Grocery item goes gourmet (part 2)

After making the Oreo Truffles last week, I thought I would try the recipe with Nutter Butters. I don’t have a classic Peanut Butter Ball Recipe, so I thought, what the heck. They came out pretty good. I think I like the Oreo Truffles a little better though. Mainly because the flavor is so distinct. With these, its just a good old tried and true peanut butter and chocolate combo. Just plain………!

  1. I used white chocolate to dip the balls. I loved the difference.

  2. I made these and dipped in white chocolate. I lice the difference.

  3. I made these as a bday gift and was a little underwhelmed. The Oreo Truffles left big (and sweet!) shoes to fill. The PB flavor was more muted than I expected. I’ve made white chocolate covered Nutty Butters several times before and they’ve always been a hit and a personal favorite. Maybe the cream cheese is to blame? Also, I did also experience “weeping” with these truffles. I too believe it was the oil since these are a PB based cookie. My suggestion would be to let the crushed cookies sit out on a paper towel for a spell (overnight?). Also, I think a small amount of powdered sugar (to taste) may help with the flavor when mixing the crumbs and cream cheese. In the future I’ll stick with Oreo Truffles and just dipping the Nutty Butters.

  4. These r wonderful. I’m always asked to make these for the holidays. Thanks for the best pb balls ever.

  5. Oh forgot to add making the Oreo ones for my son too!

  6. My son comes home from college for a visit and loves chocolate and peanut butter so I guess I will be making these to send back with him. This mom is going to be a hit with the new roomies! =)

  7. Y-U-M!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. adding crunchy pb in place of half the cream cheese definitely made these fabulous. My sister always makes the Oreo ones and I love them, but these rock.

  9. figured it out – chocolate almond bark. When I would goggle chocolate bark, what would come up is a home made chocolate type of bar.

  10. What is Chocolate bark? You list chocolate bark in your ingredient list.

  11. Why the “all but 5 cookies”???

  12. Bakerella I just simply love you !! I am 16 years old from Pakistan. You are totally an inspiration.I have tried almost dozen of your recipes and they went awesome.I love you.I wish I could meet you and hug you for real.Lots of love.kisses and hi five ! :*

  13. I just wanted to say these were a big hit this Christmas at my house, but I did change the recipe a little. I thought the dough mixture was a little bland, so I added about a cup of sugar to sweeten it up. Perfect!

  14. Would these be refrigerated? Due to the cream cheese?

  15. Can you freeze the peanut butter balls and coat them with chocolate in a couple of days?

  16. I just made these and they are delicious! The only thing I changed is that I added one spoonful of peanut butter into the almond bark. I can not wait to bring these to my Christmas Party tonight.

  17. I had the exact same brainstorm yesterday making the Oreo truffles…..cannot wait to get to the store so I can make these.

  18. How Long can you store them ?

  19. Can be used like cake pops?

  20. Just finished making these….They are to die for!!!!

  21. I think I would have to try these dipped in white chocolate. Yum!

  22. This looks much easier then what we do!

  23. I have a great Nutter Butter ball recipe, given to me by my vegan stepdaughter. Instead of the cream cheese, I use a jar of Jif peanut butter for the binder. You get more peanut butter flavor and it’s not necessary for it to stay refrigerated after dipping.

  24. I am making these dairy free! using back to nature peanut butter creme cookies and tofutti cream cheese and vegan chocolate chips…I’ll let you know how it turns out!

  25. I’ve made these twice & everyone has absolutely gone crazy for them. My boyfriend is addicted to anything choco-peanut butter & he has been begging me to make them again. Good thing Christmas is right around the corner! Thanks so much for sharing! :)

  26. Can you freeze these?

  27. Bakerella, thank you for making your recipes so easy to follow, I love the step by step :) I just finished making these, I can’t wait to share with friends and family! We love nutter butter!

  28. I am confused.. I have made the cake pops per your video and they have been a big hit. I keep seeing the cake pop pan for sale and I have thought about it but i hate to waste my money on something that messes up my product. Do you mix the icing and the cake mix together and put in pan or is the pan just for cake to bake and dip?

  29. Hi Bakerella!!

Last December, I was introduced to your website though a cupcake bite my friend made. They were absolutely delicious!

I’ve just perusing through your recipes and i saw this one! I love peanut butter and chocolate and I’m wondering if you could adapt the recipe to include additional peanut butter/almond butter/nutella etc in place of cream cheese? I think it might enhance the peanutty flavor or at least bring a bit more dimension.

If you could try that and let me know that would be great!! I’m on a never ending diet and my husband doesn’t like peanut butter so these would never get finished in my house!

  30. These are amazing! Simple, delish and cute :)

I think the next time I make them I will try a white chocolate version as well as nutella version.

    Thanks for the recipe! Cheers!

  31. Can’t wait to try this one! :D

  32. I am doing a chocolate fountain for a wedding and normally do chocolate chip cookie dough balls, which I freeze the night before and put out not too long before the event. I am wondering how these would work.. anyone try this?

  33. Made these for my husband’s work pot luck. They were a huge hit! Thanks for the wonderful recipes!

  34. I am from Ohio and we call these tasty treats…yes…BUCKEYES! (They definitely look like a buckeye when you dip all but on small edge.) GO BUCKS!

  35. These seem OK. I prefer the oreo balls, now thats great!!

  36. will these balls hold up if you put them on lollipop sticks?

  37. My friend always uses several big tablespoons of canned frosting instead of the cream cheese. Use enough frosting to make the balls into balls…then cool/freeze, dip and eat. If you use a stick make sure to freeze with the stick already in…and dip so coating touches the stick….stability.

  38. i loved the oreo truffles, and i had the same thought about nutter butter ones being equally excellent! however, at least when i tried it, the peanut butter inside tends to leak a bit of oil if you let the truffle sit out at room temperature more than 5 minutes, making it kind of sickly. shame :/

  39. Just a question, can you make these as a pop as well or do they not hold a stick while dipping? Just found your site about 2wkes ago and am MAD about pops! So glad I found you, too cute!!!

  40. I am 12 years old and I make oreo truffles all the time. I also make peanut butter pretel balls and smores balls ( that are no bake ) that are to die for. Bakerella I love your blog and baking!

  41. can you put these on a stick like the cake balls?

  42. Girl Scout Cookie THIN MINT BALLS =)

  43. just made the truffles…had a hard time with the melting chocolate – dipping the balls and having them come out perfect…what tools/tips do you recommend? they are definately delicious

  44. i’m allergic 2 peanunts, but my 4 year old is a penut butter lover, bet this she will love

  45. I made these last year for a cookie exchange and they were such a big hit that I was asked to make them again for this years exchange. No one can get over the fact that i didn’t use peanut butter!

  46. Hello, I’m in high school and I jus discovered your blog and I love it. My friend and I have to make food for our baking class and we are addicted to cake balls. So we r trying the oreo balls tomorrow :)) wish us luck, thanks again!!

  47. I’m planning on making these at work tonight as mini turkeys for thanksgiving tomorrow :)

  48. can u plz tell me …i have blended nuts …thy r like ppwder shape can i use same procedure to make these balls for those blended uts….

  49. How DO u do it? I purchased your book the day it hit Barnes & Nobles bookshelves & because I work @ a library I had them purchase a copy for our patrons as well. :) I’ve been baking since high school ( the 80’s) but I was so scared to try your cake balls! I tried them 2 wks ago & brought them to work. They were a huge hit & now 1 of my gf’s from work has asked me to make some more treats for a baby shower. I’m going to make the Oreo truffles along w/ these. I soo hope I do them justice! Thxx for all your creativity & hard work Bakerella!

  50. I was thinking of making these very small and wrapping the oreo around it… Would that hold together?

  51. I made these and they look so beautiful! I followed your directions exactly but found them to be a bit too “cream cheesey” for my taste. They just don’t have enough peanut buttery taste inside. I think next time I make them, I will take out a bit of the cream cheese and add some peanut butter. Thanks for the great idea!!!

  52. OMG.. it looks very easy.. i’m so speechless.. I don’t know what i must to say about bakerella.. so awesome…

  53. I think I will try to make these in the shape of a peanut and see what happens.

  54. These remind me of a childhood peanut butter candy my aunt used to make…from actual peanut butter….she would make small pb balls and place them in the fridge for a few hrs..then the idea was to dip them in chocolate…but they never made it that far…we would sneak in and eat them before.

  55. You’ve sincerely inspired me to do what I’ve been wanting to do for a while and it’s little things like these, with cookies and cake. I’ve made a different version of these before but with Maria cookies and condensed milk. PLEASE TRY THIS OUT! I’ve added mini chocolate chips to this dough and it looks like cookie dough! They are sweet and addictive. I don’t have a recipe but the consistency it like the ones from this recipe.

    Hope to hear back,

    Very hopeful & inspired,

    Mina ^_^

  56. I made these last night and took them to work. Everyone loved them!! They are sooo yummy!!

  57. My balls were really greasy

  58. Just wanted to share a version of the Oreo truffles that I made…
I made the regular Oreo balls, mixed in about 3/4 cup of coconut to the Oreos and cream cheese mixture, rolled into balls and dipped into milk chocolate coating, then topped with crushed almonds. My version of Almond Joy Truffles…they were a HUGE hit! Hope you enjoy!!!! :)

  59. peanut butter bon bons: 1 cup butter, 2 cup peanut butter, 4 cup powdered sugar. Refrigerate. Dip in melted chocolate and place to dry on wax paper (I use a toothpick to dip them). You’ve got to get them to just the right coldness for easiest dipping, so play with it a bit.

I’ve been eating these for years, my Mom’s recipe! Thought I would share!

  60. ah, gotta add…I’ve always been told I’m supposed to add butter, but never understood why, lol. They get rave results so I figure I’ll stick to it.

  61. These look pretty good. I have a peanut butter ball recipe I made up…I need to measure what I do so I can share it. Basically it’s just peanut butter, powdered sugar and some rice crispies, covered in chocolate.

  62. I made these and they were a hit with my whole family. The inside tastes like peanut butter cheesecake. I can’t wait to make more!

  63. I made these a few weeks ago and they were AWESOME! Very rich but so, so, tasty! You definitely need a tall glass of cold milk with these. Will make again and again! Thanks Bakerella!

  64. I have a recipe that is similar to this, but is much sweeter (probably because of the powdered sugar)

9 oz or crunchy peanut butter
    1/4 cup of butter melted
beat the two together until combined
    then add
1 and 5/8ths cups of rice cereal
2 cups of powdered sugar ( I don’t have the recipe with me, but it may be more or less, so add until it become a consistency conducive to rolling)
roll them out to the same size as yours and then dip in chocolate. People go crazy over these, and they can’t get enough!! Good Luck

  65. yumm those really do look gourmet!

  66. I made these on a study break tonight for my house and they loved them! Growing up, ladies at my church always made peanut butter eggs for easter, and they were always a huge hit, so I took this recipe and instead of balls made eggs…yum! and SO EASY!

    lovely!

  67. Oh dang, I wish they sell Nutter Butters here in the Philippines. I haven’t seen them around the groceries yet, but this will be another good excuse to buy them. I love peanut butter!

  68. I have a similar recipe to this, but instead of using nutterbutters, just use equal parts peanut butter and icing sugar… and than hide a maraschino cherry in the middle. AMAZING!!

  69. I just started reading your blog. It’s pretty amazing. I’m actually making a little recipe book for fun for my grandma and me, and putting some of your cute ideas into it.

I didn’t know if you’d found a great peanut butter ball recipe or not yet – but this one is pretty good if you’d like to try it. I’m not sure where it came from originally, but my Grandma’s made them since my dad was little. It makes them in bulk though. She makes them every Christmas for our family – which is pretty big. You’ll like them though – they have chocolate :)

    2 Cups Chunky Peanut butter
3 Cups Crushed Rice Crispies (measured before Crushing)
    1lb Powdered Sugar.
    1 Stick Softened Butter
    4 oz semi-sweet Chocolate, melted

MIx ingredients and roll into balls. Place on Cookie Sheet
Melt chocolate in a zip-lock bag in microwave on Medium.
Cut 1 tip of the bag, and drizzle small amounts of chocolate over tops of peanut butter balls.
    Refrigerate.

    They’re easy.

  70. Hi Bakerella-
I’m trying to make something similar to these only in the Shape of Easter Eggs. I’m going to do these for a fundraiser for a young man that passed away unexpectedly, but I have a few questions…
Because these will need to be made in large quantities for pickup I am concerned about refrigeration. Most of the recipes include cream cheese- a few do not. If I opt for cream cheese they would have to be refrigerated correct?

I know my church growing up did these every year for a fundraiser and didn’t refrigerate (no room). I’m guessing they just did the pb and confect. sugar version…can you see any need for refrigeration there?

Also, how long do you think these would keep? I want to make sure I deliver a fresh product…but I’m only one person!! I’ll need to do a little along the way.

Thanks so much! Love, Love, Love the Blog!!! =)

  71. I just found this site and I love it. These look yummy and PB & chocolate, come on, can’t go wrong there. I’ve see lots of things on here I can’t wait to try.

  72. I made these the same as i made the football oreo’s – and they were amazing! Just like a home made reeces PB cup! yum!!

  73. I made the Nutter Butter Balls for a Super Bowl gathering – some dipped in melted choc chips, some dipped in peanut butter chips and then drizzled chocolate over them – the dipped in peanut butter chips were the fan favorite BY FAR over the chocolate dipped. YUMMY!!!!!

  74. I made the Oreo version with mint oreo’s this Christmas. I added 1/2 tsp mint extract to white chocolate bark before I dipped them just to add more mint flavor. They were delicious!!!

  75. Wait, I found it!

  76. I can’t find the oreo recipe, am I just blind??? Thanks, Linda

  77. Anything peanut butter is okay by me, oh yes indeed!
    You’re very clever, didja know?

  78. I made these last night, only thing I did different (and it makes it SOO MUCH EASIER) is add the Cream Cheese to my crushed cookies in the food processor instead of trying to hand mix. It took about 30 seconds to mix the two. They turned out GREAT SUPER AWESOME. I brought some to work and they didn’t believe that I made them!

  79. Oreo balls (of all different flavor combinations) have become an absolute staple at our family functions! Everyone requests them – I can’t wait to try the Nutter Buttter version. You said the peanut butter taste isn’t really strong – I am going to try to dip some in melted peanut butter chips and then drizzling melted chocolate over for decoration… another choc/pbutter combo we have tried and loved is to just dip regular oreo balls into melted pbutter chips – these are actually my fave combo, so I can’t wait to try the nutter butter ones – bought the cookies yesterday!

  80. buckeye recipe (penut butter balls)
    4 sticks butter
    32 oz jar PB
    3 boxes confectioners sugar
    chocolate candy coating

Melt butter in large bowl, mix in PB. Mix in sugar, 1 box at a time. You have to use your hands to mix in the last box. Now roll into walnut sized balls. Dip into chocolate candy coating. Enjoy! The powder sugar really makes these melt in your mouth.
Warning: this is a large recipe makes 2 full cookie sheets.

  81. Have made these for Christmas gifts and people are raving over them.

  82. Wow… A friend of mine made the Oreo ones for a small get together and I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make… I love this recipe! Thanks from the Deep Heart of Texas, Bakerella!!

  83. you might like this peaunut butter ball recipe

  84. I finally tried these last weekend and I must say…WOWZERS! They were a huge hit. I made both the nutter butter and oreo and loved them both. Thanks for always making baking so much fun!

  85. I made these along with the regular cake balls for my wedding reception. They came out so delicious and were so easy to make. I also made brownie balls with brownie crumbled up and cream cheese frosting; they had a wonderful texture with a little crunch from the edges of the brownies, sooo good!! With the nutter butter ones I used the reserved cookies and sprinkled them on top while they were still wet. What a hit these are!! Thank you for the wonderful ideas :)

  86. karla – yep. the whole cookie.

  87. do i use the whole cookie or only the half with the cream

  88. Shanna – Yes, I would keep these in the fridge. You could try them with peanut butter. Let me know how you like them.

  89. With the cream cheese in these would you say they’re not safe to keep out of the fridge for an extended period of time or not safe to make and ship to a friend? Do you think it would be better to make with peanut butter instead of the cream cheese?thanks

  90. hi! i am finally going to make these tomorrow and i'm sooo excited!

question – i have a bag left of about 9 oz of semi sweet chocolate chips from ghiradelli that i was going to melt. do you think i should use a whole 12 oz bag, or should 9 be ok?

    thanks so much!

  91. Wow! Of course being Canadian I could not try these but just wanted to let you know that I have made the Oreo version as well as a Maple version. Please check out my blog for more…
    http://heatherscreativebug.blogspot.com/2009/05/dear-bakerella-i-sure-do-like-your-blog.html

Thank you so much for sharing!

  92. I did them again last weekend and used less peanut butter. I used about a 3/4 cup of peanut butter, maybe a 1/4-1/2 cup of powdered sugar and a 1/8-1/4 cup of ground peanuts. They were perfect, completely peanutty and held their shape in the melted chocolate. And they still had that fun crystally nutter butter texture. I think these are way better than the Oreo ones. I made those last weekend too, and I still think these are tops.

  93. I’m sure they taste good that way too.

  94. Super easy. I was eating these 45 min. after I started making them. I didn’t use cream cheese (I sorta hate cream cheese), and just used peanut butter and powdered sugar. They lost shape a little under the dipping chocolate, but I think if I lessen the peanut butter and up the powdered sugar they’d be perfect next time (I used 8 oz of peanut butter). But they’re fine now — and I just keep them in the fridge.

  95. If it puddles a lot, immediately draw a separation line with a toothpick, that way it can be broken off easily when it dries.

Or tap off the excess chocolate more before you lay on the wax paper.

  96. Hello Oh wonderful baker! Can u offer any tips for dipping these in the chocolate-i see u didn’t get those “feet” or puddles of chocolate at the bottom. What;’s your secret?? Thanks!

  97. You are courageous. Let me know how it goes.

  98. I’m going to attempt to make these as a pop using a 2 3/4″ cookie cutter in the shape of a Number 3. Think it will work? I’ll be sure to let you know but would appreciate any thoughts or tips you might think of off the bat. I’m scared . . . but courageous (or stupid) enough to try!

  99. Liesl and Kevin – And, they are easy!

  100. Those look really good!

  101. I AM SO MAKING THESE!!! Hello…peanut butter with chocolate! YUMMY!

  102. Great and thanks for the tip Lovey!

  103. Thank you so much for posting all these great recipes! Everything we have tried has been a hit. We made these Nutter Butter treats for Valentine’s Day for my daughter’s soccer team. The moms were upset that I only gave them to the kids. hahaha I am sad it took me so long to get around to making them because they are our new favorite treat.

BTW, I found the cookies are cheaper at Target than the grocery.

  104. Lauren – sounds yummy

    Anonymous – ditto.

  105. Lauren, pb ganache sounds fantastic. Would you share?

I totally want to try these nutter butter balls. I like oreos, but I LOVE nutter butters. Glad I found your blog, Bakerella!!

  106. I’ve got a great recipe for Peanut Butter Truffles that’s a light and smooth peanut butter ganache on the inside if anyone is interested. Definitely a winning recipe in my family!

  107. Amanda – I totally agree with you. But, I think you will like the oreo ones better.

  108. I made these and to me they LOOK better than they taste. Don’t get me wrong, they are tasty, but not so good that I can’t not eat them. They are still sitting in my fridge and they aren’t “calling” to me. LOL I like things to be a little sweeter. BUT, my husband adored them and they are calling to him!

I am going to try the Oreo cookie one next.

  109. ??????? ????????? – Zillions of Yays!!! Glad they were a hit.

  110. Once again, these little guys saved my day (and my nameday). I made them for a treat at the office and they were an absolute hit. I used strawberry flavored cookies but the impact was equally smashing. Zillions of thanks!

  118. Oh, I love dark chocolate. The ones I’ve made without using the candy coatings just seem to melt on my fingers as soon as I touch them though.

Mercken’s makes a dark chocolate candy coating that’s pretty good btw.

  119. I am sure the peanut butter truffles you made are delicious but you have to try to make the melted chocolate with really good semi sweet dark chocolate; it made a world of difference. The taste was devine! I took a baking class two weeks ago and made these delicious truffles with real chocolate not candy melts – see how it turned out at http://www.examiner.com/x-1490-Broward-County-Restaurants-Examiner

  120. Proportions mainly. A similar recipe I used for oreos did not use the entire package, so I followed suit here. You can probably get away with the entire thing though.

Also, I had to eat a few a long the way. :)

  121. Why do you crush all *but 5* of the nutter butters?

  122. brislenn – I didn’t put mine in the fridge, so I don’t know if that could be the cause or not. What kind of chocolate did you use?

  123. Just got finished making your Nutter Butter Bite Size treats. Simply delicious! However, I noticed that they seemed to “weep” a little while I waiting for the chocolate to harden. I think it was actually some of the oil of the peanut butter in the cookies and I’m sure it wasn’t the chocolate. The only thing I did differently was to put the balls of cream cheese and cookie in the refrigerator while I got the chocolate ready. Anything to prevent this? Did any others experience this?

  124. Let me know how they come out.

  125. I’m going to try these this year with girl scout cookies :-)

  126. The oreos are knockouts!

  127. I also make these its a great recipe.Never did Oreo version.but want to try them.Thank you so much!
    hugs ginger

  128. jenna – you are welcome.

  129. I just made these and they’re so delicious! Thanks so much for the recipe :)

  130. kendalls mom 3 – that’s cute. Hope he likes it.

  131. Oh my gosh…just found your website!! Love it! My husband is NUTS…pun intended….about PB and chocolate. I just told him about this recipe and he told me to please print it out!

  132. Mary T. – thanks for stoppin by!

E – that sounds great. Thanks for the info.

  133. I replaced 2oz of the cream cheese with 1/3 cup peanut butter and added a 1/4 cup chopped peanuts. They were fantastic and had a great texture. Thanks for the great recipe.

  134. Not Martha sent me over here (congrats on Cupcake Week!) and these look like the best things I have ever seen. Why oh why am I on a diet right now?!?

    Cheers!

  135. debidee – I like your idea with the peanut butter, I may ave to try that next time. And maple leaf cookies sound good. Thanks!

  136. I was pondering these and it occurred to me you could amp up the peanut butter flavor by replacing half the cream cheese with peanut butter. Ooh, and decorate the tops with a peanut so you can tell them apart form the oreo ones on a plate.
Of course, we don’t have Nutter Butters here in Canada, but we do have maple leaf cookies… hmm…maple and white chocolate… I might just have to go to the grocery store :)

  137. Checked at the store today. There are 32 cookies in one package. So I must have used 27. But they are somewhat oblong and not round like oreo sandwich cookies.

  138. I see… I used less than half of it, well, weight concerned. And I was wondering why the balls were so soft and sort of lost their shape easily… Thanks a lot!

  147. Posting from Athens, Greece, I really have to say your blog is a must-see! Unfortunately, no Nutter Butter cookies in Greece, so I used vanilla crean filled cookies. Is it possible to be more specific on the cookies quantity? For instance, tell me the net weight of their package? I really thing I used less cookies than I should. Either way, they were delicious and didn’t make it to see another day…
