Make these in the morning. You’ll be glad you did.
I was flipping through some of my cookbooks the other day and became mesmerized by a recipe for these biscuits from the book Deep Dark Chocolate. It’s filled with decadent recipes using dark chocolate. And with a title like that I would normally go for something all chocolate, super rich and fudgy. And I almost always pick a recipe accompanied by a photo. I’m very visual and like to see what I’m in for before hand. This one didn’t have a photo with it, but it still captivated me.
Swirled chocolate in a biscuit.
I’m all in.
These are pretty quick to make. You can have one in your tummy in no time.
Chopped dark chocolate.
Get it. Get it good.
Beginnings of the biscuits.
Flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and buttah.
Stir in some milk and the dough will start to come together.
Flour your work surface and hands and form the sticky dough into a ball that you can then start to flatten and roll.
Roll into a rectangular shape.
Spread some softened butter on top.
Sprinkle with a bit of sugar.
And a little chocolate. Just a little. ; )
And roll it up all jelly roll style for chocolaty swirls.
Then cut the roll into equal sections.
Like so. Maybe smaller chocolate chunks would have made my swirls more distinct.
That’s ok. I’m good with over-the-top chocolate.
Umm… yeah. Totally fine with that.
Eat them warm from the oven.
Warm with a little melted butter. Yes, please.
A yummy way to start the day.

Made these this morning. Sooooooo good :)
I just tried your recipe and our B&B guests loved them. I’ve posted my photos and your recipe (with credit to you and Sara Perry) on our blog at http://americusgardeninn.blogspot.com/2014/01/chocolate-swirl-biscuits.html
These look delicious! I’m looking for recipes to make for brunch this weekend and I think I will have to try these! Yum!
gosh, they look delicious! now, if I can only figure out how to make them non-dairy…
Oh my these look so yummy! If I have all of the ingredients then I will be making them tonight!
Is the amount for the baking powder correct, 1 Tablespoon? That Sounds like a lot …
I want to make these with cheese! You are always so inspiring, Bakerella!
After I saw all the wonderful comments I decided I wanted to try them! I am going to try them tomorrow and I will get back as soon as I can!!!
P.S. I want to try them today but I am going out of town!!!
Can I use mini chocolate chips instead of chopping the chocolate?
Saw this recipe in one of the business news sites, I tried it right away, and SUPER! It’s so easy to make and YUMMY!!
wow. its sweet . thanks
Loved these and so did all my family of 8. Very yummy. We added Peanut butter to them instead of butter when they got done very yummy.
These biscuits are to die for! Tender, buttery, and chocolaty.. what’s not to love!! :) And, I was surprised how easy the dough was to work with by hand since I’m not a biscuit baker. Chocoholics, you will love these!!
Hi bakerella, my name is Maria. This is an amazing recipe. I love all your recipes so much that I tried and added this one to my blog, but giving the link to here, as the original source, as I always do with everything I publish. Thank you very much for your time and kind consideration and for the excellent recipes you bring to us.
I know this recipy, we use to make it with my Great-Granma…but with brown sugar instead of chocolat…and we called it ”les pete de soeur” or if you prefer ” the nun farts” lol.lol.lol
Gosh, these are good! I made these this morning and unfortunately I didn’t have much milk chocolate on hand. ????. But, there’s always a solution! I used a combination of milk chocolate and WHITE chocolate. Deliscious! I was wondering if there could be any other filling. The only one I’ve thought of is no butter on the dough and adding jam on top with a sprinkling of sugar. I haven’t tried these yet though!????
oh my goodness such a beautiful dish. i will prepare it now and keep posting thanks a lot.
Anything that gets chocolate into my belly first thing in the morning is A-OK by me! Will be making these soon :)
I just made these last night…thanks Angie!! I actually have this book and everything that I’ve made out of it is crazy delicious!!
I had a question or two…did you use melting chocolate? How can they be a little more soft, not so crunchy…more like a fluffy and flakey dinner biscuit?
Although I didn’t hear any complaints, I’m harder on myself…a detail oriented perfectionist. hahahaha!
Thanks again Angie, love it here!!
Made a batch last night and we couldn’t stop eating until they were all gone…they are simply delicious!! since I absolutely loooove dark chocolate, this is just the perfect treat for me :)
My mother’s side of the family always made chocolate rolls and this is the closest recipe that I’ve found to their recipe. I will definitely have to try these. They use a bread and butter plate and cut a circle of dough. Then put the butter, chocolate and sugar in the center of the dough and turn the edges into the center. It oozes out the center and is fantastic. This should be just as good and a lot prettier. Thanks
I made these, and they’re great! So easy and so delicious…thanks for sharing!
Chocolate for breakfast!? Yes, please. One question… I find normal biscuits dry unless slathered in butter. Does the the chocolate take the place of the butter or is there a trick to keep them moist?
I made these this afternoon with mini chocolate chips and chopped mini marshmallows, and they are divine! Thank you for such a fantastic recipe!
Yum cannot wait to try and make these.
I made these for a friend and I made a chocolate ganche to drizzle on the top. They were the talk of the office..
I love the look of these – funny how biscuits in America are very different to what we call biscuits! But I certainly am going to try these out – thanks for this :)
these just came out of the oven and I couldnt help myself and tasted them! delicious! thank you so much :) oh, and pretty easy to make!
Definitely a delicious way to start your day…or end it with a midnight snack, too!!!
Hummmmmmmmmmmmm I like it!!!
I’ve nominated you for the “Very Inspiring Blogger Award”
Come check it out at’http://www.twogirlscookingblog.com/2012/08/very-inspiring-blogger-award/
Holy cow those look delish! I think I may try them tomorrow with some Bisquick mix and crushed chocolate chips!!!
Just made a batch of these and had to come back to your site to comment. They are wonderful right out of the oven and not as tricky as I thought. I used chopped semi-sweet chips and 2% milk to avoid a trip to the store and they came out great. I rolled the dough out pretty thin and wrapped tightly for a million layers of melty goodness. Thanks Bakerella!!
Wow! These look so delightful! I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I have to save the link though, so I can come back and actually read it. I haven’t had breakfast yet, I need to eat first before I read food stuff… the pictures made my tummy grumble.
This is my first visit. I’m always looking for new recipes to try and I love sweets and I do enjoy baking! I’m defintely inspired… and hungry! LoL.
Cute blog and yummy post!
These look so delicious! All the photos just make them look irresistable.
Yay! I absolutely love this recipe! The biscuits came out to be godly for me.
The website I included is your recipe on my personal blog! I shared it so friends and family can enjoy this goodness as well :]
These are so good! The boy friend ate five of them before I yelled at him to lay off! =D Went home and made them the very day you posted this! I used Milk Chocolate instead of Dark because I apparently ran out =P This one was added to my recipe book! Thanks so much for sharing! Can’t wait to see what you’ll post next! Your 14 layer cake, Key lime cream cake, pillow cookies, peanut butter cookies, and the cinnamon rolls “swirls” are also in my recipe book!
This recipe is the greatest!
It look soo god !!
brrrrrrrrrrrrg these look good
Looks absolutely delicious! I would so love to try some. Reminds me of the wonderful pastries I ate in France.
Dejame decirte que son muy buenas estas galletas! El mismo dia que publicaste la receta las hice. En mi casa dicen que les falta azucar pero para mi fue de lo mejor cuando las saque del horno y me las comi! Felicitaciones… Saludos desde Venezuela

Oh, my gosh — these seriously look amazing! Thank you for sharing, they are beautiful! :-)
This post literally made me groooooan with pleasure… if only I could get up early enough to actually bake something before work!!!
Ahhhhh! Decadent and delicious looking. Must make.
these look amazing! would they still work if I used the pillsbury pizza crust dough, instead of homemade dough?
YUMM! Now I am craving something bitter an chocolate….do you have a recipe for croissants? :)
Would I be able to use semi-sweet chocolate instead? Or perhaps even mix some of the semi-sweet with the dark chocolate?
Yum, who could resist those chocolate biscuits? They are a site to behold. Happy 2nd birthday so glad you are still around to enjoy life and all it has to offer!
Happy 2nd Birthday!!! 20 years ago today you received a precious gift. Thank you to all organ donors around the world.
Wow… There’s nothing more i can say…
Happy 2nd BIrthday :)
Yum! Who needs cinnamon rolls when you have over-the-top-chocolatey rolls!
Mmm…and I just read on Twitter (so it has to be true!) that women release more endorphins after eating chocolate than after kissing. So, really, these are pretty good for us!
I can’t think of a better way to start the day!!! I can’t wait to make these :)
Looks good! I’ve made rolls like these a couple times, but with yeasted dough. They were pretty awesome.
This looks amazing I can’t wait to try :)
These look amazing! I will have to try these! Thanks for sharing!!

Hmm…would milk chocolate work?
You must be secretly conspiring to destroy my healthy eating habits. But my goodness, I love your baking.
These chocolate biscuits, plus you’re delicious recipe for black bottom banana cupcakes (which I ate as muffins), make my mornings so much better. :)
You had me @ Chocolate! Amazing stuff!
A little chocolate!!! Oh, my word, there was more chocolate then dough! LOL I loved it! It’s too darn bad I am a diabetic now because I’d make these every Sunday and eat all of them, maybe I’d give two to my husband, maybe! LOL
Oh. My. Word. Can I just eat these for every meal for the rest of my life? These look like perfection.
These look delicious! I am a serious dark chocolate lover and a big fan of breakfasts that could double as desserts!
I don’t like chocolate in my bread-y things (pancakes, scones, muffins, and rolls) but I bet this would taste amazing with cinnamon or toffee bits. I am a fan of the no rise time!
As soon as I saw this recipe I knew I had to make it. And did make it! They are amazing, perfect for any time of the day. Thanks for the post, you made my breakfast super yummy! ;)
These look scrumptious! Unfortunately, with 105F+ temperatures here, baking must wait. As soon as it cools off, I’m going to give these a go!
these look so YUM and easy to make, i cant wait to make these, thankyou
Biscuit + chocolate = love
Whoa! There’s some serious deliciousness going on here!
Thank God I do not have dark chocolate in the house. Good morning America, these look delicious!

Oh dear, I fear the diet’s just gone out the window, I need to make and eat these now!
I cannot make these. If I make these, I will eat every single on of them in record time. And my hips will hate me and protest their hate by doubling in size. I can’t.
These look like scones and cookies in one mouthful. Yum. Definitely want this for breakfast with milk :)
OK these look fabulous!
What a good recipe for the sleepover crowd – the teens should love these! Can’t wait to give it a try!
Oh Yes Please!!! A dozen for me pleeeease :)

These look amazing. The baby is addicted to chocolate and would love these. (The baby is 3 before you get “bad mom” vibes lol). I wonder what they would taste like with a little bit of peanut butter, or biscoff spead sprinkled in there….yumm ;). I love this website.
Mmm…these would make a great breakfast OR dessert! Yum!
great, now I am craving this and no where near a kitchen!
That might be even better with orange butter or orange zest mixed with the chocolate and butter. Yup, I love chocolate and orange together!
Oh wow, these look absolutely fantastic! What I would give to have one right now!
ughhhh, I should never come here when I’m hungry. But do I ever learn? NOPE.
Mmm! Thank you ;) I make biscuits several mornings a week; why have I never thought to add chocolate???
My kids loved to make these
Amazing! These are added to my must bake list.
