Remember a couple of weeks ago when I was in LA for some fun Emmy events?
Well, I had a little free time and at the last minute I tweeted my friend Jenny of Picky Palate. We met about a year ago at a blogging event and hit it off right away. I remembered she lives in California, so I took a chance and crossed my fingers that she could rearrange her day and spend it in LA with me. Luckily for me, she could.
Before I show you all the yummy stuff we ate, I want to take a minute to reflect.
You see, before I ever started blogging, I remember hearing about people that blogged. I thought why in the world would anyone do that. Why would anyone waste their time sitting in front of their computer … blogging. Especially, when they could be out doing something. Something more fun. That’s stupid. I would never waste my time.
Nope. Not me. Not gonna blog. And definitely not going to blog for almost three years.
But I have to tell you now, as a blogger, attached to my computer, I’ve done more things and met more people than I ever would have otherwise.
People like Jenny and the Pioneer Woman and Tartelette and Steamy Kitchen that I’ve been so happy to spend time with. And people that I may have met briefly but still made a big impact on me … and of course all you that I feel connected with everyday … so many adventures that have truly made the last few years some of the best ones of my life. If I had never decided to post that first photo… on my blog, none of this would have happened. None of it.
Never say never I guess. You don’t know what you’ll be missing out on.
Anyway… enough gushy stuff… back to Jenny.
Jenny drove in to LA Friday afternoon for lunch and we spent time visiting a few places before I went to the Emmy Performers Nominee Reception for Duncan Hines.
First stop… Joan’s on Third. Neither of us had ever been there before, but now we both can’t wait to go back. It’s my new favorite place.
We had cute little bullet sandwiches with prosciutto and apricot glaze. Oh so simple, but oh so fantastic.
Then we had a little dessert.
Just a little.
There were two of us. Come on. It’s not that much.
Snickerdoodle cake, Cloud cupcake, macarons and more.
FYI… I guess you can see why I wanted to make Hi Hats. Looking at these photos, though… I want mine this high next time.
And … like bloggers, do. The photos come first …
… and during. I’m pretty sure people around us thought we were weirdos.
But that’s okay. We were having a blast.
Macarons. Wow. These were much better than my first solo attempt. I’ll have to try them again.
P.S. Jenny – You’re so perty!
After all those sweets, we needed a little milk.
Milk was just down the street.
This was a cute little shop full of ice cream, cookies, ice cream sandwiches, cake and cupcakes, too.
We went for an assortment of frozen treats.
Our own little ice cream party.
Butterscotch, blueberry, oreo, black and white. All delicious.
When we finished, we decided it was time for dessert. ; )
So off to Scoops for some gelato.
I had caramel brown bread gelato and Jim beam ricotta gelato. I was too consumed to remember what Jenny had, but it was a great way to top off the day.
After we satisfied our sweet tooth, we headed back to the hotel.
Jenny flipped through a copy of the book while I started to get ready for the Emmy party. By the way, the room Duncan Hines put me up in was super swanky. It was covered in mirrors and sliding doors. Here’s a few pics if you’re interested.
The next day, was all free. So I rented a car and met Jenny in her neck of the woods.
And as luck would have it, there was a huge Food Truck Festival going on that Saturday.
Way cool. Fifty plus food trucks all in one location.
Our first truck stop was World Fare.
See these. They’re called Bunny Chows – bread filled with braised short rib, chicken curry, barbeque or vegetarian chili. And they were amazing. And cute to boot.
Also a winner was the blueberry lemonade. Refreshing. Track down this truck and try it.
But the absolute best thing we ate all day was this. It doesn’t look like a lot, but let me tell you… spectacular.
It’s a butterscotch bread pudding and I would get it again in a heartbeat.
Here’s a slideshow of some of the other food trucks at the event.
Jenny – I had the most fun with you in LA. I can’t wait to do it again sometime.
P.S. – Have a favorite food truck worth tracking down? Do tell.
P.S.S. – So glad I started blogging.
I am interested in writing a guest post for your blog. Are you currently accepting guest posts?

Currently dribbling all over my keyboard… all that food looks incredible!
Yum! This looks like an awesome trip! I love Joan’s on Third- I get the fish and veggies to offset the desserts. You CANT get just one!
The food trucks look incredible!!
I agree, so glad I started blogging. If not, I would never have gotten to meet you and Jaden and so many other wonderful food bloggers. :)
Um, diabetic coma?
Hey, I can’t stop thinking about the yummiest food truck evah! It’s in University Village in Seattle, WA. Only it’s not there all the time. Which is a bummer for me because I live 80 minutes away. Don’t like to make that drive without making sure about it.
Anyhoo…they only serve one dish, two ways. It’s a little thai tasting pork sandwich. Spicy or regular. AND, the best part is the marinated crunchy spicy super duper delicious cabbage slaw on the side. Not creamy, but a lovely asian sweet chili sauce instead. Sounds like just a side, but nooooo. It’s delicious. Also served with this is a side of veggie chips…potato, zucchini, and beet. Num!
Oh, to top it off is a choice of ginger lemonade or passionfruit lemonade. Both are amazingly refreshing and not too sweet.
It was heaven.
oh my goodness. Yummy cake, my fav. and you didn’t invite me. Sigh. lol
i’m really glad you started blogging, too. Then i can get to see your wonderful food adventures and lovely baking creations. I hope you’ll always continue blogging!
I’m pretty sure I need to plan a trip to Milk immediately. Those treats look so delicious!
scoops is my favorite!
Milk is one of the things I miss most about LA! I used to live frighteningly close. (Like, keep me away from that place or I am going to need an intervention close.) So much good food in the West Hollywood area! How do Angelenos stay so thin?!
OMG – love the milk pic…but I will never pass up a macaron.
Looks like you two had so much fun! Major sugar shock..whoo, hoo! You and Jenny have such awesome blogs and I hope to join you one day.
If you’re ever in Philly look for Buttercream, the cupcake lady. I adore her. Just don’t get tricked by the impostor who tells people she sold him the business. His cupcakes are nowhere near as amazing.
wow, way to live it up for the day!! and another wow for duncan hines, they sure know how to treat a girl!!!
Oh, Bakerella. You are a woman after my own heart! I heart desserts like you! I’m in So. Cal..now I must take a trip to Santa Monica for my own taste test!
My favorite food truck is The Pizza Rig out of Syracuse. Awesome woodfire pizza!
I met Jenny at CampBlogAway last weekend!! She is the nicest woman!! It looks like you had a great couple of days!
You looked soo cute in front of the “Nom Nom” truck!
Wow. I can’t believe Joan’s On Third allowed you to take these pictures. They’re pretty high and mighty when it comes to shots of their food…
I asked to take pictures there last month and I was quickly told that no pictures were allowed of their food.
For great cupcakes in LA, SusieCakes is where it’s at.
SOOO, which of you would like to be MY new BFF?! :)
next time tweet me and I’ll come from Utah cause I love both of you, but here’s what I really want to know: How do food bloggers like you and Jenny stay so thin? I don’t get it, you should both be huge but you’re so not! Probably you just take a few bites, right?
oh my goodness, how werent you sick to your stomach after eating all that?! i would throw up! but it looks ohhhhh so good!
MILK is one of my absolute favorite places here in L.A. !
love the picture of the diet coke next to the desserts!
I so enjoy following your blog and thought I would tell you that bunny chows originate from South Africa. Here we cut a loaf of bread in half, scoop out the middle of the loaf so that there is only the crust left, then fill it with various kinds of curry. Then you put the scooped out bread on top and eat with sambals (chopped tomato, onion and chillies if you want it hot) and chutney.
awwww! This post made me remember the fun times I had with you two last year at the General Mills kitchens! We definitely have to meet up again soon…missed you both at this year’s trip! So excited for you and your book and your Betty Crocker experience!! (((hugs)))
Boy – you really took the bullet for the rest of us – LOL – The picts made me so want to go, but apparently, I was home, making a G.I. Joe Birthday Cake with a side order of Cake Pops (first attempt – practicing for Halloween) – Boughty our book last week and Love It! Love It! Love It!
I say Kudos to Bloggers – especially when dreams beyond your wildest imaginings come true! Congrats on your Success (And, just to note – I don’t just let any cookbook on my counter!!!)
this looks like the most delicious day ever
Lol…one of the pics has all the desserts plus a diet coke. Great pics of you and Jenny
Oh, yes jenny is so purty :) xo
Jenny & I had the most lovely chat about you yesterday. She told me all about the wonderful time you gals spent together. We were in the car going back & forth from the OC to LA, so there was lots of time to catch up on fun events. I had no idea you had this post up….just stopped by to see what you had going on. Your trip to SoCal looks like it was a blast. I can’t wait to see your book. Hopefully next time you are out this way I could have the opportunity to meet you. Jenny & I will be at BlogHer Food—-you too??
I love Jenny’s earrings….there so purty
Didn’t know where else to post this but on the book tour, Chicago but not Milwaukee, boo. We would love to see you north of the border, too. Can’t wait to buy the book!
One of the first posts on my blog was Never say Never. It wasnt about blogging it was just about never saying never…which I found can make me eat my tennis shoes. I agree 100% I have had more fun in the 11months since I started bloggin than…well I have ever had…almost. Looking forward to Blogher in a couple weeks! Wahooo!
Ooooh i’m so jealous! I’ve always wanted to just have a day where I eat only desserts! Sounds like too much fun!
I love this! You girls look so stunning and my gosh the treats you had look fantastic! Maria x
It all looks so yummy, but didn’t you gals have tummy aches after all that?! :o)
Wow, you girls are fantastic! And nice to know that I’m not the only ‘geek’ who takes pix of food all the time :-D
And please don’t stop blogging, you’re doing great!
I made some high hat cupcakes and I have to say they are SO VERY TASTY! Oh my word, we love them! I passed some out to appreciative neighbors and I am already thinking about making more of them. Yum Yum Yum! (I used box cake mix for the cupcakes but made the real recipe for the tops.)
I’m so glad you started blogging too =D The ice cream trucks over here in Germany are to die for. well all ice cream over here really but we are lucky to have our own ice cream truck come right to our house in the summer. Perfect way to end the day if i do say so myself!
high calorie cupcake and diet coke -priceless !
Looks like such sweet day ;) Now I know how you guys can eat all that gooness and not gain a pound! It’s the diet Coke! LOL

Oh My Gosh!! How did you two not E X P L O D E ;)-
I’m imagining the sugar high…. ahhh, and so worth it. ‘-)
Well, I just drooled all over my keyboard. I don’t know if it would be possible for me to select just one of those desserts to try…I want them all! Especially that black and white cookie ice cream sandwich…
Bakerella + Picky Palate + desserts = perfect day! :)
wow! those desserts look stellar!
Share a link to your first blog post or first picture you posted… that’s a fun story you shared. I’m trying to figure out what my passion is to blog about. I’m currently in the “not going to blog” phase.
Sooooo fun! I have a super fun food truck. Slidn’ Thru. It’s a slider truck here in Las Vegas. DELISH!!
Kisses from the WhipperChicks
These pictures are beautiful! Looks like so much fun. I think I’m going to go out and buy a sweet treat right now!
LOL! I love the pics of dessert with the diet coke can in the pic :) Everything looks yummy!!!
These are some of my favorite posts from you…your city sweets tours. I travel a lot for work, and I am always on the look-out for great surprises. I have quite the sweet tooth, so you give me lots of advice on where to look first! I love how you didn’t get enough sweets at the first place and had to “wash it down” with milk, then gelato. My type of gals!
Wow. Nice hotel room!
I’m so glad you’re blogging :) I love seeing the little things you make, and feeling inspired!
Um… snickerdoodle cake? I think I need this in my life!
I don’t have a favorite food truck, but I do have a couple really nice ice cream places (and if I win the lotto, I will probably open up my own ice cream places). Yum!
That looks incredible! :) So is that a macaron ice cream sandwich??
I need to stop reading your blog while at work….I think I drooled all over my keyboard.
It almost makes me want to take up blogging!
Your room looked SOOOOOO HOITY-TOITY!
Loved the high top cupcake and the Bunny Chows looked sooo yummy.
That hotel room looked fabulous!! Loved your black ruffled shirt too! :)
There is a super pulled pork truck in Seattle…called Minimus Maximus, it is a Stainless Steel bus that looks like a pig. They have pulled pork sandwiches, slaw and Iced Tea (there are just 2 types of each, but super good-either medium or hot).
Also, in NYC, there is a Waffle Truck called Wafels & Dinges…it moves around each day and they have fabulous Savory and Sweet waffles!
Looks like a great trip…now I know where to go next time I am in LA!
We just started getting into following those trucks. We’ve only tried the famous Kogi truck which is OKAY and Get Shaved Ice which is the BEEEEEST shaved ice EVER!! We’re looking forward to going to Long Beach’s Food Fest in October…mmmmmm!!
Thanks for blogging Girl!!! I absolutely love reading your adventures, looking at your pictures and trying out all of your yummy things!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you decide to blog and share your wonderfulness with others!!! :)
P.S. -if you are ever in Philadelphia, you should definitely track down the falafel truck on 20th and Market! It is the best food truck EVER!! Seriously!!
i’m so glad u blog bakerella, u’re such an inspiration!
Finally, someone who can eat like me! You ladies did the town right! I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves thoroughly and being a Southern Californian I’ll be paying these places a visit for sure!! :)
Everything looks sensational. I would have eaten EVERYTHING! I love the bread filled with short ribs. Looks sooo YUMM! And all the desserts ofcourse!
Holy schnickeys that was your hotel room!?!??! Love your blog, my friends and I curse you almost daily because of all of the wonderful yummy treats you force us to make :)
I stumbled upon your blog a couple months ago. I’ve been enjoying reading about your journeys & learning about how to make cakepops. Thank you for changing your mind & starting blogging!
Looks like you had a great time and some great food!
I just got diabetes from looking at all the sweets you ate. :)
hi there! i love love love your blog and all your wonderful posts, but i have one question..do you eat anything healthy? i mean, you look in good health, don’t get me wrong! but so far we’ve only read about all your meals consisting of sugar butter cream and flour ;P what’s your secret!
wow! gorgeous food pics. Looks like LA has tons of great food.

Oh my goodness, you guys had some delicious little bites! I’m glad you started blogging too.
I love eating dessert, but how did y’all eat that much dessert? It all looks good though!
We’re ALL so glad you started blogging.

I was at the OC foodie fest! Loved it!!
I had to drop my daughter off at college first…so I know missed out on a chance of even seeing you there!
Our favorite that day was Dos Chinos and The Vizzi truck…but the Red Velvet Pancake bites @the Buttermilk truck were yummy!!
Everything looks irresistible, but I’m getting a tummy ache just looking at it! SO MUCH FOOD! What a dilemma.
Looks like you all had a blast together! All of those desserts look amazing, especially the ice cream from MILK! What a great way to spend a few days!
Does it have to be a truck? How about an airstream? http://www.heycupcake.com
I love that you started blogging too! And I can’t wait to hit LA and check out those places… :)
MadeYouLook Natural Skincare
Kewl story – enjoyed it….luv that our CA “raunch” wagons are actually haute cuisine carriages!
I officially want to try these places.
i know the best thai truck ever but it is in hawaii!!
I’ve had so much fun following your blog, I’ve decided to start my own! Those desserts look amazing hope someday I’ll get out that way and get to try some of them!
I love that you both actually indulged and sampled everything!! It shows what normal non-bloggers do too :)
How fun is that?!?! Cool.
And Jenny is very perty.

Glad you had such a great time in LA!
You lucky pup! I would love to meet some of my bloggy friends!
Well I am very happy you decided to become a blogger and look where it has gotten you! It looks like you had a great time in LA! That Bunny Chow thing looks yummy and cute!
Awesome, I follow Picky Palate and it’s so funny to know 2 of my favorite bloggers are also friendsies! I’m also in SoCal (city of Orange) and I’m so glad you enjoyed your taste of California, we are definitely proud of our food trucks down here. Sure, New York may have started it, but we have perfected it. :P My favorite right now is Piaggio on Wheels, also Calbi is delicious! I wish I could’ve gone to the Foodie Fest, it looks like a blast and a half.
omg that is so cool that you two are friends! jenny was the very first food blogger i stumbled upon. .. literally! this post really makes me excited to see the food blogger community up close! very cool. ;) PS im dying to know how amazing that black and white ice cream cookie was! it looks amazing! *drool*
11.20pm here: Thank you! You don’t even know how much!!! I am so glad I’ve started reading Cake Wrecks and their Sunday Sweets… because that’s how I found out about your awesome blog!
You brightened my spring, litterally! I was improving my baking skills on some French classics (for I am French ;) ) as a means of seeing la vie en rose and you gave me some goals (Cheesecake bars are my next, or pillow cookies, or…or..!)!
So glad to see how many great people you meet via blogging! Happy for you!
I was already a teeny bit jealous of the Cake Art Party Store, I was longing to find a place like the Lovely Confection Bakery, to go to California let alone.. now you planted in my brain the idea of the Milk Shop….errrr….I ‘m coming!
Thanks for sharing! Keep enjoying this positive whirl of sweetness you got yourself into :)
I need to start blogging…lol
I still can’t believe I missed you and Jenny by minutes at the OC Foodie Fest, so many awesome food trucks! Glad you all were able to get in after all!! And I completely agree with you, blogging opens up a whole new world of people and friends and events. And its way more than just behind the computer!! My calendar is packed full! Looking forward to (hopefully) meeting you in SF in Oct?? I’m flying up with Jenny!
Jenny is the cutest and sweetest blogger I know! :) Loved all your pics! Totally wishing I had another Snickers Cake from Joan’s right now! :)
You and Jenny in the same place! I would love it!!!!
WOW. So much food. The food truck thing looks very cool! I remember food trucks in Philly when I was there during the summer, but they were not nearly as fancy. I am increasingly jealous of your life. Amazing how much can change because of one simple decision.
My name (as you can see) is also Jenny, and for a second when I saw at the top of the post, I thought, wow, did i when that cupcake charm thing?
Love your blog. That gelato looks so good, it’s my new favorite cold food.
Ta Bom Truck offers awesome Brazilian food and some attempts at fusion.
Highly recommend the Pastel, a Brazilian type of empanada, which is deep fried. Try the beef or cheese for a classic, or the banana for a surprising dessert.
Jenny is so sweet and I feel honored to have met her.
Hopefully I’ll get to meet you-I’m looking forward to your book signing at Costa Mesa :)
I’ll be seeing Jenny tomorrow and love her energy.
I love your array of sweets, my kind of day.
Wow – look at all those yummy goodies!
Ever heard of Grill em all? In LA. They won gourmet burger food on The Great [Truck] Race on Food T.V! :) i definitely want to try them.
What a wonderful tale! I am just beginning to meet great people through blogging (like you!). Thanks SO much for sharing!
Wow… those desserts look yummy!
Have I seen Jenny on Food Network in a cooking competition? She looks so familiar.
I’m going to have to check out her blog.
I might be making this up, but I think bunny chow (or rabbit chow) is a South African thing. Maybe one of your readers can confirm. Looks like an amazing time. The ice cream stop was seriously tooo much yum.
All of those places you went to look amazing. Did you guys finish all the stuff you ate? Unbelievable! Those high hats – I thought I did mine high, but not t hat high! Glad to see you had a great time – I’m a big fan of both your blogs. Been following you both for years.
Jenny is one of my faves! Looks like a fabulous time!
That ice cream cone photo just might be my favorite ever. I love it.
Most importantly, if you had never started blogging then we would all not have met YOU. Then the world would be without cake pops and parties would not be fun, showers would be boring and our imaginations would not be running wild wondering what new creation you are coming up with. WE are so glad you started blogging!
Your trip looks absolutely wonderful! Lori L
ooo looks fantastic! I want to go. Immediately.
I wish we could do that weekend all over again. It really was a blast. I feel so lucky to have you as a friend :)
LOVED all of our adventures!
Love Picky Palate too! Awesome!
Oh, and I also giggled at how there were so many mirrors in your hotel room that you were in a lot of the pictures while taking the pictures! Great! :)
Looks like you had a fabulous time in LA. I want to go now after seeing all the yummy stuff you had to eat. Thank you for sharing it with us. LA here I come (well maybe one day)
Oh wow I love the logo for the Milk Shop! It’s definitely cute and unique :).
Everything looks UH-mazing! And what a lovely way to spend time with a friend :)
WOW!!!! Everything looks SOOOO delicious and your photos are fantastic!!!!
We are all pretty glad you staring blogging too – you are amazing! xo
I want all of those sweets, but I’ve got to say that those Bunny Chow’s have me starving.
You look like you had so much fun! I wish I could have been there.
Oh yum. YUM YUM YUM. JIM BEAM RICOTTA GELATO?? I mean, seriously, that alone is heaven. Let alone that massive hi hat. We’re just now seeing a few food trucks in my neck of the woods; the city coucil is having a dickens of a time working out what to do with them. It’ll be interesting, but I’m curious to see how it all pans out. Looks delish!
I have been wanting to try the Nom Nom Truck ever since I saw them in my hometown. Later I found out they were there for the Great American Food Truck Race.. so cool.
OMG that cupcake looks fantastic!
that looks like the best day ever! my sister and a friend recently spent a day from NYC eating only food trucks
Oh how awesome…I had heard that you were at the OC Foodie Fest because I was there, too. My girlfriend had texted me that she saw you and Jenny in the parking lot, but I was too busy eating and enjoying lots of treats from all those crazy trucks. I would have loved to accidently bumped into you two fantastic bloggers!! Here’s my blog post from the day – http://mrsregueiro.blogspot.com/2010/08/oc-foodie-fest-2010.html
What a fun-foodie eventful weekend you had here in the West Coast, and my fave food trucks include Kogi BBQ, Dogzilla, Piaggo, and Buttermilk Truck. I frequent Kogi BBQ at least once a week because they have rotating specials that are awesome.
I absolutely adore Jenny, and you are both so beautiful. I am so jealous of the food truck event. I need to get out to California and hunt a few down myself.
Thanks for sharing your trip!
you girls are SO GORGEOUS!!! i need to eat everything you guys tried :)
2 awesome bloggers in one place?! That looks like so much fun! I need to move closer to the West coast.
