Peanut Butter Brownies

IMG_2417

I sat down this morning to bake something and started looking through cookbooks I’ve been wanting to try out. I have several new ones and haven’t had time to bake from any of them yet. Maybe I’ll show you the ones I have next time and you can tell me which one to start with. I can’t decide. I love them all.

But deciding wasn’t my problem so much this morning because everything fun I wanted to make called for an ingredient I didn’t have. Ugh.

And I wasn’t going back out to the store. Nope. I was in comfy clothes mode.

IMG_2424

Luckily, I had peanut butter.

IMG_2486

And chocolate chips.

I pretty much always have those two.

IMG_2461

So I decided on peanut butter brownies.

With chocolate chips …

IMG_2513

I started by adding a half cup but then finished with a full.

Taxes are due Tuesday (yuck) so treat yourself (yes).

IMG_2566

Spoon please.

These are perfectly fabulous just like this but I thought I would frost them too.

IMG_2631

I had more chocolate chips I needed to use up – you know – since I need to go to the store anyway.

IMG_2641

Melt the chips and then mix in some peanut butter, butter and powdered sugar.

IMG_2678

Yes – over the top and completely unnecessary.

IMG_2736

Really, the only reason I wanted to frost them was to decorate the tops…

IMG_2754

Like peanut butter cookies.

Untitled-1

For the record, I think they are better without frosting.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies
Yield: 16 brownies

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Additional Time 15 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies

  • 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 Tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar, sifted
  • Milk

Instructions

  1. For the brownies: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease an 8 X 8 pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir the flour, baking powder and salt together with a wire whisk and set aside.
  3. In a mixer, cream the butter and peanut butter until smooth. Add the sugars and mix until combined. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix until combined. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Spread in the pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until done.
  5. For the frosting: Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals until smooth. Stir in the peanut butter until completely combined and set aside.
  6. In a mixer, beat the butter until smooth. Add the sugar and mix until combined. Add the chocolate and peanut butter mixture and mix until completely blended. You can add a teaspoon at a time of milk if you would like the frosting creamier.
  7. When the brownies are cool, spread the frosting on top.
  8. Go ahead and cut the brownies into 16 servings in the pan. On each serving make peanut butter cookie marks with a fork. I placed the brownies in the freezer for a few minutes first to firm so the frosting didn't get too messed up when I cut them.

Notes

I baked these for 32 minutes but they really needed a few more for the center to be completely done. So to avoid the top turning too brown, place a sheet of aluminum over the pan about halfway through baking. Or you could bake them in a 9 X 13 inch pan for a few minutes less and get more brownies too.

Enjoy!

  3. Hey these look awesome but I don’t eat eggs, could I replace them with applesauce? Thanks!

  4. These look delish, but I took the advice and put an aluminum foil piece over the top halfway through, and now it is still raw after 35 min. Hoping it will cook through…

  5. Just waiting for these to come out of the oven. They look sooo good! Can’t wait to taste test them!

  6. I made these for my family back in Michigan. They are wonderful! Just finished making them for family in Arizona. I think they will become a holiday staple!

  7. Peanut Butter and chocolate. How could you possibly go wrong!? I think everyone needs a PB brownie recipe to master. I have definitely mastered mine…http://hideandgocook.blogspot.com.au/

  8. don’t really know what the last person was thinking. I think they are THE BEST. I made them last week and forgot to save your site. I search for over an hour for it again. Just made a double batch, sending some to the kids teachers, and some to a friend that just had a baby and LOVE PB and Chocolate! Thanks for sharing, we LOVE THEM!

  9. Not terrible…but not good either. Not even really a brownie. More like a dry cake..

  10. Just made these with my 4 year old daughter I’m not a baker but love to cook so I’m super excited how easy this was to make. Her father and her both love peanut butter and chocolate they look and smell amazing thanks for sharing.

  11. Would it be a problem to use natural PB instead of regular?

  12. These look to die for. I loooovee peanut butter and brownies :) also I love the blog xx
    themusingsofateenagemind.blogspot.com/

  13. Really sweet!! i would put less sugar next take since the pb is already sweet. And i also made the frosting on half and it was plenty!

  14. I am 13 and LOVE 2 bake n decorate…. i found your book about cake pops and looked up the website and it’ll b the first thing i’ll look at if i run out of ideas!!!! i wanted to make something for my parents annivesary and found the PERFECT recipe: your peanut butter chocolate brownies!!!! and can i use white and black chocolate for your wedding cake pops instead of candy coating cuz i dont have that at the moment and the stores close by dont have it either?! keep doin whatcha doin!!! -angelina-

  15. These are shockingly delicious! No frosting, 8×13 pan. Yum yum yum yum YUM!

  16. I made a double batch of these today. I forgot to double the sugar, but they were still a hit!!!

  17. I’ve made these a few times since you posted the recipe and my family loves them. By chance can I make them ahead of time and freeze? I’m planning a BIG party and would love to make them for my guest. Please email me rjennie33@yahoo.com

  18. for Melissa (#92) just make these!

    http://www.tasteandtellblog.com/2009/09/blondies-with-chocolate-chips/

(not my blog, but i’ve made them before and they’re wonderful!)

  19. These were awesome! I used 2 eggs instead of 3 because i prefer chewy brownies to cakey ones. And I baked them in a 7×11 pan. So good. Thanks Bakerella!

  20. I’m going to try making these with reeses minis instead of chocolate chips. Double peanut butter :D

  21. Yours look great! I just baked these on Friday for a play and they were a huge hit. Personally, I’m not really into chocolate + peanut butter (crazy, I know!), but even I fell in love with these. Moist and cakey and chocolatey= yum! Thanks Bakerella!

Check out my link back to you here: http://dimplesinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2012/04/peanut-butter-blondies.html

  22. After drooling all over the keyboard I checked my pantry and miraculously, I had all the ingredients. I’m enjoying a mug of coffee as the beautiful babies bake and hubby rushes home. The house smells wonderful!
Thank you for a scrumptious easy recipe :)

  23. OMG these look SO good. I can’t wait to try this recipe!

  24. I made these a few days ago and they were seriously AMAZING. Couldn’t keep them away from my mouth. I used half mini chips and half regular chips, and instead of the frosting, I melted Reese’s chips on the top and then sprinkled more mini chips over that. The crumb in this brownie and the moistness is absolutely perfect – everyone should make them! And I was surprised how peanut-buttery they were even though the recipe only calls for half a cup. Will be making this again, and calling it “peanut butter snack cake.” :)

  25. any ideas on how to amend the recipe to make them without the peanut butter? I am allergic to peanuts. Do I just need to replace the peanut butter with another fat?

  26. ohh this looks sooo yummm

  27. Looks amazing as always! Seeing this may have just complicated my sugar detox diet…

  28. Yum! We love peanut butter and chocolate in this house :). Just made something called halvah with pb and chocolate to top ice cream.

  29. Those brownies look KILLER! I want to make them so bad, haha! Too bad I don’t even have flour right now – soon!

  30. i just made these today! it’s a cold and rainy day here in boston so i figured it was a perfect baking day :)
im not usually a huge fan of chocolate and peanut butter together but when i saw these i had to make them…i used ghiradelli dark chocolate chips and half wheat/half white flour because that’s what i had and they came out so good :)

  31. While I was making the frosting I decided it also needed a banana. I threw a ripe banana in with the butter and sugar mixture and mixed until it was incorporated.

  32. I can’t stop eating these!!! Oh god!!!

  33. These look delicious! Even though I don’t love PB a whole ton, hmm, and I think I can make them work Gluten Free too! I will attempt these over the weekend!

  34. I made these, and they were easy and delicious! I didn’t bother with the frosting, but I will make the frosting for something else another time…maybe a good topping for my banana & chocolate chip cupcakes?

One note – I baked these in a square Pyrex dish, and it took 45 minutes before they were done enough to take out. The middle was still pretty moist (almost gooey), but the edges were completely done.

  35. Yumm! Definitely a must try! I was looking for something special to bake my bf.. this might be it~

  36. MAde these today and I love them. I can’t take my hands off them!

  37. I know what I will be making this weekend!

  38. anything with pb and chocolate sounds good to me!

  39. best! Love these. And I completely relate to the “comfy clothes” mode of thinking.

  40. “Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey…” that’s how the old song goes.. but still it applies true to all of us. Who could resist such decadence? I love chocolates,it’s my sinful craving. I always love the triple chocolate fudge brownies ,but this one I’ll have to try this weekend.. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  41. I think if your frosting was stiff enough that I would roll it into balls and put it between two sugar cookies and have peanut butter and chocolate pillow cookies. Gosh, I want to bake just thinking about it!

  42. Great recipe!! My only trouble is to convert cups into grammes. Sorry in Italy we don’t use cups and spoons but this won’t stop me from baking your delicious recipes!!! I have to make my own brown sugar because no one knows what it is here. Bye from Venezia.

  43. If you ever want to give powdered eggs a shot, let me know and I’ll hook you up ;) You are a dessert making idol of mine :) By the way…if you had to choose, what would be your favorite dessert? The pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are still my fave.

  44. It’d be impossible to say no to those brownies. Cool recipe and even better photos. Keep it up.

  45. Hahaha! Oh boy, you killed me with this post. The last line had me laughing. :-)

How can you go wrong with a recipe like this? Peanut butter, chocolate… brownies! oh it’s so magical!

  46. YUMMMM!!! i TOtally see that chocolate chip face!!! :D

  47. Those brownies look to die for. I would love to try to make them. Of course I doubt I could make them as good as you can. Do you have a fan mail email?

  48. Yummy! I’m on a pb and chocolate kick these last couple days and these are going in the oven as soon as dinner is done. For some strange reason, I added about 3/4 cup of oats. We’ll see how they turn out!

  49. Those remind me of these, which I should totally make again soon, ’cause they’re awesome:

    http://home-bakedhappiness.blogspot.com/2010/09/peanut-butter-bars.html

  50. Yum. I’ve been wanting a peanut butter and chocolate something and brownies are the best.

  51. :)! I love brownies!! And I only like peanut butter in cookies or brownies! And I LOVE LOVE LOVE chocolate chips@

Man, Bakerella, you’ve done it again!

  52. smile if you see a brownie frownie face! lol…you are one funny gal. Reading your blog puts a smile on my face ;)

  53. They look sooo god i can almost smell them ! Just started weight watchers lol so will make them just have to shear the love !! I would love to see what your pantry looks like if you always have a suply of treats !!

  54. Lauren – Your brownie photo was so cute!
    Erica – sure
Krysta – I like the way you work
    Jessica – we should!
Megan and zombiesgirl – I didn’t use one for these. Excited to dig into some new ones though.
    Tiffany – Haven’t used those.
RebeccaH – Whoops. Just added that in. Thanks!
Samantha – Glad you liked them.

  55. The brownies look great~Your photos are beautiful~..and i love the peanut butter cookie look! p.s. i can see the cute frown!

  56. I love the pb cookie look on top of the frosting. BUT I also love that you said you liked them better without frosting. I always think brownies are kind of ruined with frosting. But then again, I’m crazy and kinda hate frosting. Sue me.

    Gorgeous as always!

  57. I made these as soon as I got home today — they’re absolutely delicious! Instead of frosting them, I drizzled semi sweet and white chocolate on top. Love it!

  58. These are five steps too far – and right on target for where my mind is at!! I’m loving every ounce of these!!

  59. i must try these! Hope you’re well!! Miss you!

  60. Visually your photos are beautiful and so, so tempting! :)

  61. They are in the oven…can’t wait for them to come out! Thanks for the recipe. I love you!

  62. I love the frosting either way. Looks too darn delicious xoxo

  63. I am so tempted to bake these tonight! I have a friend with a birthday tomorrow – sounds like a good excuse :)

  64. So this might be a stupid question, but do you cream the sugars with the butters? Or are they included in the “add dry ingredients” instruction?

  65. Peanut-butter and Chocolate is definitely the best combination of foods out there….you really can’t get any better!

  66. I wish I could come up with something THIS GOOD with stuff from my pantry! Bakerella, you always inspire! :)

  67. These had me smiling even before the peanut butter brownie face ;-)

  68. Over the top, no. Perfect, YES!

  69. I don’t even think this would ever get to the completed brownie stage! These look divine.Rx

    http://sandersonsmithstory.blogspot.co.uk/

  70. OMG those look great-love PB and chocolate :D

  71. Love the idea of making them look like pb cookies, so much more fun.
    Was this from a book?

  72. These sound so awesome. I tried something similar the other day that I was in love with so I’ll have to give this recipe a try. Do you ever used powdered eggs or butter? I wonder how it’d turn out…probably amazing!

  73. So yum..I laughed so hard when you said to add a half cup of chips but then decided on a full cup…I do that all the time..you can NEVER have enough chocolate! These look fabulous and sweet idea to criss-cross the top as you would for P.B. cookies! NICE ! ! ! !
    Oh.yes, I saw the face!

  74. I don´t know if the peanut butter here in Brazil isn’t good as yours, but I really don’t like it! (sorry guys).. I keep seeing these amazing recipes with it and I never do them. Should I? PS: I see the brownie face!! =D

  75. These look awesome but they seem more like PB Blondies to me. Don’t brownies have to have chocolate or cocoa in the batter? Hmmm. I guess its just a matter of the name tho so I suppose it isn’t that important. Just curious.

  76. OMG delicious! The way you frosted these is so cute. I’ve never seen frosting like that. These are heaven.

    M.

  77. I love peanut butter and chocolate!

  78. oh I hate that when you are missing one thing, no way I am getting out of my comfy cloths to go to the store!

  79. these look like just what i need!

  80. yum. I’m teaching a class with middle school kids tomorrow night and these will be perfect!! Will also try a batch Gluten-free for those in the class who are…thanks!

  81. Oh man, way to ignite the biggest craving for these on my lunch break! I’ll have to wait, but these are 100% on my ‘Recipes to Try’ list.

  82. I just ended up making these and the whoopie pies. I must admit I found it a bit harder to make than normal as I’m used to weighing thinks out. The whole american “cup” thing all just seemed a bit too inaccurate for me but I guess I’ll get used to it.
I think my brownies might be slightly overcooked but I’m sure they will taste delicious. And the whoopie pies were just amazing!!

  83. These look so yuMMy!
You must have the haPPiest kitchen!
    xo

  84. I was just wondering what I could bake to bring to bible study on Wednesday night and these will be perfect! Chocolate and peanut butter a perfect combo can’t wait to taste these :)

  85. Peanut butter and chocolate – I can’t get enough of them together. Love that you decorated the frosting to look like pb cookies!

  86. Mmmmm!!! I’d keep that frosting if I were you!!

  87. Yum! I’m not a huge frosting fan so I would probably prefer them without frosting as well. They look fabulous!

  88. :) I see a face too!
Hey I actually have all the ingredients for these, well actually don’t have the chocolate chips but I do have tons of Easter chocolate leftovers so I’m thinking I could use those. Will try making these without the frosting. Thanks for the recipe .
    :)

  89. Better without frosting? I’m not so sure….Guess I will have to make them and be the judge!

  90. OMG! Those brownies look amazing. What cookbook did you use?

  91. these.
    in my kitchen.
    can we make it happen??

  92. My teenage son is going to be so happy when he comes home to these brownies!! Great recipe! Thanks for the inspiration!

  93. Looks like you actually had the perfect ingredients on hand, love these!

  94. Peanut butter + chocolate chips = heaven!

  95. Yummy for your tummy!

  96. Love how easy these are! Yum!

  97. I need this to get through my finals!!

  98. These look great – will definitely give them a try. I’m away to make my first ever chocolate whoopie pies…wish me luck!

  99. Those look YUMMY! :D

My favorite way to “frost” brownies just uses chocolate chips. Basically, as soon as the brownies come out of the oven, you put a single layer of chocolate chips on top of them (as many as you can get on and still be a single layer), then give them a few minutes so the heat from the brownies can melt the chips. Then you take a spatula or knife and spread the chocolate so that it coats the brownies like frosting. Yummy, and so easy to do! (Not to mention, if you have chocolate chips, you have everything you need!)

  100. would the frosting work for cupcakes? sounds yummy

  101. Wow, I feel the need to drink a big glass of milk after just looking at these! They look so delicious!!

  102. This looks amazing!! I love that you marked the frosting just the same way we do PB cookies. :)

  103. :) These look delish – exactly what I need to get me through my essay writing!

  104. Oh I see the little brownie face!!!

  105. I’m making these immediately. We are peanut butter and chocolate LOVERS! Perfection, Angie! :)

  106. Yes!!! Finally a peanut butter brownie recipe. I too always have it on hand. Thanks so much!

  107. Love how to did the traditional peanut butter cookie “look” with the fork. I bet they are delish.

  108. I do see the face. It looks like a tiny jack o’lattern. Only you bakerella. So sweet.

Althought the icing looks good, I have to agree these might be a little cloying with that much pb & choc.

    Take care!

  109. Those sound delicious!
Every year, our church does a chili, cornbread, and brownie cookoff and for three years running, I’ve won a few of the brownie awards and by far, the favorite was peanut butter brownies! I’m a big fan of them on any given day anyway, but they’re especially wonderful on those tough ‘rainy’ days. Thanks for sharing!!

  110. I’m seriously tempted to go to the kitchen and make these right now even though it is 9:30 pm here! I love chocolate and peanut butter

  111. OMG!!! these look so yum!!! I’ll make them ASAP!!
    XOXO

  112. They may be better without the frosting, but that frosting will definitely be going on something else! It sounds amazing! When I make peanut butter cups, I always mix a little peanut butter into the chocolate. Yum.

  113. Haha! Before I read the last line of the post I thought, “that looks like a face.” LOL! Looks yummy!

  114. yum! these are serious brownies!
