. Push them out by pressing on the mold underneath.

Then, you can glue everything on. Instead of rainbow chip sprinkles, use a mini-size m&m because these hats are larger in size than the Reese’s version.

Graduation Cake Pops

And there you have it… Colored Candy Covered Cake Ball Caps!

P.S. If you can’t find Airheads Extremes Rainbow Berry Sour Belts, then try pull apart Twizzlers. They are bigger and round, but if you cut them in half, I think you can glue them, flat side down.

  3. love these so much, they turned out great and were easy to make

  4. Dumb question here… What do you use for melted candy coating? just chocolat? And can you freeze them?

  5. Dumb question – I am sorry… What do I use for melted candy coating?

  6. If made the Reese’s cups version a day in advance, should they be refrigerated overnight? Or left out at room temp. I don’t want to weaken the chocolate “glue”

  7. Hi! I am not knowledgeable on creating these kinds of things, but this looks amazing! How exactly does one “glue” it on? Is there a special candy glue?
    Thanks!

  9. Hi Angie,

These are so adorable! We absolutely loved how you used the Airhead Extremes as the tassel on the graduation caps! We loved this so much that we featured it on our blog: http://bit.ly/1lNSiEW

We can’t wait to see what other brilliant ideas you cook up!!

  10. I would love to hear about your fun ideas.

  11. I made these the day of my graduation party.. Instead of godiva, I used hershey’s two bars next to each other. Instead of using melted chocolate to apply them together, I used a butane torch (you can also use a lighter). Then I got a Styrofoam ball, cut it in half spray painted it black and stuck the sticks into that to have an easy way to present them.

  12. cute

  13. I love these graduation favors. Could you tell me how far in advance I can make them.

  31. My daughter is graduating in August to become an RN. This is a great idea!

  32. you should use a bit of icing to make the string coming off the hat and use some more icing to attach the resse’s to choc. for choc. you can use hershey bars and use 2 rectangles of choc. (that makes a perfect square) and turn the side of the choc. that says hershey upside down so you get a clean plain perfect square of chocolate for the hats

They don’t have the molds like yours in canada, so I bought a taller square silicone mold and will only fill it up a bit and the mold you used for the hat in your snowman cupcakes. Wish me luck!!

  51. Awesome! I just made these with my 11 and 9 yr old for my son’s fifth grade moving up to middle school. They were easy enough for them to do most of the work. My son cannot wait to bring them into school tomorrow for his last day of elementary school.
You are just so creative! :)
    Jenn

  56. Im so excited to make these tomorrow! I bought all the stuff today and just finished baking my cake:) I’m making them as soon as I’m off work tomorrow my niece and cousin graduate wednesday and this is their surprise:)

  57. I love these and want to make them for my daughters graduation party in a few weeks, but the only question that I have it what do you use as glue? What is the yellow dot? I was thinking of using 2 hershey candy bar squares as the top instead of the chocolates that you used. Your thoughts?

    Thanks,
    clgrimes

  58. Can I make these ahead?? and maybe freeze them??? I have a ton of baking to do next week right before graduation of my daughter and want to make these candies for her party too…Just worried about timing..

  59. Absolutely adorable! Thank you so much for sharing :)

  60. I made them last night for my sister’s & cousin’s graduation & they were a HIT. However, instead of Godiva squares (which J didn’t want to shell out money for) I used two of the Hershey’s individual rectangle pieces together because they make a square & were perfectly proportioned.

  61. So creative! I’m hopefully going to do these for my sister. I hope they come out as great as yours! (:
    *greetings from Georgia!

  62. These were easy to make and such a hit at my husbands law school graduation dinner!! They were gone before dinner!! So great!

  92. World Market is a GREAT store. My daughter once liked this toy she found there so much that I got it for her for Xmas. :D

  93. OK- I am 11 years old and I can make these. They are soooooo easy and my cousin is graduating this year! What a cute way to say Congrats!!!!!!!

  94. Hi!
About a month ago, one of my fellow employees graduated from college. A while earlier, i had made cake bites to share. she loved them and asked me to make some for her party, so i used the cake bite method. instead of using store bought chocolate squares, i made my own tops by melting (but not completely) chocolate and using a square fondant cutter because i didn’t have time to buy online. i had covered the edges in sprinkles, they looked and tasted great. for the tassels, i still used the airhead extremes, but i made smaller strips halfway. these were the hit of the party!!!

  95. OMG!!! these are AWESOME!! but im about a year late

  96. awwwwh i love it soo much
    my graduation this year :D:D
    hnoofa from saudi arabia :D

  97. I made this last weekend for my friends graduation and they were the hit of the party!!! I used milk chocolate-caramel Ghirardelli squares and Juicy Fruit gum cut into strips for the tassel.

  98. Made the pops for my son and daughter’s double graduation party. Did different color tassels for each school. They were the hit of the party!! People couldn’t believe I made them.

  99. I made these for my sister’s graduation and they were a HIT! Great idea!!!

  100. I just made these but instead i used m&ms instead of the sprinkles since i couldnt find those and i couldnt find the extreme sour belts anywhere so my tassles look a bit weird cause they wont hang down correctly i had to use these sour straw things that i thought would work fine. i live in anaheim,ca do u know anywhere that would have the extreme sour belts??? the twizzlers i got didnt work either

  101. So I’m attempting both of these tonight for my brother and cousin’s graduation party!

  102. You are Awsome Thank You soooo much for your Awsome crafty ideas with food….. My son’s class will love these! :)

  103. Will the Ghiradelli chocolate squares work?

  104. i love themmm they were soooooooooooooo yummy. your so good at making stuff yummy and simple

  105. wow, the creativity! I am humbled by it. I tried making cake pops – mine weren’t as cute but I am going to keep on trying until I get it right!

  106. I just made the chocolate ones for college graduation! They’re adorable, and they were really easy to make! Thanks for the idea!

  107. All I can say is DITTO! (to all the previous comments :)

  108. Wow! I just “stumbled” across your blog looking for graduation party favors! These are adorable and doable!! I will def. be making these for my daughter’s upcoming graduation party.
I’m so happy I found your blog.

  109. I Love this Idea! my mom is graduating from college in May and I will surprise her with these cuties!

  110. So clever and soooo cute! I’m definitely saving this one :)

  111. they were soooooooooooooo good

  112. Can these be made ahead and stored in the freezer? If so, how long?

  113. Hi bakerella! I’m planning on making these for my sisters graduation and I was wondering if it would work if I just filled the cups with chocolate rather then inserting the cake balls. Sorry if this is a silly question but it seems like everytime I try to change one of your recipes I mess it up. Thanks!

  114. Oh my goodness! You make some of the cutest things I have ever seen and these are up there with the top! I will be making these for sure…most likely for my sons 5th grade graduation. Thanks for the FABULOUS idea!!

  115. Thank you for great Ideas, manny things are so easy to make… You are Great.
    Regards from Puebla

  116. Barbara – several days.

  117. I have to make these for my daughters friends Graduation party only I will use their school colors Black and Yellow.

  118. How many days in advance can you make them?

  119. I just found your website today, and I am making notes as to what I will copy of yours this weekend. You are super talented.

  120. michelle – you can get colored candy melts at craft stores.

  121. where can I get the royal blue baking chips??? That is my son’s school color and the site you have linked for them are a different blue than what you did yours in.

  122. these are so cute.. imma make some for graduation!
but its all about that c/o 2010
    :)

  123. You can try licorice.

  124. These look so amazing! I love peanut butter cups! I really want to make these for my class at the end of the year, but I can’t find the “tassels”. What can I use instead of them?

    Love you’re blog!

  125. My son is going through an 8th grade graduation next week. I've got these down to make for the occasion. Thanks for the great idea. They look quick and easy and I need that.

  126. You can, but don't have to if you wrap them in little treat bags.

  127. These are cute! Should I store them in the fridge the night before I am using them? What is the most effective way to store these??

  128. I made these great grad hats for my children's classes. They were a huge hit! On my second batch I tried to use Walmart brand peanut butter cups as I had to make 75. They taste as good as Reeses BUT do not work well at all. The cups kept cracking when I put the pop sticks in.
I had so many compliments on them…Thank you very much for the great idea!

    Erin

  129. Hi there! I MADE THESE for my daughter's kindergarten graduation! Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for the great idea, you're awesome!

  133. Thank you for such a great idea!! I made these for a graduation party this past Saturday and they were a big hit!!! Here is my post abt it
    http://neveradullmomentforlynn.blogspot.com/2009/06/could-it-be.html
but I have to apologize for at first thanking you on my blog. I went back in to edit in your blog and the post for the hats. I was so excited abt actually finishing them that I forgot to give credit where credit was due (I did give you credit in a previous post, but wanted to make sure it was there with the picture)
Thanks again for a great idea! Now I need to try your cake pops!

  134. I'm graduating high school this year, and am I having a party afterwards. I knew I'd be making cupcakes(it's gotten to the point where my friends expect them) but I needed something else. I wracked my brains but couldn't think of anything graduation-related. Then my friend sent me a link here and I had my answer. Everyone will be so impressed! Thank you!

  135. So creative! I'm in awe. Thanks for sharing this idea. :)

  136. Oh also, since I am on an all liquid diet (I know it's like punishment to make candies while dieting), I used a tooth pick dipped in the milk chocolate to fill in the cracks of the reese cup. Looked just as if they came from the facorty! Thanks for your rockin' ideas!

  137. I actually made these for my husband's cousin's graduation. I did the milk chocolate and reese cups with red string on them. I was amazed at how much of the sour string was in each package. I ended up making about 50. They were a huge hit! Now everyone is asking what is going on for the fourth of July! so if you have any ideas, i would appreciate it!

  138. Thank you so much! i think it's a great idea!!!! I would like to try…

  139. Great idea! My mom and I are making this this weekend for my sisters graduation, and I can't wait to get started. Thanks for sharing such wonderful instructions!

Hey y'all! Glad you are rocking these caps. They all look great. Glad your grads loved them, too.

  144. I love these my sister graduated this year so the night before her party I stayed up until 3:30 making 50+ grad caps. I just used hershey’s chocolate for the top I just broke two pieces together and I used melted hershey’s chocolate chips to glue everything together so all the chocolate was consistant. Everyone kept coming up to me and telling me how fabulous they were. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  145. i just wanted to say how much i love your site. I get hungry every time i come here (which isn’t a good thing sometimes!! lol) love the graduation caps. my sister is graduating tomorrow from a university and i would love to make this for her. how fun!

  146. I made these for a party, not only did my 19 year old Brother LOVE them… but I have been asked to make them again for upcoming Graduation parties. I love your blog, I’m a big fan. Thanks for taking the time to give us these beautiful new ideas.
    -Stephanie

  147. After seeing these on your web site, I just had to make them for my daughters graduation, and boy were they a hit. Everyone thought they were so cute, but that they tasted even better. Thanks for all the good ideas!

  151. Hi Bakerella, I’ve been tuning into your blog for a few good months now and thought it was so great that you made the graduation caps – I had just googled that idea on another site a day before you posted! I wanted to share with you my results :-) thanks for being such an inspiration! (oh, and I so used your reese’s freezer tip – thanks!)

  152. I just made these and they are sticking in florist foam in my fridge. I was running out of chocolate, so I ‘glued’ everything on with a little bit of corn syrup.

I couldn’t find the airheads candy you found, so I used these rainbow twizzlers, cut them along one of the grooves and then used a pizza cutter to cut them into strips. Not quite as attractive as yours, but still worked pretty well!

  153. Love this project…I made them too…you can check how mine came out and the *slight* adjustments I made at http://trapperkeepers.tumblr.com/post/111573540/got-a-graduation-coming

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  154. These are so cute! I had a blast making them (something I can rarely say when I’m in the kitchen – haha). Thanks for sharing this idea! I just finished a batch for my friend’s graduation party. It will give me a chance to show my artistic friend that I can be creative, too :)

  155. Hi there!
I totally want to make the cake ball ones for my cousins graduation…and actually need the blue ones just like you made…where can I find that color of candy melts? The ones on amazon were a very light blue!
    thank you!!

  156. I made these for my husband’s college graduation last weekend. He’s 31 and getting his Bachelor’s degree so while he didn’t want a big deal made, he did appreciate his family throwing him a tiny little party and making it into the big deal it should be. And my mother-in-law now thinks I’m brilliant (I gave you all credit, of course, but she has no idea about you… yet). Thanks.

  157. Seriously amazing!

  158. I love this!!!I wish I found this last week when I was trying to find soemthing to make for a grad party I went to! So cute!!!

  159. Okay, I just made these and they turned out SOO cute! I changed a few things though – I used milk chocolate squares from Hershey (because they were cheaper) and because I couldn’t find those sour belts, I cut strips of a yellow fruit rollup and used that. They turned out great and I can’t wait to see what people think at my brother’s graduation party on Friday! Thanks Bakerella :)

  160. These are amazing!!!! literally and so cute too. I wouldn’t want to eat them just keep them forever.

  161. wish I lived closer to my step daughter I would make them for her party

  162. These are adorable! I may have to make some for my graduation party. Thanks so much for the idea. :)

  163. made these for my son’s graduation open house and they were a HUGE hit:) everyone thought they were super clever and cute and of course, delicious. thanks so much!

  164. These turned out great! A tip-since I couldn’t find Godiva, I searched for an alternative and found it in a bag of Hershey’s Cacao Reserve at Walmart. The squares are individually packaged and I used the milk choc to match the Reese’s pb cups. Also, since time was short, I didn’t bother with the popsicle stick. So fun. Thanks Bakerella! -Andra

  165. I made these for my BFF’s daughter’s graduation party. Her school’s colors were green and gold, so I used the green and yellow strip of airhead candy (I didn’t cut them apart–I was afraid they would be too thick, but they looked great!). I just used a regular sized chocolate chip on top of the hat, since I couldn’t find the different color ones. Everyone RAVED about them, and I shared your website address so they could make their own! I need to see how far Tucker is from Powder Springs–that cake store you posted about looks AMAZING–and I don’t think there is anything like that any closer to me, LOL!

  166. Very cute! :-)You really do see outside the box :-)

Oh Bakerella, I’m so happy to say my very first attempt of the cake balls is a success! I steamed the cake cause I’m not used to cooking in the oven LoL.

Chocolate Cake Balls Link Thank You, Thank You

  167. I’m about to make these bad boys for my grad party tomorrow! Wish me luck!

  168. Jaime – Yes. candy coating is like chocolate bark. But the candy melts come in other colors besides chocolate and vanilla. The round things are mini M&Ms.
