Got milk? I hope so…

…because you’ll want some with this one.

Peanut Butter Cup Cake

See what happens when I crave chocolate. I’ve been waiting to make this cake after seeing the recipe in a magazine. It’s based on a mix, and has buttermilk and peanut butter cups added to it. The frosting is made from dark chocolate, peanut butter and heavy cream.
What more could you ask for?

Peanut Butter Cup Cake

…maybe that tall glass of milk.

While you contemplate, here’s the same Peanut Butter Cup Cake recipe online.

And here’s what I did different:
• Baked it in two 6″ cake pans instead of the recommended 9″
• Made 6 cupcakes with the leftover batter.
• Used twice as many peanut butter cups. I went a little crazy with the extra and used them on top of the cake.
• Also, I didn’t let it set for an hour in the fridge like recommended. I couldn’t wait that long.

As a side note, I found the dark chocolate in the grocery store. It was the new Starbucks brand that’s been advertised lately on TV.

Peanut Butter Cup Cakes

And if you find that double chocolate and peanut butter just isn’t enough, try it heated a little and served with vanilla ice cream. I did, and it fixed my craving… for now anyway.

Peanut Butter Cup Cake

UPDATE: The recipe link no longer works, so here’s the recipe adapted from Family Circle Magazine.

Peanut Butter Cup Cake
Yield: one 9-inch layer cake

Peanut Butter Cup Cake

Prep Time 1 hour
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 devil's food cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups chopped peanut butter cups (plus more for garnishing - I used 2 bags)
  • 8 oz. dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat two 9-inch cake pans with non-stick cooking spray. Line with wax paper and coat paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat cake mix, eggs, buttermilk and vegetable oil on low for 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 2 minutes. Scrape down sides after 1 minute. Fold in 2 cups of the chopped peanut butter cups.
  3. Pour batter into pans and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool cakes completely.
  4. Place chopped dark chocolate in a medium bowl. Bring cream just to a boil and then pour over chocolate. Whisk until chocolate melts. Add peanut butter and whisk until smooth.
  5. Trim each cake layer so the tops are flat. Place one layer on a cooling rack and pour 1 cup frosting on top. Spread evenly with a spatula. Add second layer and pour remaining frosting over top and sides of cake. Smooth out with spatula.
  6. Allow frosting to set for a minute and gently press remaining chopped peanut butter cup pieces all over top and sides of cake. Place in refrigerator for about an hour to set. Remove and serve.

  8. Bakerella! Thank you for this cake! I want to make it as cupcakes for my sons birthday next weekend. Suggestions or tips on making sure they come out right?

  18. I saw this link on your website, and I just HAD to make this cake over the weekend. I went out and specially bought the 6″ cake pans (since I didn’t have any) as well as all of the ingredients. Everything tasted absolutely delicious, but I found that the cakes sort caved in on themselves when they were cooling. When you take them out of the oven, do you let them cool completely on a wire rack before removing from the pans, or do you remove them right away? I ended up taking two cupcakes, mushing them up with some frosting, and “filling in” the holes in the sunken cakes. No one really knew, and like I said, it was absolutely delicious! Would love you advice on how to avoid the cakes sinking in when they’re cooling.

  19. WHAT? Where do you get his stuff from! I made this Friday night. OMG You are awesome. The last piece is calling me…… Thanks! Keep baking!

  46. This link will not open up for me. Is there anyway you can post this recipe please?

  47. I made this cake a couple days ago, and it seemed a little dry. Any suggestions? Did I just bake it a little too long? When warmed up in the microwave for about 10 seconds, it is gooey and delicious.

  48. This cake was amazing…Not that it needed it, but I used dark chocolate peanut butter (“I love Peanut Butter Co.” brand) in the icing. Ice cream was definitely necessary to cut the rich taste.

  49. french kiss – it as about 2/3 full. Not more than 3/4 full, though.

  50. So beautiful! I would love to make these in cupcake form for my boys this week. How full did you fill the cupcake liners? Thanks for an amazing, inspiring, scrumptious blog!

  51. dishesanddiapers – maybe you overbaked.

    bakingforthecure – thanks

Anonymous – I followed the recipe amounts for the cake and then I think I used another bag for the decoration.

Marie @ Make and Takes – it’s yummy!

  52. Ahhhhhh! I can’t know about this! Too good! I think a moment on the lips is worth the lifetime on the hips with this one!!!

  81. Leah – maybe your chocolate wasn’t hot enough and the two were not able to blend together enough. If it happens again, just cover it with more peanut butter cups.

    yolanda – good, huh!

Amber – me too! I think you’ll like it.

  82. Oh my sweet goodness! My mouth is watering and I HAVE to try this recipe! It looks divine. I adore peanut butter and I’m obsessed with chocolate. YUM!

  84. Bakerellla: I made this amazing cake last night for my Top Chef Finale Party, and it definitely was a hit! The only problem I had was that my frosting wasn’t quite as smooth as yours, it turned out a bit grainy once I added the peanut butter. Any suggestions for next time?

  85. janel – great, I’m glad it worked for you. And actually, I’ve just recently become a fan of dark chocolate. Now, I even get my m&ms in dark chocolate too.

    Jess – thanks

Sarah – no, but you could probably just use a recipe you already like and add the pb cups to it.

    Jaina – I think you’ll like it.

Laurel – I know, I had to take some to work so I wouldn’t eat it all.

Deshona – Wow, they gave up ice cream? They did like it. Yay!!!!!!

    Cooked
this cake yesterday for hubby’s b-day! WOW!!! Lets just say it was the best cake we ever ate!!! The cake it self was amazing!!! And to top it off the frosting wow!!! My kids loved!! They even put there ice cream to the side!

I did jump the gun…and frosted WAY to SOON after it came out. I tried to put it in the fridge to cool on wire rack while I made frosting. So my extra peanut butter cups melted before I could cut the cake.

So it made it a little messy…BUT….messy is always better!

THANK YOU so much for this cake…we loved it! Cant wait to try more of your stuff. Wish mine came out as beautiful as your…but next time!

  87. I made this cake last weekend…it was amazing but I made my boyfriend take it with him when he left because it certainly wasn’t helping my diet at all. Thanks a ton!

  88. That looks absolutely divine, can I move into your kitchen? Haha. I’ll have to try that recipe sometime, it looks and sounds delicious!

  89. That looks AMAZING!! I’m definitely making those. Love your blog!

The recipe calls for a box mix, what if I wanna make it without the box mix ie: from scratch. Do you know how should I measure the ingredients?

  90. Holy goodness! That looks so yummy…my husband would just love this kind of cake! It is so pretty too. Love it!

  91. Thank goodness it was our anniversary on Saturday…it made for a great excuse to make this mouth watering beautiful cake. Thank you for loving dark chocolate as much as we do. (We even found “The Dark Knight” dark chocolate reese’s PB cups…score!) Thanks for an amazing anniversary treat.

  129. Bakerella,
I am hosting a bridal shower in july- do you have any suggestions for a dessert. I am going to serve the cupcake bites, but can you think of something I could pair it with? Thank you!

  130. Me again. Quick question. I want to do the 6″ and the cupcakes, too, but I was wondering what temp you put the oven at for each? Is it the same as the recipe? Thanks!! Lisa

  131. This looks amazing! Although I fear my jeans won’t fit the day after this enters my kitchen! It looks worth it though ;)

  132. After I saw this cake on Flickr I was hoping you would post the recipe! I’ve been dreaming about since!

  133. Oh. My. So rich, so delicious. This could be what heaven is like in my book.

  134. Woah…that looks intense. I know a certain someone in my home that would go wild over this.

  135. I think I would go into a coma! I can’t wait to try it! :)

  136. Oh. My. You are relly like a chocolate fairy-Godmother or something.

  137. you’ve been tagged!

  138. I’m thinking I should put a link on my blog, saying to come here to see everything on my *to make* list. Another winner looking recipe. Better looking then the other one on-line! I think fathers day would be perfect! Thanks.

  139. Oh my…my husband would think he had died and gone to Heaven! I’m going to have to make this for Father’s Day.

  140. Wow..this is like the ultimate “he dumped me” cake ..>_>
Anyway, I was looking at your cake ball recipe, and I wanted to stick a stick through it so that they look like lollipops…is the chocolate bark thin enough for me to dip in the cake with the stick in it, without the bark sucking my ball off? LOL man that sounds weird but yeah..>_> then i can decorate with sprinkles and stick in a bag :D cause i think dipping it would use less chocolate perhaps, and it seems easier than rolling..
    Thank you!

  141. Oh, my! I think if you look for Yummy (dictionary), this photo should be there.

  142. Forget the indulgent chocolate body wrap, this cake is all I’ve dreamed of! You are amazing Bakerella!

  143. Oh my gosh!! How delish! My family would love that. I have to make it.

I got the “Hello, Cupcake” and started making the butterflies today. They are coming out pretty cute, but they dry fast, so it’s tough to get the pattern before they set. Any tips? Will send photos if you are interested.. That book is amazing. Thanks for the recommendation!
    Lisa

  145. Wow, it’s hard to go wrong with this flavor combination. I need to get myself a 6″ pan. It’s so cute!

I bet this cake would work well with the Mini Peanut Butter Cups found at Trader Joe’s, not to mention speed up the process of making these a bit.

  146. I am thirsty just looking at it! I am TOTALLY making this one!

  147. Your cake looks way better than the cake in the original recipe!

    YUM!

  148. This looks super yummy, i noticed our names have alot in common =D

  149. Wow, you’d definitely need a milk chaser for this one! Looks amazing.
    New Guest Writers Needed
    06/03/08 @ 07:00:35 am, by Kate Hopkins 200 views • Categories: Announcements
It’s that time of the year again, where Accidental Hedonist looks for writers who wish to expand their repertoire. The goal here is to both provide exposure to new food writers,.

I’m doing things a little different this time. As more money has come in, I now can afford to add two more writers for a grand total of three.

Requirements? First, you must have your own blog to promote. Second, you should have a backlog of content that I can read in order to get a good idea on your writing style.

If you wish to put your name in the hat to be considered, and can promise to write one post per week for six months, send me an e-mail at Kate AT accidentalhedonist DOT com.

  155. Do you bloggers know what we would do for just ONE bite of cake like that in prison?

Well, I do. We would KILL for it. I was locked up and treated like an animal because I sold a little packet of “meth” to an undercover cop in Florida (my mother, “Chiff0nade” put me up to it).

Now that I am free on parole, I am going to attempt to try your recipe and make up for a LOT of lost time.

    Thanks!

  156. oh Yuuuummmmmmyyyyy! A def. must try! The only thing is that with it getting so hot now, sometimes super choc. seem s a bit too much. Do you have any light or fruity dessert ideas?

  157. yummy! You are so good at this!I just discovery your blog!=P

  158. Yours looks way better than the actual recipe’s picture. All those peanut butter cups…oh my!

  159. That looks soooo delicious looking! Fabulous good Bakerella!

  160. I’m usually pretty moderate – look at the blog, read the recipe, get a sense of level of difficulty – none of that happened – there was a voice that said “tag…go directly to tag, do not read recipe”… how scary is that!!!

  161. Yummo !

  162. You are insane in the best way possible. This looks awesome!

  163. omg your cake is amazing!

  164. this is above and beyond OUTRAGEOUS. You’re amazing!!!! Oh my…

  167. I am in awe. Literally.
My mouth is still hanging open in pure amazement. You are so good at EVERYTHING!

  168. nothing better than peanutbutter and chocolate.

  169. Loved your post. That cup looks OUT of this world, and I am a PROFESSIONAL PASTRY CHEF who graduated from Peter kump’s Culinary School in Brooklyn,

Yeah, it might go to the hips, but when your butt is the size of mine, what difference does it make?

Besides, my 450-pound BF “Big Bear” loves big butts.

  170. Holy cow – even at 7:00 in the morning this looks amazing and oh so tempting! I thank you for the recipe… but my hips don’t :)

  171. What more could I want? A personal trainer to work that off. BUT! It’ll be soooo worth it. I’m almost afraid to make it. I just might LOVE it.

  172. It’s just not fair! Every time I think you’ve out done yourself and there’s no way you’ll top that you come back with another amazing creation! I’m still working on your other recipes/creations. I can’t keep up, let alone come up with something original! Guess I’ll add this one to the list.
    :-)Ingrid

  186. Does your blog have insurance? My laywer will be in contact with you soon to discuss the bill for fixing my keyborad. It got ruined because I was drooling so much after seeing this cake. So it’s your fault I guess!…
