Dining Out Dessert

Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce

Here’s a little something I think you guys will like. It’s a Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce. I don’t know what made me think about this dessert, because I’ve only had it once. It was several years ago… maybe even eight. I was eating out at Applebee’s with my family and we decided to get dessert. Now, I eat out kind of often, but desserts are usually saved for celebrations. Birthdays and such. And, when I do get one, it’s usually the most chocolate thing on the menu and it never contains nuts. But on that day, it wasn’t my celebration. It was my uncle’s and I agreed to split this non-chocolate, nut-filled dessert – the whole while thinking about how much better the chocolate would be. Well, I was wrong. Way wrong. This might have even been the best thing I had ever tasted. (up until that point, anyway.)

So, if you’ve never been to Applebee’s and you’ve never tasted the Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce, that’s okay. Because, you’re in luck. I found a recipe from The Secret Recipe Blog that’s as close to the original as I remember it.

I promise you’ll like it.

Here’s the recipe.

Here are the ingredients for the blondies.

Blondie Ingredients

Mix it all up…

Blondie Batter

And, spread it all out in a greased and floured 8 or 9 inch square pan. (I used the 8 inch)

When the blondies are almost done, mix up your maple butter sauce. Here’s what you’ll need.

Maple Butter Sauce Ingredients

When the brownies are done, cool for a few minutes. Cut and serve while they are still warm.

Walnut Blondies

Put one, or two, or six on a plate. Pile on some vanilla ice cream and slowly pour the warm maple butter sauce over everything. Top with any extra walnuts.

Maple Butter Sauce

OMG!!!!!

Now, if you don’t have any ice cream in the house, don’t let that stop you from making this.

Actually, if one were to make just the blondies and the maple butter sauce, one might even want to cut up small pieces of the blondie and use the maple butter sauce as a dip. One might even end up dunking the whole thing in the sauce and getting maple butter all over their fingers that they then had to force themselves to lick off. However, I don’t know anyone like that.

Again, here’s the recipe.

And, now for a giveaway…

  1. Don Pablo’s Sopapillas! Puffy fried pastries with brandy butter sauce and powdered sugar… mmmmm! Sooo great!

  2. My all time favorite dine-out dessert is Sidney’s Sinful Sundae from Outback Steakhouse. This thing is by far the most delectable slice of heaven I’ve ever had while dining out. Depending on how much of a regular you are at a certain store, they’ll pile on a few extra strawberries. Ice cream, toasted coconut, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and fresh strawberry(ies)…you just can’t beat that in the hot Arizona summers.

  3. Pavlova with passionfruit drizzled on top. Mmmm!

  4. If we get dessert at a restaurant the one I crave is the one just gave us the recipe for… LOVE that maple butter… if I am just grabbing a quick dessert I love Loard’s lemon chiffon ice cream, creamy, not too tart… seriously to die for, and if it is served with my grandma-in-laws homemade madelaines then all the better.

  5. This is pretty unoriginal, but I love the chocolate molten cake from Chili’s! MMM, I could go for some of that now. :)

  6. Deep fried bananas!! Ohhh the heavenly goodness of Thai dessert!! Anytime my friends and I are going out, I try to convince to head over to a Thai restaurant, just so I can have the deep fried bananas!

  19. Easy! Creme Brulee. Oh, be still my heart.

  20. The best dessert I’ve ever paid for is the Pizza Cookie at a Phoenix restaurant called Oregano’s.

It’s so good that it’s the ONLY dessert on the menu at all 8 locations!

Here’s how it’s described on the menu: “A 1/2 pound of Chocolate Chip, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, or Peanut Butter Chocolate cookie dough, slightly baked in a 6-inch pizza pan then topped with 3 scoops of vanilla bean ice cream.”

And that’s exactly it. Heated just enough so that it no longer tastes raw, but still gooey enough to slip right off your spoon! I’m salivating just thinking about it!

I’ve had desserts like it in Seattle, Dallas and Los Angeles, and none of them were even NEARLY as good!

And man, do I love contests!
    hippopotassium@hotmail.com (just in case) ;)

  21. The Pumpkin Cheesecake served at the Olive Garden durning the month of November is the best cheesecake ever. I have a tradition with a sister to meet, no matter where we live, and enjoy this dessert together!

  22. Always…a plain, perfect New York Style cheesecake. No need for snickers/milky way/apple pie/whatever is in your pantry/ sort of fluff. Just cheesecake. I guess I’m a purist.

  23. My all time favorite eating-out dessert is the Godiva’s chocolate cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory. It is so chocolaty and rich that I usually can’t finish it in one sitting. So I bring half of it home and enjoy it a second time!

    rachelsugden@gmail.com

  24. I am a sucker for the desert ravioli at the Macaroni Grill (although I haven’t been able to go in awhile :( ). I’ve heard recently it’s one of the worst things you can eat when you dine out but I LOVE it. It’s like a snickers rolled into fried pastry. Yummo!

  38. Goodness…that looks delish! My favorite desert is the Brookie from Rafferty’s. Like you and the Blondie, there’s some stuff in it that I don’t really care for,(chocolate brownie with nuts and coconut…I hate nuts and coconut) but there’s something about the way that it’s just barely cooked long enough, with a huge scoop of ice cream on top and warm chocolate syrup drizzled all over it that makes it the best thing I’ve ever tasted! Yum.

    candi2001@hotmail.com

  39. That looks delicious!

My favorite dessert is The Cookie Monster from Cheddars. A homemade chocolate chip cookie cooked in a skillet, topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, chopped nuts and a cherry. YUM! The closest Cheddars is 3 hours from me and I’ll be visiting it in May…I can’t wait!

I loved strawberry cheesecake from Cheesecake factory when i was visiting SF. unfortunately, i dont live there :)

  60. definitely cheesecake factory cheesecake!! husband and I go there just for dessert and even though we can’t each finish a piece by ourselves, we always get 2…so we can take some home…yummy

  61. You hit the nail on the head with this one. I don’t know what posessed me to try it at applebee’s one time, but now I have to get it anytime we eat there. Good thing for my waistline we don’t make it to that end of the city too often! Anyway, thank you. I will definitely be saving this one to try sometime.

  62. Mmmm…I love desserts! My favorite that I’ve ever had was a deep dark French chocolate mousse from a little shop in London…but since I can’t get that everyday, I guess I will weigh in with a dessert you can get at Javier’s a chain out Meixcan restaurants here in Utah. The dessert is a cinnamon tortilla chip pile with cinnamon vanilla sauce and ice cream. Oh it is YUMMY!!!

    donkehpoo@gmail.com

  68. lemon or lime pie or tart. Sometimes its creme brulee, but after the last “chemical” tasting one, I’m quite leary about ordering it again.
    ~carissa

  69. I love the “Chocolate Thunder” from Outback Steakhouse. It may just be a plain old brownie sundae but it makes me happy! I am smiling now just thinking about it. How can you not LOVE a warm brownie, ice cream, hot fudge and REAL whipped cream. YUM!!!!! I want one now.

  70. Oh, how delicious.

My favorite dining out dessert? I used to drive half an hour out of the way to get a slush puppy. Extra syrup. Occasionally, same place, I’d get vanilla custard soft serve wish marshmallow sauce and caramel. From a roadside stand in Ridgefield, CT, I don’t think it has a name.

  71. The best dessert ever is my grandmother’s home-made strawberry cobbler…but, in a pinch, I’ll settle for the Chocolate Stampede at Longhorn’s: Two peaks of chocolate cake packed with six (yes, six) types of chocolate including chocolate mousse, fudge icing and chocolate shavings. Served with vanilla bean ice cream, fudge sauce and whipped cream. Yum!!!

  72. Well in second place is the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake at Chilis…which I’ve eaten a whole one easily. But the custard place called Sheridans is definitely first pick. You get to create your own concretes, which are custard creations with your favorite toppings. Yum!

  73. That would have to be the Baileys Shake at Red Robin. Yummmm.

  74. i don’t usually order dessert at a restaurant but i will order the tiramisu from Olive Garden everytime! heaven on my spoon.
    yum yum yum

  75. I’m not sure I can decide. Probably the bread pudding from Harvest (in St Louis).

    So good!

    My address is sshuman@jhsph.edu

  83. I heart the pizookie at B.J.’s in California…warm cookie with ice cream! Heaven!

  84. Mine has to be the Chocolate Lava Cake from Fleming’s Steakhouse. However, a close second is just a simple recipe that we make at our house from Kraft Foods called Dark Molten Lava Cake. YUMMY! Nothing like a hot cake with melted chocolate and ice cream to go with!

    mamadriggs@yahoo.com

  85. BJ’s Brewhouse Pizookie! Half Oreo and Half Chocolate Chip is the best!

  86. My favorite dessert is unfortunately an extinct one (as far as I know that is). When I was young, my family would eat out at a place called Georgio’s in Hutchinson, Kansas. They had the best Italian Cream cake (I think this was the name). It was some sort of white cake with walnuts and an absolutely fabulous frosting. I’ve never found anything like it again, but everytime we went there, we’d ask to see the desserts all the while knowing I’d pick the Italian cake. I’m 22 now, and I think I might have been 10 the last time I had it…sigh…
    sam_c_04@hotmail.com

  87. Fried Ice Cream at Macayo’s, although my mom makes a similar dessert that’s even better!

  88. I have 2….

  91. You are so right about AppleBee’s Blondies. They have been a fave of mine and my husbands for a long long time.
As far as my favorite Dine Out Dessert goes…that is a tough one. It would be a toss up between the caramel pie at O’Charley’s and the Tiramisu at Olive Garden. Those are my two faves that I can think of right now.

  92. I love chocolate fondue from the Melting Pot. We only go there for special occasions and it is such a fun way to end the meal!

  96. My most memorable dessert was at a little restaurant here in Phoenix called “Convivo’s”. My sister had a surprise 40th party there for me a few years ago, and was friends with the Chef. Special for me he made a rustic apple tart with the most fabulous flaky pate brise, with homemade caramel sauce drizzled on top, which was then sprinkled with Gorgonzola cheese. It was an absolutely to die for combination that I have never forgotten. I am craving it SO badly now! ednascafe at gmail dot com

  97. Definitely PF Chang’s Banana Spring Rolls with Coconut ice cream. SO delicious!

  98. I would have to say either a pazooki from BJ’s ( I’m a sucker for chocolate chip cookies) or the strawberry shortcake from Cheesecake factory… mmmmm

  99. Bread Pudding at a little place called Kahoots. It’s delish.

  100. Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion (Newport Beach, CA) has the BEST Chocolate Souffle. You have to make sure you order it at the beginning of the meal. They serve it with a Whipped Cream (we have to get it with Vanilla Bean ice cream because my husband is allergic to alcohol and the cream has some sort of liquor in it). It is AMAZING!

  101. I go in phases with my favorite desserts, currently, I'm in love with Tres Leches from Cafe Rio. They are fantastic!! If I had to pick a 2nd? Fondue at the melting pot – Yin Yang w/white & milk chocolate.

    Heaven. On. Earth.

But, we have a family owned icecream shop here in Salt Lake City, called Leatherby’s and they have THE best caramel I have ever tasted. I don’t even think of ordering the hot fudge there – I get the caramel sauce over vanilla icecream every time. By the way, my sister introduced me to your blog. She said something like, “It’s so beautiful it will make you cry.” : )

  111. I love carrot cake cheesecake from the cheesecake factory…. yummmm!

  112. Olive Garden Chocolate Lasagna, they don’t make it anymore but it was GOOD!

Anyways, I tasted the same type sauce on my son’s ice cream sundae at Macaroni Grille the other night and it transported me to our honeymoon. Yum!

  116. My absolute favorite has vanished from menus…

However, I read your blog ALL the time, you’re actually on my blog roll as well :) Anyway, I’ve been looking for a recipe close to the Applebee’s Blondie and secretly wishing you had the recipe…and looky here! I’m so excited to try this!

Ok, I’m rambling (only because I’m excited-lol), my fav dine out desert would have to be the White Chocolate Macadamia Blondie Cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory…LOVE IT! So, do you have a recipe for that? hehe

  125. I love dessert and like you I usually go for the most chocolate thing on the menu! But there is this little italin/pizza place around where I live with the best caramel cake ever!! They always run out so I make sure and order that FIRST before my meal!!

  126. I really loved the Mexican fried ice cream from ChiChi’s (which sadly does not exist anymore).

  127. Boston Cream Pie is one of my favs from Marie Calendars. But mainly anything chocolatey anywhere will do!

  138. Soft ice cream. Or frozen yogurt, or custard, or anything that’s cold and creamy and spirally. Doesn’t matter where it’s from, and I’m flexible about flavor, but it has to be in a cone. Of course, as with all things, it’s best appreciated at the Jersey Shore.

  139. Banana spring rolls from P.F. Changs — heavenly!!!

  140. I LOVE the Cookie Monster at Cheddars. YUM! And the Fresh Banana Cream Cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory! YUM again!

  141. Ohhhh! I, like you, only get desserts on special occasions, but I absolutely LOVE the molten chocolate cake from Chilis. MMMmmmmmmmm…..

    zimblydoo@gmail.com

  142. My favorite dessert is a brownie and vanilla ice cream treat from Tin Star. Sooooo yummy! (And huge! Bonus!)

  144. I think I would have to say… Montana’s deep fried cheesecake. :D

  145. Dang! Somebody chose the Great Wall of Chocolate cake from PF Chang’s already. That is by far, the BEST Dining Out Dessert if you’re going for chocolate. Once you’ve had this, other chocolate cakes don’t compare.

  146. Chris’ Outrageous Chocolate Cake from Cheesecake Factory. “Layers of Moist Chocolate Cake, Chewy Brownie, Toasted Coconut Pecan Filling and Creamy Chocolate Chip Coconut Cheesecake.” Sweet mother it’s delicious. BUT, ever since I found out it’s 1,380 calories (!!!) I haven’t ordered it. Maybe one day I will again….and split it with 5 other people. lcsiojo AT usfca DOT edu.

  147. Yummmy! Anything with cinnamon, apples, and caramel! The best I’ve had so far is a local restaurants’ version of a “Poor Boy’s” Bread Pudding. Unbelievably rich and decadent, topped with aged cheddar cheese! Hello delicious!

  148. Griff’s in Wilson, NC, a locally owned and operated place, used to serve a dessert called The Chocolate Bomb. Five layers of chocolate: creamy pudding, a gooey nutty brownie, homemade hot fudge sauce, a generous scoop of chocolate ice cream, the more hot fudge. Topped with real whipped cream and a cherry (of course). It was supposed to serve two, but I ate the whole thing myself and omg it was pure chocolate heaven. I wonder if it’s still on the menu.

  149. Oh Lordy! I’ve been a huge fan of the blondie at Applebees for YEARS! This recipe is so dangerous in my hands…. DROOL!!!!

The other chain restaurant desert I love is the brownie at TGI Friday’s. SO GOOD! It ranks right up there with Ina Garten’s Outrageous Brownie (which is totally outrageous!).

  150. I love tres leches cake from Costa Vida, a fresh-mex restaurant. Yum.

  151. The cheesecake with raspberry sauce and hazelnuts from Buca di Beppo. It’s real Italian cheesecake with ricotta. Best. Dessert. Ever.

  168. I went to Eddie Merlot’s the other night and my husband and I split the S’mores and hot chocolate dessert. It was fantastic! There was a really chocolatey cake slice topped with toasted marshmallows and it had a trail of graham cracker crumbs along with a mini cup of hot chocolate… YUM!!! I also love the fried banana dessert thing at PF Changs. jaholloway1124@gmail.com

  169. I’m a big fan of the Great Wall of Chocolate Cake PF Chang’s. It’s like 5 layers of chocolate cake with raspberry filling in between the layers, chocolate frosting on the outside with mini chocolate chips, drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. holy. wow.

  170. the Olive Garden used to have this wonderful thing called the “berry crostada.” it was a golden pastry with goopy hot berry goodness inside, served with vanilla ice cream. mmmmmmmmmm…

  172. I love the little chocolate mousse shots out at applebee’s…oh they are soo good!

  175. Churros from Carolina’s, a small-chain Mexican restaurant in Sacramento. Oh how I miss good Mexican food!

  176. Hmmm …. have to say a similar dish to what you are describing at a restaurant called The Office. I think they are just a chain in NJ. Came out on a sizzling hotplate and was just divine.

Thanks for this great giveaway and good luck everyone!

  177. The key lime pie at Cactus Club. It’s a creamy pie filling (no jelly!) on a graham cracker crust, with whipped cream (plain, no sugar added, which is soooooo good) and then the best part: fresh lime zest and some powdered sugar sprinkled over the plate.

    Deeeee-lish. Had it yesterday! :)

  178. For a Quick treat I love Dairy Queen’s Strawberry Shortcake (~~)Julie

    heat_herjeanne@yahoo.com

  188. Key Lime pie from pretty much anywhere.

  189. My favorite is cannoli from my local mom & pop Italian restaurant. They have the shells made up, but they pipe in the filling until you order it so the shell stays crispy. Yum yum yum.

  196. I love NY style Cheesecake from anywhere! Heaven!

  197. My favorite has to be the apple crisp at applebee’s. I don’t know what it is about that, but I love it…. However, now that I like to bake, I make and eat my own desserts now, all of which are superior to that apple crisp! haha
    JulesAF@gmail.com

  198. I know this is sort of passe, but bananas foster is my favorite dessert when I’m out at some stodgy old steak house. I mean, bananas, caramel, ice cream, a mix of hot and cold?? It’s wonderful.
