It’s no SHAM…these ROCK!

Mint Oreo Truffles

You guessed it… Mint Oreo Truffles ummmmm… good. These might even be better than the originals (well, maybe). And, they’re just as easy to make, but because I could only find the mint Oreos in Double Stuf, I changed the ratios a little from the regular Oreo Truffle recipe. Here you go…

Mint Oreo Truffles
Yield: three dozen truffles

Mint Oreo Truffles

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. Double Stuf Oreos - Cool Mint Flavor
  • • use 22 cookies with cream centers included
  • • use 10 cookies with cream centers discarded
  • 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, room temperature
  • chocolate, vanilla or green candy coating

Instructions

  1. Finely crush the cookies in a food processor or a ziploc bag with a rolling pin.
  2. Stir in softened cream cheese. Use the back of a large spoon to help mash the two together completely.
  3. Roll the mixture into 1" balls and place on wax paper covered cookie sheet.
  4. Place covered in freezer or refrigerator for a few minutes to help retain shape when dipping in melted chocolate.
  5. Melt chocolate as directed on the package and then dip balls into chocolate, tap off extra and set aside on wax paper covered cookie sheet to dry.
  6. Refrigerate and enjoy!
  7. To decorate: Make your green and/or white shamrocks . You can use a ziploc bag with a small corner cut off or a decorating bag with with a small round tip attached to make the shamrocks. Use a toothpick to direct chocolate into desired shamrock shape. Let dry.
  8. Then, dip half the truffles in white chocolate and the other half in green. While still wet, press your cooled shamrocks gently on the top of your truffles.
  9. For another effect, you can take the ziploc bag of chocolate and drizzle across each truffle with the alternating color.

Notes

Recipe amended from Kraft Food & Family Fall 2006.

Mint Oreo Truffles

I used a brand from Hobby Lobby for the green candy melts and regular white chocolate bark found at Kroger for the rest. But since I can’t find a link to them online, here’s a few links to some other candy melts I found, but haven’t tried yet.

  1. no Oreo with mint cream inside avaliable in Poland :(:(:( actually I have not seen any cakes with mint cream inside in polish shops… why? hmmm I really wish to try this receipe, maybee in the future… love this website. Thank you for good recepies.

  2. merveilleux cite et bien sur merveilleux gâteaux ! dommage que ce n’est pas en français , je viens souvent voir vos magnifiques créations gros bisous

  3. those look delicious! if i had made these, then they would all be
    stuffed in my mouth!

  4. I’ve learned new things by means of your weblog. One other thing I’d like to say is that often newer laptop os’s often allow a lot more memory to be utilized, but they in addition demand more storage simply to perform. If someone’s computer is unable to handle a lot more memory as well as newest program requires that ram increase, it might be the time to buy a new Computer. Thanks

  5. I wanted mine green inside so I did some swapping. I got a package of the mint Oreo’s and a package of vanilla. I took the amount of cookies I needed from both, swapped out the mint stuff for the vanilla stuff and used a bit of coloring to make my inside greener. I use gel color so I don’t thin out the texture but if you do just add in an extra bit of ground cookie. Save the rest of your extras for another time.
@Angel DO NOT use any typeof food coloring with any type of chocolate…it will make it seize up and be unusable. You can usually find “chocolate” coloring at the craft store…like Hobby Lobby.

  6. Do you need my address? ;) I could totally put down a few dozen of those!

  7. Hey there,

I loved this post and included it in a roundup I did of some of my favorite St Patrick’s ideas. I hope that was okay! I included a picture with a link back to this post. You can read it here: http://www.sageandchocolate.com/a-grown-up-st-pattys-day/

    Thanks for the awesome recipe!

  8. I mean mint extract. :)

  9. Is it possible to substitute mint oreo cookies for regular oreos & mint essence? If so how much?

  10. Ooh! I just made some mint chocolate cake balls for Christmas, but I think I might try these for St. Patty’s Day!

  11. As soon as I saw them and read the name of em’ My mouth HAD to water!

  12. I just made these a couple hrs ago. Taste’s great!!! Dipping into the choc came out messy though. What technique do you use to make the truffles look smooth?

  13. hi i was wondering how to store chocolate because when i did the white the chocolate clumped up and burned within five minutes please help.

  14. for the drizzle effect, doesnt the candy melts melt fast in the ziploc??

  15. I’m excited for this recipe! My friend and I are going to make them together for St. Patrick’s Day next week. My boyfriend’s going to love it! :)

  16. Wow, these look fantastic!

  17. OMG!!! I cannot wait to try these! I am so going to make these-can’t wait!

  18. luv ya! got ur cake pop book. AWESOME! i wnat to be a cake decorater when i grow up. i’m only 13. my bros love the idea and encourage me to give them all the mistakes. :)

  19. yummmm….Good for St. Patrick’s day!

  20. Please update the links to the images as they are all broken.
I would love to see them.
    Thanks
    H. Chjroniger

  21. So I really want to mail some balls to a friend of mine out of state. Any tips on keeping them from melting besides the obvious overnight delivery? Thanks!

  22. I LOVE your website. You are a very clever, creative girl and how dear of you to share all of your creative tips. You insire me.

    Thanks for the great ideas!!!.

  23. LOVE your website!! I made lemon coconut cakeballs. everyone loved them. lemon cake mix, with lemon frosting. My mix came out too mushy and i didnt know what to do so i added in coconut until it became thicker and easier to dip in white chocolate. they tasted very rich so next time i think i will use less frosting. Now I think I am going to try the oreo truffles

  24. this a great recipe i love it me and my sister made them and we ate the whole thing

  25. Everyone I know, especially my husband, LOVES Oreo balls! However, the last couple times I’ve made them I’ve noticed an oozing of oil coming out of them. I even tried using one-third less fat cream cheese and it still happened. Is there a reason for this? Thanks! Have a blessed Easter!

  26. I made these. Everyone loved them. But let me say this–you make it look WAY too easy. It took me longer then i expected but like I said they were a big hit. Except I kinda messed them up because thats what happens when I change recipes. I couldn’t find mint oreos so I got regular ones and used liquid food coloring which changes the texture (a lot mushier) and made everyone’s teeth green. I also decided to use white chocolate instead of candy melts but it hardened in 2 seconds. I’ll try not to change your recipes next time.

  27. I love making Oreo balls…they are super easy. I’ve started using the ready to use Philadelphia Cheesecake filling instead of cream cheese and then you can call them “Oreo Cheesecake Truffles” which sounds even more la-de-da!

  28. I’m making these Right Now – they’re in the freezer at the moment. The first steps were so easy, and all that remains is to cover them with chocolate.

I couldn’t find the green candy melts so I am going to attempt to colour some white chocolate ones with food colouring. If it doesn’t work, we have plenty of chocolate bark on hand since my Dad and I keep forgetting we have it – I bought some today without realizing that there are 3 packages in the pantry

  29. These are wonderful!!! I made some for work today and they were gone before lunch

  30. These remind me of the oreo cheesecake cupcakes in my Martha Stewart cupcake book that I have. They were a hit for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the next few times I was “forced” to make them. Everyone kept going on about them. I’ll definately have to try this too! :)

  31. These are so cute! I have to make the truffles for tailgating. Seriously, people get mad if I don’t make them. ;-)

  32. I used Merckens green melts, but they just wouldn’t melt smooth; they just stayed gloppy. I don’t recommend this brand.

  33. Salute!!!! from a big fan!

  34. Someone at work makes these and they are so good. haven’t tried the mint ones yet. But I want to know…what happens to the cream centers from the 10 cookies that you discard the cream from? ;-)
I think I like this recipe even more….does the cook get the cream centers???? LOL

  35. These look almost too cute to eat! I posted a link to this recipe on my blog: http://ificould-ificould.blogspot.com/2010/03/shamrock-truffles.html
    Thanks for the great recipe!

  36. I made a version of these today with the regular mint Oreos, and I think the ratio is fine. I also melted some Andes mints and Lindt dark mint chocolate and mixed it with semi-sweet chips and dipped the truffles in those. Came out nicely.

  37. Bakerella – I love these. They’re adorable. Can they be made in advance and frozen? How long do they last in the fridge?

I am so excited to go through your blog & find more creative ides for my Christmas themed wedding!

  38. Bakerella — words cannot describe how awesome you are!! Anyway…looking for a cute St. Patrick’s Day item and think I found it. Can these be made as cake pops? This will be my first attempt, but you make it look so easy. :0)

  39. Sure. Give frosting a go.

  40. Wow, I would love to make a variation on these for the holidays!

However, I am VIOLENTLY allergic to cream cheese. Is there an alternative binder that I could use, perhaps chocolate frosting instead?

    Thanks!

  41. uvita – these are done with regular cream cheese.

  42. I love this webpage, mmy friend told me about and now is on of my favorite. But Im a little bit new when it comes to baking, I made the cake balls last time, and they where a hit, now I want to make the Mint Oreo Truffles, but I dont know if is cream cheese frosting or is regular cream cheese.

  43. Awesome. Here are my oreo truffles..thanks to you!
    http://crystalitarossalita.blogspot.com/2009/06/baby-shower.html

  44. Wow, and I thought these were some of the easiest things I’ve done. Was your cream cheese room temp or softer? Did you discard some of the cream centers?

  45. I had a horrible time with these. The balls are soft and even after refrigeration, just go mushy when I try to dip them, so they look a mess! I’m very inexperienced, but I’d like to let others know that in my opinion, these are NOT worth the trouble if you are a beginner like me!

  46. MiJa – Glad they liked them!

  47. I just made these for an office potluck, and they were a HUGE hit!!! One of the guys bit right into it and before he could swallow, yelled “Holy Crap, these are GOOD!!!” So THANK YOU for the recipe! They were so easy and fun to make even though I had to improvise with a few ingrediants. Many colleagues will be heading to your blog for the recipe!
    Cheers!!!

  48. They are not terrible. Shush!

  49. I just made these this year and made terrible looking green shamrocks (I just posted them on my blog if you care to giggle). Luckily, the truffles are quite yummy – you are super creative, Thanks for your inspiration!!

  50. I made them first I think. But once they are dry. You can just pick them up with your hands. They are pretty durable.

  51. Not sure if you’ll see this, as this post is a year old, but a question in case you do– did you make the shamrocks on wax paper first and then transfer with a butter knife, or something along those lines? I haven’t worked with the colored candy melts before in terms of making intricate decorations like this, and I’m not sure how to make and transfer them without breaking them in the process!

  52. aki – are you talking about cake balls or oreo balls. The cake balls are really moist. If you make them again, try using a little less frosting.

The oreo balls in this post are much denser in consistency.

  53. is the filling supposed that have a gooey texture? that’s how mine turned out… but everyone seemed to be fine with it. i just think they’re being nice. lol.

  54. Anonymous – If you make homemade, you may want to. But since, I use the canned, I will leave them on the counter in an airtight container.

  55. Thanks……I thought they were a bit mushy so I refrigerated them. The next day I asked a few friends to sample. They thought they were great. If you use a cream cheese frosting, do you have to refrigerate?

  56. anonymous – Yep, it’s supposed to be moist. If it seems too moist, then add a little less frosting next time. Also, I think they taste better on the day after you make them.

  57. I just tried cake balls for the first time using a french vanilla box cake and vanilla frosting with chocolate bark coating. I am concerned that the cake mixture is too moist. Is it supposed to be kinda soft when you bite into it?

  58. Yours look yummy Carole!

  59. Made these for a party tonight and boy were they delicious! I posted my results if you get a chance. Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring!

  60. writerjax – no, not me, but I’m glad you liked it.

  61. that was fantastic. And it reminded me very much of ‘Teeny Little Super Guy’ from Sesame Street back in the day … anyone? anyone? ;)

  62. TaraMetBlog – Don’t say that. I’m sure they will.

Claudia – The white can be harder because it shows everything.

Try this. Leave them in the fridge/freezer while you dip and then just take a few out at a time, so the rest don’t loose their firmness. Also, just dip them again in newly melted white bark. It will cover up all of your crumbs, and might even cover smoother. Good luck.

  63. BAKERELLA

I absolutely LOVE your blog! And i made these oreo truffles for Valentines Day, but I found that it was very hard for me to dip the truffles easily and without them looking like a mess. I dipped them with a spoon and I did refrigerate them for about 20 mins, but by the end my white chocolate bark was barely white anymore with the crumbs :( Can you give me any helpful suggestions on dipping them?
    THEY WERE FABULOUS however!!!

    -Claudia

  64. Gonna have to try these, but i know they won’t look as nice.

  65. aunt lolo – that’s awesome. I’m glad they came out great for you.

  66. Update. I couldn’t resist. I made the truffles. I scraped out the fillings, like you said, from those extra ten cookies. (That leaves one cookie from the package with no home. Om! Down the hatch he went.) I tasted the finished product…and added the fillings (that I hadn’t already eaten – I needed a mint fix!) back into the bowl and it made it just minty enough. AMAZING. I had so much fun forcing my friends to guess what was in their “truffles” before they could take their second bite. Only one girl got it right, but she apparently eats an inordinate amount of Double Stuffed Mint Oreos.

  67. susan from food blogga – Oooh… shamrock shakes – send one over.

    nana – thank you.

    recipegirl – UR2 sweet.

maybe strawberry – thanks, I’m glad you like.

anonymous – oh, your neighbors are lucky.

  68. I made these yesterday and they were DE-lish!!!! I made enough to give my neighbors too!!

  69. you are so creative!!! i just love visiting your site to see what new things you’ve made

  70. ubGreat fun- I love them!

  71. wow! those are super cute and look so good!

  72. Aah! I love these! I used to buy mint oreos every year for my husbands when we were dating. He’d love these. You think washing them down with the Shamrock shakes I just made might be going over the top?

  73. lulu lemon – Thanks and no problem

    goldteeth – tasty indeed!

miss t – omg… you did a really great job. I see you had no problems with the dipping either. Fantastic!

miss b – Thanks, I know what you mean.

anonymous – I have the best results with chocolate bark, (Kroger brand believe it or not) It comes packaged in blocks. So I will put three blocks in a bowl at a time and melt in the microwave at 30 second intervals until melted. Then I will drop one ball in at a time and spoon chocolate over the ball. Then with the spoon, I lift the ball out of the chocolate and tap the side of the spoon against the side of the bowl. I tap it several times to knock the excess chocolate off. Then I will let it slide off the spoon onto the wax paper covered cookie sheet so that the part of the ball that was sitting on the spoon is now sitting on the wax paper.

nikki – glad you like it.

    jenmarie – thank you

christie – great job with the truffles. I like the sprinkles.

kendylady – I melt the chocolate bark or candy melts in the microwave in small batches. On these, I dipped them again after they dried to help them smooth out. That made them a little thicker (I did it mainly on the white ones) But, as for the dipping, I just use a spoon and a bowl.

    Anonymous – check back tomorrow.

  74. I hope you have some Easter ones you can post!! I’d love to see some in time to make them for my Easter party this weekend. I can’t wait to try them. You are so creative.

  75. Bakerella,

I made the original oreo truffles tonight (added mint and some green food coloring to 1/2 the batch). Anyways, I need some tips on the dipping part. What do you use to melt your chocolate? What do you use to get the chocolate so thick on yours? Is there a tool you use? When I dip lollipop type things I don’t have the problem cause I have the stick to hang on to…so what’s your secret to the balls? Also, I use Wiltons melting chocolate and I’ve never had a problem (Walmart/Michaels)…I just have a problem with the balls! Help!

BTW- LOVE your blog. My hips grow every time I read it!

  76. I was so inspired I made these myself and I want to thank you for the delightful yummy treat! Thanks for the inspiration! Happy St. Patty’s Day!

  77. So yummy looking! Just found your blog and loving it!

  78. So cute and they sound so yummy! I just love following your blog! I added a link to yours from mine! Thanks for all the great ideas & recipes!

  79. Bakerella,

I absolutely love all the great treats you create! My sister and I tried to make the truffles today. Could you please explain more about how you dip the balls in chocolate? For the life of us, we couldn’t get them to come out coated as anything resembling a round shape! Help!

    Thanks! Love your site!

  80. Thanks for sharing, I have unfortunately turned all my friends on to your blog, we will all be needing Weight Watcher’s but it has been so much fun getting to the XXL!

  81. Thanks for your inspiration, Bakerella! Just finished these up this morning and aded them to my blog! I made them with your cakeball recipe! Fabulous!!!

  82. these are really cute, look tasty!

  83. As always your never fail to impress me..Thanks so much for sharing…

  84. Thanks anonymous – Hope you come back soon.

elise – Wow, thanks for commenting. I love your site. It’s really well done and great recipes. I’ll have to look for the Newmans Own. Thanks.

r, k, & o – hey green and white drizzle is just as cute. I’m glad you tried and like them.

lauriebelle – thanks and you can lurk here anytime!

kitchentrove – I have to admit, I like the originals best too.

pamela lang – It’s a set of three extension tubes from Canon. EF25 and 2 EF12’s if that helps. You can use one or any combination of them together. I borrowed them, so I really don’t know much about them, but I usually just use one of the EF12 rings/tubes and that get’s pretty close.

lauren – thanks for the tip.

  85. I made these, as well as the regular Oreo truffles, when I read the recipe for Oreo truffles. I just used the whole package of Double Stuff Oreos like you would do for the regular ones, and the mix was a bit too moist before I put in cream cheese because of all the cream. I added in Thin Mints (thank you Girl Scouts!), about 2/3 of a tube, so it was the right consistency. If its not Girl Scout season, maybe you could substitute Keebler Fudge Shoppe Grasshopper cookies? http://www2.kelloggs.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=1124
Needless to say, both flavors were a huge success!

  86. What a creative site. The desserts and pictures are awesome. I think you mentioned somewhere that you used macro rings on your lens for more close up? What do you use?
I’m thinking about trying those cute cake balls on a stick for my son’s first bday party, but not sure if I’m up to it, :)
    thanks
    Pam

  87. These are so cute…and a great use of something I’m not a big fan of…flavored Oreos…I just like the original.

    Love your blog.

  88. Absolutely FANTASTIC! I’ve been a lurker here for a while and I just have to say that this is one of my very favorite blogs! Way to go!

  89. Yum, yum! I ended up making these last night and sooooo good! Mine are not as cute as yours :) I don’t have the skill or patience for the shamrock decorations but green and white with drizzle will work for me. Thanks for sharing!

  90. Those are completely brilliant. I love oreos. I even splurge on Newman’s Own Os. Love the mint green theme. Awesome idea.

  91. wow, i stumbled on your blog and i must say i have never seen anything quite as amazing! you are truly creative and inspirational! i’ll be frequenting your site a lot! keep up the superb job!

  92. Mollie – I guess your husband’s a lucky guy! I’ll email you.

    maichelle – thanks so much!

cakespy – I agree! But, I think I’m going to have to try some match powder in something soon. That stuff looks pretty cool.

kevin – Thanks. I saw your vanilla bean cheesecake yesterday on tastespotting. So yummy looking!

nicole – It’s like an all you read buffet. Thanks.

  93. I really, really need to remove some of you baking people from my Google Reader because I swear I gain weight just reading your blogs. I try to watch what I eat, but it’s great to enjoy seeing the recipes all pretty. When I finally decide to make something I already have in mind what it will be. This one is waaayy at the top of the list!

  94. Those look great! Perfectly themed for St. Patty Day.

  95. I always found the St. Patricks Day sweets-offerings very disappointing…until now. Bakerella, you have rocked my day and tastebuds with these!!

  96. omg bakerella your creations are so adorable and they look so yummy!

  97. whoops… i knew this would happen sometime. i linked myself to the wrong site. ::sheepish::

  98. aaaa! my sister in law sent me to this blog of yours: yum! and such lovely photography! i can’t find an email contact but want to ask if i can use some of your photos when i blog about you on our blog, royal buffet. let me know! :) you can email me at molliegreene@gmail.com

my husband’s birthday is march 17 and he’s a minty-chocolate kind of guy so i have to make these for him. thanks!

  99. robyn – no problem.

    erin – thanks.

mandy – but they’re nothing compared to your matcha cake. I’m still thinking about it.

    landa – thank you.

nicole – I’m just lucky they came out alright. I was experimenting with the shamrocks.

lindaj – your welcome. I don’t think I’ve had a thin mint before.

melissa – those will work. That’s what I used for the green. They’ll taste chocolatey, but you can always dip in chocolate candy wafers for a more chocolate taste.

    megan – why thanks!

handi dandi mandi – glad you liked the candi (covered truffles)

nucmed is hot – Oh good. and good luck!

    kristin – thank you!

robyn – that’s cute, thanks for making me feel good.

dolce – Thanks. I’m glad you think the pics look so tasty. I use a canon rebel xti with a 50 mm fixed lens.

  100. wow! these look great! Your photos always look so awesome. What kind of camera do you use? You have a very professional look to your shots. I love it! It makes me want to jump through my monitor and take a bite!

  101. Bakerella,
When my rss feed shows me you have a new post my heart literally jumps with excitement! And, as usual, you do not disappoint! I have yet to make the original truffles but am DEFINITELY making these. {sigh}…I am your number one fan! :)

  102. Cute idea, we have a St. Pats party on Monday, these would make great treats!
By the way, I’ll have to let you know how they go over at the baby shower this weekend too!

  103. Oh, no! My hips curse your FOREVER.

(But my little boca loves you!)

  104. I was thinking the same thing here– but I was going to use irish creme liqour. We will see if they come out!

  105. How fantastic do these look?!!?! Cutest little shamrocks!

  106. Fun, fun, fun!!

  107. Very fun and creative. Well done!

  108. these are so fun and festive! you come up with such creative ideas.

  109. What a great idea for St. Patrick’s Day!!

  110. Yummy! I think my son and I will be making these tonight!

  111. you’ve done it again! fantastic!

  112. I saw the mint last night at the store, thanks for ammending the recipe, I’m making tonight for the school party tomorrow! You’re my new hero!!

  113. These sound so great! I will need to try these out! They turned out so cute.

  114. Very cute. You have the best ideas!

  115. they look really yummy, but I dont have that kind of oreos where I live, do you think it would work if I make the regular ones and add a bit of mint essence in the cream cheese before mixing??? or maybe in the white chocolate covering?

  116. I’m going to make these for a bake sale at the end of the month. (can’t wait!!) I’m in Canada and have never seen the “bark” but we do have the candy waifers / discs that you melt. Would those be OK to use? Would they still taste chocolatey?

  117. These sound sooo good! Like a Thin Mint (which I already love), but even better! Thanks for the recipe!

  118. Absolutely adorable. What a “lucky” find!

  119. These are so cute!

  120. another great creation!

  121. These are the cutest things ever! So festive!

  122. Truly fantastic looking! Yummy! WOw I gotta try those! Thanks for sharing.
    Hugs,
    Robyn
