Triple Chocolate Trifle

Chocolate Trifle

Or more appropriately… How to Make the Best of a Messed Up Cake.

This dessert comes courtesy of my sister. She wanted to bake a cake for me – chocolate of course with chocolate chips – and was already to decorate it and surprise me. One problem. The cake stuck to the pan and fell to pieces when she tried to take it out.

Now, if it were me, I would have just made some cake balls out of it. But being the creative one that she is, she turned her mess into a masterpiece.

I don’t have her cake recipe, but here’s what you do.

1. Accidentally mess up your cake on purpose by mistake
2. Whip up some chocolate pudding
3. Layer it all in a trifle dish with some cool whip and refrigerate.

… and in the words of Tim Gunn… “Make it Work.”

Chocolate Trifle

If she hadn’t told me it was a mistake, I never would have known.

Actually, there was only one problem with this cold, creamy, cakelicious dessert. It was way too easy to eat. Let’s just say, I wish I had a bigger spoon.

  9. Could I use any kind of cake or just chocolate? I was thinking of using red velvet.

  10. I didn’t do the chocolate pudding,
instead I just used chocolate cake, whip cream, and chocolate syrup. and put it in the fridge.

    :DYUM!

  11. My mom called hers Chocolate Delight! Her twist? She added a softened block of cream cheese to the Cool Whip in the middle and topped it with plain whipped topping.

  12. I will definitely make this! When we finish re-making our kitchen and we have an oven…. It look delicious!

  13. I made these yesterday and it was a huge hit!! It was so yummy and very easy to make!

  14. This has become the new house favorite! Easy peasy! But we like it with chocolate mousse instead of pudding :)

  15. This is definitely a delicious dessert! My friend makes that seam exact thing but adds heath bar bits to each layer! Mmmm!! You could totally add any candy bar bits for a delectable taste!

  16. My aunt is a home economics teacher, and I’d forgotten she recommends exactly this recipe when a cake crumbles. It’s absolutely delicious and oh-so-easy to make. You can also use vanilla cake and banana pudding – really, any combo – but chocolate is ALWAYS the best!! Thanks for reminding me of this!!

  17. In addition to the suggested heath bars, you should also try pouring about 1/8th – 1/4 cup of Kahlua over the chocolate cake layers! It’s SOOO delicious.

  18. We made a yummy trifle too but instead of cake we layered halloween oreos! When it sits overnight it makes the oreos mushy. It is delicious!

  19. This is one of my daughter’s favorite desserts. I make it with devil’s food cake, chocolate pudding, whipped cream & oreo’s. Delish!!

  20. Bake Brownies or chocolate cake, crumble up in pieces, take chocolate pudding & strawberries with glaze, take turns dropping spoonfuls of each around trifle bowl then put layer of cool whip on top, then repeat again for 2nd layer, YUMMY !!!!!!!

  21. Trifle is one of my favorite desserts, and this one looks especially delicious! I love how you can take a mess and turn it into a delicious masterpiece. It’s great how you can make so many variations on this trifle- the possibilities are endless!

  22. I’ve seen this at Whole Foods Market. Its called a “chocolate parfait”. Yummy

  23. lots of chocolate!

  24. I made this for a dinner party – HUGE hit! Thanks for the great idea! Cake served with a spoon is awesome…..

  25. Someone will have to carry me out on a sretcher after eating THAT!!!

  26. I’ve been making trifles for years-i use all those ingredients but also add heath bar pieces and chocolate hot fudge in the middle of the layers to make it extra ridiculous!

  27. Your stuff is so AMAZING!!!!!

  28. I love, love, love this trifle. My family makes the cake (on purpose) the day before, pokes holes in it, and then laces it with 1/2 cup of Kahlua. We usually use fresh whipped cream instead of the cool whip (worth the extra 10 minutes if you have the time, tastes outstanding combined with the refreshing Kahlua soaked cake), and as others have mentioned, we layer a good amount of toffe bar bits on top of the whipped cream. This tops my list for favorite summer deserts. In fact, even though it’s not summer I think I’ll go start one now……..mmmmmmmmmm!

  29. Yum – you don’t cut it. You scoop it out.

  30. How do you cut this and be able to eat it without having it look like a mess..

  31. Yum… I’m making this right now, as shown in the picture! Chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, and whipped cream. I think I’ll add some mini choco chips on top. Can’t wait for dessert!

  32. I added Heath topping to mine, and I added a half cup of brewed coffee …just poor a portion of the half cup on the top of each ‘cake’ layer and it makes the cake part really moist. You can’t taste the coffee. It just gives it a little more flavor.

  33. Made this with my 2 yr old helper, we had a great time! It was for my grandfathers birthday, he ate 2 helpings which means he loved it! He even asked to take some home! Although my 3 sons thought I had gone mad when i destroyed the perfect chocolate cake! Thank you!

  34. my fiance's mom makes this…with a layer of butterfingers. I've also done it with oreos

  35. A friend of mine makes that by cutting up brownies and then adds strawberries to the layering. It is one of our favorite desserts

  36. Excellent dessert!!

  37. Add crunched up SKOR candy bars on each layer of whipped cream and it's even yummier!

  38. I do this with brownies and layer crushed up heath bars (or other candy) in between layers. We call it "death by chocolate"!

  39. my grandmother makes this…she calls is "chocolate sin". and boy is it…yum!

  40. I make this all the time! My mom got the recipe from a co worker and let me tell you its even better if you add some chopped toffee candy bars in the layers!

  41. This really brings on the raves at a party or a church supper. I always drizzle some carmel syrup in the layers and add some crumbled brickle bits, can't remember the name of them right now.

  42. I had the same happen to me. I messed up a cake…what to do. I did almost the same but I layered softened ice cream into it. Now I have to make them for everyones birthdays. The last one I had to make was a lemon cake, with vanilla ice cream, add strawberrys and blueberries. Topped with whiped cream and a lil fruit and zest. oddest one was mounds ice cream with choc cake. yum!

  43. I don't know if anyone has said this already because I'm too lazy to read all of the comments, but this is one of my favorites, but I also blend up some oreos and layer that as well. YUM!

  44. I did the same thing when my mom's birthday stuck to the cake pan. My niece declared it the best cake I never made.

  45. My mom makes a trifle with brownies, chocolate pudding, cool-whip and tops it with Heath chunks. Delicious!!

  46. Amazing…that is giving me enough confidence to try and bake a cake and not worry about how it would turn out!

  47. It's official. I am missing out on the whole Heath candy bar thing. I've never had one before, but I plan on correcting that very soon.

I must have a go at this myself with some of your suggestions.

    Brownies? Candy Bars? I'm in.

  48. this is a trifle I make all the time! I actually crush up HEATH bars and use it for the topping. Its delicious!

  49. Making this pregnant lady swoon!

  50. I have the same recipe but mine calls for brownies instead of cake. And I crumple Heath or Skor bars on top.

  51. This is my favorite dessert to make and so easy!! I add a layer of crushed up Skor bar and drizzle it with chocolate syrup and carmel syrup! HEAVEN!!

  52. yeah, we do this, but instead of cake, we use brownies, and we add chopped up heath bars in between the layers. it's my most requested dish actually. so easy.

  53. Oh I'm making this for July 1st celebrations here in Canada tomorrow !!

it looks very yummy and easy !!

  54. I am going to give this a try this weekend. I have a cake pan that no matter what I try, the cake always sticks! I was going to get rid of it, but I might just have to hold onto it now. My husband and son are choco-freaks, so I might try chocolate whipped cream to make it even more chocolately!

  55. YOU must KNOW that I am now officially drooling all over my laptop! Chocolate = heaven.

  56. Once I made a gorgeous cheesecake, topped with a fancy design of cherries & blueberries, and stuck it in the freezer to "firm up" a bit. When I pulled it out, I hit the dish against the door, and it slid partway off the plate! I quickly put it on the counter and tried to slide it back. Well, it collapsed, and was an absolute mess. I scooped it all up and put it in a glass bowl – voila, cheesecake trifle!! I never got so many requests for a recipe before. Now I make it that way on purpose (in a pinch, I've even bought a cheesecake and stirred it up with a can each of cherry & blueberry pie filling).
    LOVE this site!!

  57. The last time I did this, I made cake balls. :)
But, I have made a trifle before from messed-up brownies. If you want to add a little pizazz, mix some of your favorite liqueur into the cool whip.

  58. I never thought you were going to say that it was a broken cake! This will help me when mine breaks on me!!!

  59. For those not in the US, Cool Whip is a cheap imitation of whipped cream, it's mostly artificial, there's no real cream in it. But it sure is yummy!

We've been doing this for years with failed cakes or cake scraps. My sisters and I came up with a sigar-free trifle for our diabetic dad using a sugar free lemon pound cake from the store, blueberries, sugar free lemon pudding… it was always slightly different every time we made it, but it always disappeared within 5 minutes at the family reunions! Something about cake mixed with pudding and cool whip just makes it all taste even better–it just jumps out of the bowl and into your mouth!

  60. Yeah we make this all the time with the crunched up heath pieces as another layer… it is SO good! We call it "punch bowl cake" :)

  61. I make this every year at Thanksgiving and for any other family event. I can't walk in the door without it or they all get upset. I make it with brownies each time and sometimes add heath bars, or caramel syrup. It is YUMMY!!!

  62. Another way is instead of making the pudding the regular way, use 1/2 cup water and 1 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk and 1 box of pudding. Once that is all mixed fold in 8 oz of cool whip and use that-ADDED SUGAR, such a sweet dessert. I use brownies instead of cake too. :P

  63. I've taken to making individual cakes (using a biscuit cutter to cut out pieces of cake), and I keep the leftovers to make trifle. I need to use up a couple of cake scraps that way.

  64. MMM!! I love this! A lady I work with makes it with heath bars and yeah – way to easy to eat!!

  65. ADD crushed heath bars to your trifle. EXTRA YUMMY. I keep some in the freezer for just this occasion.

  66. Hmmmm…I love chocolate trifle. Yours sounds delicious. Last time I made trifle, I used coffee pudding and heath bars. Delicious!

  67. I make this dessert alot, actually. The only thing I do a little different is I also grab about 6 SKOR candybar's, throw them into the food processor until they are like a powder, and add that on top of the whipcream layers. Mmm Mmm Good!

  68. Your trifle looks delicious! And soo easy. I did a slightly more involved trifle, with my messed up cake – http://yumsiliciousbakes.blogspot.com/2009/05/when-life-give-you-smashed-up-cake-you.html

  69. This is great! Messing up a cake sounds like something I can do…since my baking skills are less than perfect! I use my trifle for another yummy dessert.
Layer brownies, bananas, strawberries, and cool whip…OH GOOD STUFF!!
Going to try the messy cake dessert soon!

  70. Oh my!

  71. I make this all the time, with one minor addition – crushed Oreos in every layer (on top of pudding and cool whip). It is a huge hit every time!

  72. I think I may actually bake a chocolate cake just to make this! So yummy!

  73. ok. Seriously. When did you stop making those cakeballs? Because I got so tired of seeing just that (like hearing a popular song, over and over and over and over again) that I left off coming to your site to see what's new. I wasn't feeling very inspired any more, but I was at cakewrecks and saw the fathers day things you made, decided to see if it was worth try to come back here regularly, and I notice you have been doing OTHER things besides cakeballs for a while now! WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME!?!?! j/k . But seriously, thank you for varying your stuff a bit more and inspiring me once again to go bake something with my neglected 7 year old. (I have 18mo old twins, so it's not for lack of trying!). *hugs* thank you!!!!

  74. Looks delicious!! Perfect solution. Maybe I need to mess up something this week, too! :)

    Rachel S

  75. The same day you posted this, I had made a miserable batch of fudge, and then tried to resurrect it into a brownie/cake sort of thing. That got over baked and was rock hard. But your post had me convinced I should try to make this work somehow and it worked! http://shimmycocopop.blogspot.com/2009/06/half-baked.html and http://shimmycocopop.blogspot.com/2009/06/w_28.html

  76. Wow- that looks great! What recipe did she use for the pudding and cake?

Did you know Cake Wrecks featured your burger cake (as a GOOD cake, not a wreckie- don't worry!) in a Father's Day post?

  77. Oh YEAH!

  78. I was all happy to see something I can actually make from your blog – usually I just read and dream of making.

My favorite Trifle is similar to this.

But I fold in the whipped cream and pudding. But also add toffee bits and caramel sauce and condensed milk inbetween the layers.

  79. My family does this all the time… except for we call it "better than sex cake" hehehe We layer Choc cake, cool whip, toffe bar crumbles, and we layer it twice. IT IS DELISH!!!!

  80. Looks delicious!!

But where's the layer of beef sauteed with peas and onions????

    (Name that reference!)

  81. Great idea! Thanks for sharing it. Such a talented family…

  82. Yum, yum yummyness! Wow I can't wait to mess up a cake! Maybe this afternoon!

  83. Sprinkle in some toffee bits (or other candy bar: Snickers, Butterfingers, etc) and you've got a masterpiece!

  84. You are so funny! The dessert sounds delicious – can't wait to make a mistake on purpose by accident??!! LoVe YoUr BlOg!

  85. looks deelish!! i would need to throw some crushed up scor bars in there for added calories!!

  86. That looks absolutely lucious… I do the same sort of thing with fresh berries, lemon pudding and angel food cake. So yummy…

  87. I'm soooo messing up a cake soon. :)

  88. This sound so yummy! I have to invest in a trifle bowl now!

  89. Man, that looks delicious! I like the way your sister thinks! :)

  90. That looks delicious and Oh so yummy!! I will for sure make this one someday soon. It would make a wonderful dessert after a BBQ dinner. Thanks

  91. And now I will have to try THAT! I have just recently managed not to burn/undercook a basic chocolate cake from scratch… So I will be trying cake balls next, and if I can't make those, I'll do the "mistake cake". HEHE.
What smart cookies you both are!

  92. This looks great buuuuuut ….. I'm new to Bakerella and I'm dying to know what Cake Balls are. Bakerella, five stars for talent and creativity, five stars for site concept and design, five stars for your photography, and … even with only the written word, you shine bright in the modest, funny, warm and giving way you share yourself here, and it always makes my day. Thank you.

  93. Looks too delicious – I have to ask…what is cool whip? Is it like whipped cream in a can? vanessa (australia – the land without cool whip…)

  94. I did this a couple of weeks ago – only I topped it with peppermint patties! Very tasty! My guests loved it!

  95. Was it for your Birthday? If so, hope you had a great day!

  96. omg yum….

  97. Looks yummy! Whenever I see a trifle though, I can't help but thinking of the Friends episode where Rachel is making dinner and the pages of her cookbook stick together and she makes a trifle with meat and all sorts of other stuff that doesn't belong together at all! :)

    Thanks for the giggle!

  98. That looks fabulous;) My mom has been making it for years but uses brownies and toffee bits- yum!

  99. Hi mmmmmmmmm that loos delicious!

  100. I have actually made this too and it is sooo good.

:) thanks for reminding me that I want to eat it again!

  101. It's official. You can't post anymore. All of your posts make me want to run headlong into my kitchen and concoct something wonderful, chocolate, and delicious! (And my hips can't take it anymore!) :D

Love the blog… one of my favs.

  102. This looks delicious! Mistakes always taste better!

  103. I make trifles all of the time. I make a chocolate brownie one last night with peanut butter chips in it. I also made a berry one for father's day. It is on my blog… Delicious!

    http://journeytowardsdomestication.blogspot.com/

  104. yum!! I've been craving chocolate pudding & cake all week & this just made me want to go make this!!! I can't wait to try it! :)

  105. Very cool! I'll have to try that!

  106. this looks great!! I think it would be super cute to add a top layer of oreo "dirt" for a kids birthday treat!! I wish I had a sister!! haha

  107. I just bought a SWEET triffle bowl just the other day and when it arrives I think this will be its maiden dessert!

I got it from Pampered Chef and it has a removable bottom and a plastic lid- how awesome! Of course since it was PC it was an arm and a leg but I like to think of it as an investment :D

  108. I *heart* trifle…

And that's all that needs to be said, isn't it?

  109. Oh my gosh..I JUST had this last nite at Bunco. The host served this in a big margarita glass..and instead of cake, she used brownies..OH MY GOD….i thought I died and went to heaven…YUUMMMMMOOOOO

  110. Adding health bar pieces to it would make it even better!

  111. I just made my yummy noise! Dang, that looks good!

  112. I love to make trifle. My husband is diabetic and this is a dessert I can make that even he can have guilt free. I use sugar free pudding and usually I use angel food cake. You can go nuts and put all kinds of fun things in it. No matter what you do it looks yummy when you get done.

    Anne

  113. yum, I make something similar but with brownies instead of cake and add peanut butter in with the chocolate pudding

  114. Looks yummy!

There's nothing better than a happy accident in the kitchen.

  115. add some toffee bits and its duper yumm-o! now i need to get a trifle dish…

  116. I have a similar recipe I do on purpose :).. but I add Amaretto to the pudding, include fruit in the layers, and use fresh whipped cream.

I love to see your variations though and follow you daily on your new creations!

  117. Whaaa ! Je vais en rêver toute l nuit !!

  118. I saw someone who cut twinkies in half and put the open ends against the trifle bowl, layering with strawberries and chipped cream. It looked so beautiful. Pound cake is popular.

  119. I want all my messed up cakes to look that delicious !!!!

  120. YUMMY!!!

  121. My mother made something similar with chocolate mousse instead of pudding.. called it death by chocolate. So freaking good.

  122. "Accidentally mess up your cake on purpose by mistake." haha I love it! This looks so so yummy. I will definitely have to try this next time a bake a cake mistake! :)Thanks!

  123. I wish you had this 2 weeks ago. i was doing my 1st ever wedding shower cake. I had the same problem with my 1st cake as your sister. I started all over and got it done in time. Luckly my family loves cake no matter how it lookes. I threw some icing on the bigger pieces and it was gobbled up. it would have been awsome to try this out with the mess i had.

  124. I've made a similar trifle, but added kahlua and toffee pieces. yummmm……..

  125. oh so yummy, going to have to try it myself :)

  126. Looks like a delicious accident!

  127. Yum! And should we be wishing you Happy Birthday or something? Was there a reason she was making you a cake??? :)))

  128. Mmmmm I love trifle! I like to add a layer of frozen raspberries. I mix the Cool Whip with the chocolate pudding and then for the white layer I mix some Marshmallow cream with some softened cream cheese. And of course you have to throw in the candy of your choice (I usually use Junior Mints – sounds weird with the raspberries I know, but it is actually very good). I may have to try the Heath bar though because that sounds like it is a favorite. I mix the candy into the chocolate pudding.

  129. decadent!

  130. WOW, that looks awsome!! I just came across your blog and LOVE it. I am planning on making the "Hamburger and Fries" for my 5 year old son's birthday party next week.
I just checked your blog out and look forward to seeing what else you have in store for us. I was wondering, do you have a "home made Recipe" for oreo cookies? I was just wondering if you had one that you would be willing to share. I would love to make those but don't have a recipe.Just thought I would ask. I look forward to keeping up with your blog. Thanks for sharing all your ideas.

  131. oh good lord. I want to inhale that right now.

  132. I do this ON PURPOSE with brownies and I also add in crushed Heath bars into the layers! It's called "Death by Chocolate" and what a way to go! Yum!!!

  133. Oh, that looks so good! If you could get the recipe from her, I would love that! It looks sooo good! Lol! I loved your #1..too funny! =;D

    Blessings!
    ~Miss Rachel~

  134. yum. i wish i had some of this right now

  135. Yummmm I have had these before but you add candy pieces of reeses or butterfingers or oreos just whatever your fancy and it makes it even Yummmier! Think I may just need to bake… I mean mess up.. a cake today. :)

  136. Hello to the Baking Queen. I was wondering if you've ever made any sports/ball cupcake pops?! I'm thinking about doing a ball themed birthday party for my son's first and wondered if you had any inspiration for me! I've got the smiley face pop recipe post to go from, but was thinking the soccer ball, etc might be very time consuming? If you have any tips, I'd love some! Thanks!! :)

  137. This is a great idea for any ingredients you like, I also make something similar but with angel food cake, whip cream, vanilla pudding, and butterfinger crumbles!!! Love these Trifle Desserts!

  138. This is my son's Favorite dessert! But I use brownies instead of cake add layers of. Cool whip, chopped TWIX bars and Carmel sauce! The. Twix candy adds some crunch, the brownies add chewiness, the whipped topping and pudding keeps it light and cool, and the carmel sauce. . . Well what's not better with a little. Carmel!

  139. Oh my! I hope she still used the chocolate chips, I would have. Altough I like one person's idea of adding crushed candybars and yet another of decorating the top with curled chocolate. I definitely have to make this!!!! What a great mistake.

  140. I've been making this for years. I call it Cake Scrap Dessert. I use the tops of cakes after I level them when making a wedding cake. Whenever I've taken it to a church potluck, the dish is scraped so clean I almost think someone resorted to licking it!Try crumbling up some candy bars in there. (My favorite: Butterfinger.) Or get fancy and use a vegetable peeler to shave a Hershey bar and cover the top with chocolate curls.

  141. That looks delicious!!! I just added "trifle bowl" to my list of things to get at the store! ;o) Can't believe I don't already have one!

  142. oo I love it when messed up things turn out good anyway….I just found you blog and am so excited! I made my hubby stay up late with me to look through all your past blogs and am so excited to try making cake pops soon! Thanks for the great posts!

  143. that looks SOOOOO yummy!!! that's a great idea too. i'm also really glad you quoted Tim Gunn ;)

  144. I think with the chocolate craving my baby girl seems to be having all the time this might be fabulous! Except, I think I'll toss in some chocolate chips… who doesn't love chocolate chips!?

Thanks for the idea, I have a *gasp* unused trifle bowl. =X

  145. I love trifle and this one looks so good! YUMMY :O)

  146. I've been making these for years and they are so delicious. And it all started with a messed up cake too! I love the chocolate, and also do a yellow cake, peaches and whipped topping trifle. Yum!

  147. Now THAT'S innovation!

  148. Mmmm that looks so delicious!

  149. Ooooh, yummy!

  150. I agree with the Heath bar comments, but I use brownies instead of cake. The chewy brownies with the pudding can't be beat!

  151. I make this, but I prefer it made with brownies, they stand up better to the pudding and whipped cream without getting soggy. And, I too, use toffee. I like to sprinkle mine with mini chocolate chips and Heath baking pieces between the layers. It's a real favorite 'round these parts.

  152. ed to make this all the time when I sold Tupperware. We used the Largest Rock N Serve we had and called it "Death by Chocolate." Want to make it even yummier, add a can of cherry pie filling for Black Forest, YYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

  153. I have a recipe like this called "Punch Bowl Cake." Just add some crushed Oreos between the other layers (mint Oreos are even better) and YUM, YUM!!

  154. Delicious! Try sprinkling the cake with Kahlua and adding crushed Skor bars (Heath bars in the US) over the pudding layer – it's heavenly.

  155. I had a similar thing happen to me. tried to make a chocolate jelly roll and it fell apart so I took the pieces plus the marshmallow filling I made for the jelly roll and layered with a jar of fudge sauce. I called it "Chocolate Marshmallow Surprise". It was a surprise when you were expecting the cake roll!

  156. Yummmmmy yummmmmmy yummmmmy… I think one of this days I'm going to forgive that boring step of buttering my mold before baking a chocolate cake and then… Mmmmuahahahahahaha… Enjoying this amazing dessert. I'm getting older, you know and my head and mind are not as sharp as always, It's easy to forget things like that. ;-)

  157. What a wonderful mistake!

  158. That looks so wonderful. I'm going to look forward to my next "mistake." though you could use whipped cream instead of cool whip?

  159. wow, wow, and more wow! excuse me but I have to let a cake fall right now!

  160. I LOVE my trifle bowl. It makes an easy recipe look so fancy-schmancy! Thanks for the yummmmmmmmmmmmy reminder – I'll have to go dig mine out of my cupboard now.

  161. Oh man, I want some.

  162. mmm chocolate trifle!

  163. oh goodie! cake i can play with!
    (and then of course, eat)

  164. It looks fantastic to me! And I love me some chocolate.

  165. Oooo yum! I made a vegan trifle last year and it was SO much work i havent made one since, but it was sooo yummy :)
It was certainly a great idea of your sisters to turn the mishap into such a masterpiece!

    Rose

  166. This is definitely my favourite way of using up cake scraps – I discovered it after making a topsy turvy cake, which involved lots of trimming. I like mine with custard and fruit. :-) Mine generally don't look that classy, though.

  167. That does look absolutely delicious!!!!!!

  168. I crumpled up heath bars on top! Oh yeah!

  169. YUMMMMMMMMM.

    I need some cake now!!!!

  170. We call that Death by Chocolate and use chocolate mousse instead of pudding and layer in some crushed Heath candy bars – to die for!!!!

  171. Mmmm, reminds of what my sister makes: she adds score bits, and butterscotch pudding, and turns it into a caramel dream.

  172. This is the best! The only thing I do different is I add chopped Reeses pnut butter cups. YUMM!! We have done it with fruit. The possibilities are endless!

  173. How clever of her! And how delicious this looks! I love it. laurie

  174. I love this recipe, instead of cake I use the dry edges from brownies. I save them each batch I make.

I did screw up a homemade cake and crumbled it into a bowl. I melted the frosting and poured it on top and called it bowl cake. It was yummy served warm.

  175. Definitely looks delicious! :)

  176. If this was for your birthday….Happy Birthday! If not, how sweet of your sister to make you a cake just 'cause!
    Thanks for sharing the yummy!

  177. Thank goodness it's almost bedtime here because I have cool whip and pudding in the fridge and a cake mix in the cupboard…if it were earlier in the day that picture would have tempted me big time.

  178. What a beautiful "mistake"! It looks absolutely delicious! I'll have to try this the next time I wreck one of my cakes.

  179. I just added, "accidentally screw up chocolate cake", to my to-do list for tomorrow. :)

  180. Yum! I make this with vanilla pudding, angel food cake, strawberries and blueberries layered. There is also one you do with devils food cake, chocolate pudding, cool whip and your favorite kind of candy bar chopped up

  181. chocolate pudding, the one that comes in a box?

I love this dessert there´s a deli here that sells this but instead of pudding and cool whip they use jam (raspberry or apple) and chantilli (sp??) on top… delish!!

  182. Mmmmm, some people are so creative!

  183. I agree with the comment about adding crushed up Heath bars (or just add toffee bits)!!! Yummy! We call it Death by Chocolate!!!

  184. Oh yum! I just love it when mess-ups turn out so deliciously wonderful!

  185. Love it!!

I think I would have thrown some cakeballs in anyway…..you know…just to make sure there was enough chocolate. :)

  186. This is so good!!! And theyre right about the Heath bar- it's so good with it!!!! It's light enough that you forget how much you really ate!

  187. Oh I love this!! :)))You made me smile! :)

  188. Oh, that looks so good! I will have to make a mistake soon too… :)

  189. I love Trifle and that looks delicious – I make mine with Chocolate Fudge pudding for one layer and vanilla for another – so it goes like this – cake, vanilla pudding, whip cream, crushed skor bar, cake, chocolate pudding, whip cream skor bar – yum!!!!

  190. This looks like a great recipe..I can't wait to try it! Isn't wonderful when cooking "mistakes" turn into something wonderful? May I recommend the pampered chef trifle bowl? I LOVE this trifle. It's great because the base comes off for easy transport, and so that the leftovers (if there are any) can easily be stored in the fridge. It also has a lid. You can find it on my website:

  191. Add in some crushed up Heath bars, and it is wonderful!

Also, you can add a bit of Baileys into the cake after it is baked; before you make the layers!

  192. I did this with lemon when I had an accident and also with strawberry (on purpose) and modeled it after death by chocolate. You can check them out here:

    Death by Lemon
    Death by Strawberry

  193. Yum! That might be a great cool dessert for our hot weekend.

  194. My Grandma taught us to do this exact same thing but after you layer the cake, pudding, and cool whip you add a crunched up Heath Bar (Toffee). SO GOOD!!!

  195. A friend of mine has this same accidental "recipe" She calls it "messy-cake". The only difference is she crumbles up those chocolate toffee bars (like Skors or Heath) and tosses those in there for a little texture. Also so delish.

  196. mmmmmmmmmmmmm

  197. i wish you had better pictures! but form what i do see it looks yummy (:

  198. Yum, that looks absolutely delicious! I'll definitely have to give this a try soon. The whipped cream and putting combination sounds perfect for a hot summer's afternoon.
