Chocolate Swirl Biscuits

Chocolate swirl biscuits

Make these in the morning. You’ll be glad you did.

I was flipping through some of my cookbooks the other day and became mesmerized by a recipe for these biscuits from the book Deep Dark Chocolate. It’s filled with decadent recipes using dark chocolate. And with a title like that I would normally go for something all chocolate, super rich and fudgy. And I almost always pick a recipe accompanied by a photo. I’m very visual and like to see what I’m in for before hand. This one didn’t have a photo with it, but it still captivated me.

Swirled chocolate in a biscuit.

I’m all in.

These are pretty quick to make. You can have one in your tummy in no time.

Chopping Chocolate

Chopped dark chocolate.

Get it. Get it good.

Flour and butter

Beginnings of the biscuits.

Flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and buttah.

Working dough

Stir in some milk and the dough will start to come together.

Biscuit Dough

Flour your work surface and hands and form the sticky dough into a ball that you can then start to flatten and roll.

Rolling

Roll into a rectangular shape.

buttered

Spread some softened butter on top.

sugared

Sprinkle with a bit of sugar.

Dark Chocolate

And a little chocolate. Just a little. ; )

Rolling up biscuits

And roll it up all jelly roll style for chocolaty swirls.

Cutting biscuit dough

Then cut the roll into equal sections.

Biscuits about to bake

Like so. Maybe smaller chocolate chunks would have made my swirls more distinct.

That’s ok. I’m good with over-the-top chocolate.

Chocolate filled biscuits

Umm… yeah. Totally fine with that.

Eat them warm from the oven.

Chocolate Swirl Biscuits

Warm with a little melted butter. Yes, please.

Bitten

A yummy way to start the day.

Chocolate Swirl Biscuits

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup whole milk

Filling

  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped

  3. Using fingers or a pastry blender, work butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly.
  4. Add milk and stir with a fork until a loose, sticky dough forms.
  5. Turn dough out on a floured work surface. Flour your hands and form dough into a ball. Then gently knead it several times (8-10).
  6. Flour surface and hands more as necessary and use a floured rolling pin to roll the dough into a 13X11 inch rectangle. Position the long side of the dough in front of you.
  7. For the filling, spread softened butter over surface of dough. Sprinkle with sugar and cover with chopped chocolate.
  8. Roll the dough up in a jelly roll fashion and cut the roll into 10-12 equal sections.
  9. Place cut sections on parchment covered baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  10. Add topping if desired. Mix egg yolk and milk together and brush on tops. Then sprinkle with sugar.

  6. Oh my these look so yummy! If I have all of the ingredients then I will be making them tonight!

  7. Is the amount for the baking powder correct, 1 Tablespoon? That Sounds like a lot …

  8. I want to make these with cheese! You are always so inspiring, Bakerella!

  9. After I saw all the wonderful comments I decided I wanted to try them! I am going to try them tomorrow and I will get back as soon as I can!!!

P.S. I want to try them today but I am going out of town!!!

  10. Can I use mini chocolate chips instead of chopping the chocolate?

  11. Saw this recipe in one of the business news sites, I tried it right away, and SUPER! It’s so easy to make and YUMMY!!

  12. Loved these and so did all my family of 8. Very yummy. We added Peanut butter to them instead of butter when they got done very yummy.

  13. These biscuits are to die for! Tender, buttery, and chocolaty.. what’s not to love!! :) And, I was surprised how easy the dough was to work with by hand since I’m not a biscuit baker. Chocoholics, you will love these!!

  14. Hi bakerella, my name is Maria. This is an amazing recipe. 15. I know this recipy, we use to make it with my Great-Granma…but with brown sugar instead of chocolat…and we called it ”les pete de soeur” or if you prefer ” the nun farts” lol.lol.lol

  16. Gosh, these are good! I made these this morning and unfortunately I didn’t have much milk chocolate on hand. ????. But, there’s always a solution! I used a combination of milk chocolate and WHITE chocolate. Deliscious! I was wondering if there could be any other filling. The only one I’ve thought of is no butter on the dough and adding jam on top with a sprinkling of sugar. I haven’t tried these yet though!????

  17. oh my goodness such a beautiful dish. i will prepare it now and keep posting thanks a lot.

  18. Anything that gets chocolate into my belly first thing in the morning is A-OK by me! Will be making these soon :)

  19. I just made these last night…thanks Angie!! I actually have this book and everything that I’ve made out of it is crazy delicious!!

I had a question or two…did you use melting chocolate? How can they be a little more soft, not so crunchy…more like a fluffy and flakey dinner biscuit?

Although I didn’t hear any complaints, I’m harder on myself…a detail oriented perfectionist. hahahaha!

Thanks again Angie, love it here!!

  20. Made a batch last night and we couldn’t stop eating until they were all gone…they are simply delicious!! since I absolutely loooove dark chocolate, this is just the perfect treat for me :)

  21. My mother’s side of the family always made chocolate rolls and this is the closest recipe that I’ve found to their recipe. I will definitely have to try these. They use a bread and butter plate and cut a circle of dough. Then put the butter, chocolate and sugar in the center of the dough and turn the edges into the center. It oozes out the center and is fantastic. This should be just as good and a lot prettier. Thanks

  22. I made these, and they’re great! So easy and so delicious…thanks for sharing!

  23. Chocolate for breakfast!? Yes, please. One question… I find normal biscuits dry unless slathered in butter. Does the the chocolate take the place of the butter or is there a trick to keep them moist?

  24. I made these this afternoon with mini chocolate chips and chopped mini marshmallows, and they are divine! Thank you for such a fantastic recipe!

  25. I made these for a friend and I made a chocolate ganche to drizzle on the top. They were the talk of the office..

  26. I love the look of these – funny how biscuits in America are very different to what we call biscuits! But I certainly am going to try these out – thanks for this :)

  27. these just came out of the oven and I couldnt help myself and tasted them! delicious! thank you so much :) oh, and pretty easy to make!

  28. Definitely a delicious way to start your day…or end it with a midnight snack, too!!!

  29. Hummmmmmmmmmmmm I like it!!!

  31. Holy cow those look delish! I think I may try them tomorrow with some Bisquick mix and crushed chocolate chips!!!

  32. Just made a batch of these and had to come back to your site to comment. They are wonderful right out of the oven and not as tricky as I thought. I used chopped semi-sweet chips and 2% milk to avoid a trip to the store and they came out great. I rolled the dough out pretty thin and wrapped tightly for a million layers of melty goodness. Thanks Bakerella!!

  33. Wow! These look so delightful! I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I have to save the link though, so I can come back and actually read it. I haven’t had breakfast yet, I need to eat first before I read food stuff… the pictures made my tummy grumble.

This is my first visit. I’m always looking for new recipes to try and I love sweets and I do enjoy baking! I’m defintely inspired… and hungry! LoL.

    Cute blog and yummy post!

    Sarah

  36. These are so good! The boy friend ate five of them before I yelled at him to lay off! =D Went home and made them the very day you posted this! I used Milk Chocolate instead of Dark because I apparently ran out =P This one was added to my recipe book! Thanks so much for sharing! Can’t wait to see what you’ll post next! Your 14 layer cake, Key lime cream cake, pillow cookies, peanut butter cookies, and the cinnamon rolls “swirls” are also in my recipe book!
