Grocery item goes gourmet

Oreo Truffles made with, you guessed it… oreo cookies. They are super easy to make and even easier to eat. They are crushed oreos blended with cream cheese and then covered in white chocolate. I first tried them when a co-worker made them – even though I had the recipe myself for a while. My original plan was to take these to work tomorrow to return the favor, but they’re already half gone. I don’t know what took me so long to make these, but I’m glad I finally did. I’ll put these right up there with my red velvet cake balls.

Here’s the bark that I use (except imagine it in white chocolate)

Oreo Truffles

Oreo Truffles

1 package oreo cookies (divided… use cookie including the cream center)
1 8oz. package cream cheese (softened)
white chocolate bark

1. Finely crush 7 cookies in a food processor or place them in a ziploc bag and crush into a fine consistency. Reserve for later.
2. Crush remaining cookies and stir in softened cream cheese. Use the back of a large spoon to help mash the two together.
3. Roll the mixture into 1″ balls and place on wax paper covered cookie sheet.
4. Melt chocolate as directed on the package and then dip balls into chocolate, tap off extra and set aside on wax paper covered cookie sheet to dry. You can sprinkle the tops with the 7 crushed cookies for decoration. (I usually eat mine before they make it to this stage.)
5. Once dry, refrigerate and enjoy!

Makes about 36 truffles.

Notes: I used a small cookie cutter to push the mixture through for the heart shaped truffles. Also, it helps to freeze the uncoated balls for a few minutes to keep the mixture from starting to fall apart in the melted chocolate. If this becomes a problem, dip them in the chocolate, let dry and then dip again. They are also good dipped in regular milk chocolate bark. And for an extra twist, use the mint oreo sandwich cookies.

  1. Hi, I just made these and want to share a little tip. I had extra white candy melt and extra crushed Oreos (from sprinkling on top). So I mixed them together, spread it out between 2 pieces of wax paper, popped it into the freezer for a few minutes, then broke it into small pieces. I plan on placing these on the tray around the truffles when I put them out!

  2. I’m dying to make these gorgeous little treats for the holidays. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to the proper chocolate bark coating because I live in a small isolated northern community. Can you please make a suggestion for a different coating? What about melted chocolate chips (I’ve read some say that this doesn’t work)? Would icing sugar and cocoa work as a coating? I can’t believe that I’m getting stressed about truffles, but they are too cute!

  4. my sister in law hooked me on these 2 years ago. she competes in figure competitions and has to severely restrict for a LONG Time. this was her “party treat” after the competition was over… My life has never been the same after tasting these delicious oreo treats!   8. My Family loooovvvved these. I used double stuffed oreos froze them for about 15 minutes and they were good to dip. I made two batches one was the Vanilla bark and the other the Chocolate bark they were absolutely wonderful. I took them to a party and everyone wanted the recipe! Thanks =)

    I’d like to mention that when I made the nutter butter ones, I didn’t refrigerate them. I left them at room temperature until they had all been eaten (at least a week). They had cream cheese as well, didn’t seem to do anyone any harm, and held up just fine.

    Britt – Yes, but I’d use frosting instead of reg cream cheese since that needs to be refrigerated.

  12. I just made these for the first time and decorated them like pumpkins for Halloween. I followed the recipe, however, I kept the cream separate, and made mine with the cookie outer layer and creamy center. That’s what an oreo is all about, right?

    I used the wilton candy melts, and they just never seem to work as well as the bark. I tried thinning it, but still no luck, as far as just dipping with a spoonI wound up making “pops” even though I hadn’t planned to.

  13. You can use any chocolate chips or white chocolate chips (even a crushed Hershey’s bar) to dip these in if you melt the chocolate slowly (double boiler) and add a bit of Crisco shortening while it’s melting. Makes it very smooth and shiny.

    Do you think the truffles would be sticky enough to roll in sprinkles or crumbs straight away without the chocolate coating? I live in Australia and we don’t have bark and the chocolate would start melthing on the truffles as soon as I took them out of the fridge.

  17. I finally got around to making these with cream cheese yesterday. The first time I made these I didn’t gave access to a refrigerator so I used a commercial cream cheese frosting. I think I might actually like them better with the frosting… These don’t seem quite sweet enough, and they have a very strong cream cheese flavor. Of course, the sweetness might not be an issue if I wasn’t dipping them in 60% cocoa chocolate chips…

  18. OMG – these were sooo good. i made them for chirstmas last year. but instead of dipping them in white chocolate i dipped them in dark and dribbled some white on top to make them into puddings.
    I add a little extra icing sugar though to the mixture because i think it tastes a bit too bitter and chream cheesy otherwise. BUT THEY ARE SO YUM!

  20. Jewel – I’m not familiar with that coating. But bark is the same as candy coating. But different from baking chocolate if that helps.

    Also, it looks like the chocolate might have been too hot. Let it sir for a few minutes before you dip and maybe it would have been thicker. Also you can redip to make the coating more opaque. And use wax paper instead of foil. The balls will remove easier.

  21. Hi Bakerella! Need some advice.. Tried making your Oreo truffles but it turned out to be really bad.. The chocolate does not coat properly and the base is not coated at all.. It gets stuck to the base..I placed some photos of it on my blog.. Would greatly appreciate it if you could advise.. I’m from Singapore..   24. I've made these several times and they're always a hit! I've always used 'Baker's Semi-sweet Baking Chocolate Squares' for easy dipping. And the best part is you can get them at any grocery store. With a little sprinkling of crushed oreo to top them off, they look so pretty and taste sooooo….good.

  32. I made these Oreo truffles for a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation at my school. They were a hit! We sold them 3 for $1, and we probably made several hundred dollars off of them.

    And as for the white chocolate vs. the bark, our student council agreed that while the bark was much easier to manage, the white chocolate was much tastier.

  39. I made these yesterday along with the nutter butter balls and the cake balls (in devil's food) for my parent's 30th anniversary. It was a total success! I used some of the tips I found while perusing and they helped so much (like freezing the balls and using toothpicks).   40. I was so excited to make these after I did the hamburger cupcakes! But these didn't turn out well at all. :( I think it must have been the chocolate I used. I used light chocolate and white chocolate wafers but I don't think they worked well. Would they be different from the coloured wafers? I used a double boiler and the balls were melting and getting bits in the chocolate (this was after I had put them in the fridge for awhile). Anyway, the taste was…interesting. It's kind of a weird texture. I'm not sure I'll try those again but I'll definitely be trying your other recipes. :)

  41. These are delicious! Lucky in Love told me about these, so I decided I would make them for an upcoming 4th of July party. Well, I just made the test batch and Oh My Yum!

    I used baking chocolate with shortening though, instead of the white chocolate bark. Held up beautifully so far. I'm dipping it twice to make them extra white (so I can drizzle red & blue chocolate over them).

    And, yes you can try chocolate and adding shortening if you can't find the melts.

  45. Mystery solved as to why my truffles “sank” rather than staying round! The first time I made them, I used a food processor, not only to turn the Oreos into crumbs, but also to mix in the cream cheese. I guess that basically “liquified” the cream cheese, making the balls too wet to stay round. The next time I made them, I used the food processor for the cookies, but then mixed in the cream cheese with my mixer on low. The balls stayed MUCH firmer. I didn’t try making them as pops (that’s the next project), but I think the consistency should work now that I figured out the problem.

    My next test is going to be to see if it works as well with store brand sandwich cookies as opposed to the brand name Oreos. I want to try the mint ones, and my local store only has Double Stuff mint Oreos, but has “single stuff” mint cookies in the store brand. We’ll see how it goes…

  49. DawnP – yes, try using less cream cheese… and put them in the freezer for about 10 min to get them firm enough to dip easily.

  50. I made these for a meeting at my daughter’s preschool this weekend, and they were such a hit, everyone “voted” that I’m now required to make them for all future school events, LOL!

    A couple of people (in the comments) have asked whether you could do these on sticks like your cake pops. That was my original plan, but it didn’t work for me. The consistency of the Oreo/cream cheese mixture is too “wet,” I think — the balls don’t stay round, they “settle” into a flat-bottomed shape almost immediately. (Who knew there was so much oil in Oreos? My hands were slick with it after rolling them!)

    Any suggestions on how to change the consistency to allow these to be made as pops? I actually made two different batches, one where I “reserved” the 7 Oreos, and one where I used all of them in the filling — both ways, it was too wet to make pops. Maybe less cream cheese? Or mix in some chocolate cake? Any suggestions would be most appreciated — these were TDF delish, but I love the cute factor with the pops, so I’d love to combine the two!

  51. I freeze these all the time and it works great! You’d never know they’d been frozen…same texture and taste.They need next to no time before they can be eaten. Only problem is that they are too easy to eat whenever you want!!

  59. I think the frosting might end up being too sweet (is that possible?). I actually ended up using a yogurt substitute. I drained the yogurt overnight to get most of the liquid out and then beat it with 3 tbsp of butter and 3 tbsp of powdered sugar to get the consistency of cream cheese and they turned out beautifully.

  60. Cheryl, you could try vanilla frosting I guess, I’m just not sure what the consistency would be like. You would probably need a lot less than what is used for the cake pops.

  64. A friend of mine told me about this recipe years ago. I make it all the time. I use semi-sweet chips and a tsp of vegetable shortening and melt my chocolate in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time.

    Also, I’ve started making some variations, adding raspberry, hazelnut and mint extracts to the oreo mixture. DELISH! Brand new reader by the way. :)

  79. Thank you so much for the recipe! I froze the balls before dipping, and used almond bark. The only tip I’d give is that the almond bark solidified very quickly after dipping, so be sure to sprinkle each ball right afterward.

    I also bought a bag of the mint oreos, and after that I may try the peanut butter ones.

  86. angiefaith – I don’t remember how many were in the package. The brand is Philadelphia cream cheese and yes you can try it with other cookies. I used them with Nutter Butters, but the oreos are better.

I had trouble finding bark, partially from lack of time, so I used Nestle Premier White choc chips and melted them in 30sec intervals in my micro-cooker(product from Pampered Chef), I only did half the bag at a time so it didn’t harden. They were very tasty with the chips even. I also used two forks for dipping which made it much easier!! Thought this might help, because I have trouble seeing outside the exact ingredients or methods used in a recipe and was pleasantly surprised at how well the came out the first time.

    I also made them in Mint filling with dark choc…but all I could find were the double stuff mint oreos…they were mushy, but still tasted great…maybe I will try refrigerator next time instead of trying to freeze to harden.

    i was thinking of making these to sell as wedding favours in my local area. the only problem is refridgeration. would you suggest putting a little disclaimer in each favour box telling guests to store uneaten truffles in the fridge? not everyone is a pig like me & might not eat them straight away. how long would these keep outside of a fridge?

    You can find other colors in vanilla flavor as well. Check out Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

    Connie – They’ll taste different and have a different texture/consistency.

    Both are really good in different ways. Also, I haven’t tried the frosting with the oreos.

  104. I made these yesterday and they were a massive hit. I only made a small batch (300 grams of Oreos and 125 grams of cream cheese)but this made about 35 truffles. I used normal cooking white chocolate chips, melted them in a bain-maree and the dipping turned out fine.

  114. I just tried making these for the first time yesterday. I couldn’t find the bark, or any of the Wilton candy melts, so I used the Baker’s white chocolate.

    They tasted so delicious! I love them!

    The Baker’s white chocolate had a great taste, but the end result was not nearly as beautiful as yours with the bark. I normally wouldn’t mind how they looked, since they tasted so good, but I was making them to put in Christmas treat boxes for friends, and wanted everything to look as cute as possible.

    So I rolled the balls in coconut immediately after rolling them in the baker’s chocolate. It solved the look issue – the coconut hides any messiness of the chocolate. And they tasted amazing! The coconut flavor worked really well with the Oreo chocolate taste.

I am going to try making these truffles but shape them into small holiday cookie cutter molds, like candy canes, gingerbead men, leaves and stockings. The shapes are very small like an inch and half in length so I’m hoping it will all work out fine.   119. I just made some tonight with the Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos – wow! After I dipped them in white chocolate I crushed candy canes up in the food processor and sprinkled them on top. The Limited Edition packages are smaller, so they were pretty soft (should have used less cream cheese), but they still taste AMAZING!

  163. anonymous – I just use a spoon. I dip the ball in a bowl of the melted chocolate bark. Then cover the top with chocolate with the spoon. Then I scoop it out and tap the spoon against the side of the bowl really good to get the excess chocolate off. It also smoothes it some by doing this. And then, I transport it to the wax paper and let it carefully slide of the tip of the spoon so that the part of the ball that was sitting on the spoon lands on the wax paper. Hope that helps.

    I had a lot of trouble coating them in chocolate, what utensil are you using when you dip one into the mixture? I used a spoon but the coating came out uneven and sloppy. Is there a special technique to coat them?

  174. kandaboers – I haven’t tried them yet with double stuf, but if you reserved any like the recipe suggests, just scrape off the creme centers on the extra ones and crush and add just the remaining cookie parts. If that doesn’t help, refrigerate your mixture for a while before you begin to roll them into balls.

  178. Tried both white and chocolate chips – NOT good. Used a double boiler and perhaps the water was too hot, but dipping left way too much coating and it hardened in the pan before more than a few were dipped.

  181. I just made these and they turned out great. I’m not a typical cook, I don’t own much except pots and pans, so I make due with what I have.

    I used a 1 lb 2oz package of the reduced fat oreos. I crushed all of the oreos up by hand, and sifted them all through a collander to make sure they were powdery enough.

    I used a block of reduced fat cream cheese. I didn’t think it was going to be enough for all of the oreos, but it turned out fine.

    After making balls out of the oreos mixture, I put in the freezer for 20 minutes. This allowed them to set up.

    I made a double boiler and melted a 12 oz package of Nestle Premiere White Morsels, even against the better judgement of other people on this board. The chips worked FINE. They hardened up and didnt stay sticky. Don’t listen to these people.

    All in all, delicious and rich. Well done.

  183. I tried a recipe from the Bakerella site. It was the Oreo cookie truffle. WOW! I am not a choc maker at all. So it was pretty messy, BUT I bought all the right things. Little red boxes at Micheals
    that holds 3 truffles. Cute little foil liner holders, stick- ons for the box that have a Valentine love quote & tied a gold ribbon on it.:)

    OK, for the truffle I tried to put to much into the food processor & then had to take half out & go again. I bought the right coating choc, as I read all the blogs. It was Wilton Coating Choc. I got it in white & dk choc. I bought plastic dipping tools & well the dipping was the hardest part.

    Next time I will make my balls smaller. I bought some white fondant which I rolled out & cut with a tiny heart cookie cutter & that covered mistakes on the top. I did white choc & dk Choc. I put choc melt into an icing bag & drew hearts on the white ones & some zig zags on others. On the dk choc truffles, I rolled out the fondant & cut tiny white hearts & placed them on the dark.

    When my 18 year old daughter came home & saw all the cute boxes & decorated choc, she begged for a box for her friend. I knew they were a hit cuz she is so picky. She lit up after tasting these. So thank you so much. I have made a truffle.

  189. I used to make peanut butter balls similar to this technique. It called for regular chocolate for dipping, but you add a bit of paraffin to it. I bet that is the big difference. So, you might be able to use other kinds of chocolate if you wanted. Just add the wax.

    And h-bomb is right. Don’t try this with chocolate morsels. I added a pic of the bark that I use.

    I’ve also tried it with Baker’s semi-sweet Baking Chocolate. This worked pretty good, except if you held one for more than a few seconds it would start to melt on your fingertips. The bark is best I think.

  195. Just a word of warning from my first effort: Be sure to use the DIPPING Chocolate :) I had disastrous results when I tried to dip my oreo truffles in melted white chocolate morsels. The non-dipping chocolate is too heavy and sticky to work. Also, I assure you the Mint Oreos are PHENOMENAL! I think next time I try this recipe I’m going to try the Golden Oreos and see how they turn out.
