Cute as a button

Candy Buttons

No, I haven’t taken up sewing. (Not yet anyway.) These adorable little buttons are all candy.

And, umm… they are like handmade.

Not by me, but remember my crazy talented, cupcake fanatic friend, Julie?

She made them for a friend’s baby shower using a fab tutorial from Bake it Pretty.

Candy Button Display

They are just about the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

Candy Buttons

The tutorial even includes a pdf for the labels so you can print them out at home and make your own packaging.

Julie made yellow, pink, green, orange and blue buttons with colored candy melts.

Just melt the candy and pour into a button mold. Let them dry and pop them right out.

Place them in small plastic bags and attach the labels. Just fold them in half and staple them together.

Candy Button Display

Or, if you’re crazy like Julie, then you make the labels work with your own wooden custom candy button display that your awesomely talented husband built for you.

Yeah, I’m sucking up in case he reads this and wants to make one for me, too.

So, instead of folding the labels in half, you can fold them in thirds. Two-thirds in front and one-third in the back so you have enough room to use a hole punch on the labels without messing up the graphics. And then just use a little double-sided tape to attach the labels to the bags.

Candy Buttons

Easy and like I said… cute as a button.

Onesie Cookies

Julie also made these onesie sugar cookies for the shower. I’m gonna work on her to get this recipe because they were really good.

Okay, back to buttons…
Here is the Candy Button Tutorial from Bakeitpretty.com.

Check out the site when you have some time. Cute stuff for baking AND for decorating!

Guess what else…?
The guys that run the site gave me a gift voucher code to shop at their store last year. I forgot I had it until Julie showed me these buttons and I remembered the email they sent me. I decided that since I had not used it yet, I wanted to give it away to one of you guys. Hopefully it still works. And if not, I’ll buy a new one for you. K?

  1. WOW! pick me!

  2. The crispness of the winter air makes me want to bake, and bake, and bake some more! And there’s absolutely nothing better than making something pretty and sharing it with the people you love!

  3. My friend and I have a new business — Just Pie! I’m in charge of “pretty” from the pie crusts to the decorations. Our recipes are the greatest because they’re our grandmothers’.

  4. Hard choice, but I think I would have to say making things look pretty. It really does make them taste better!

  5. Hmm….tough call. I like the baking part of it, but I think the creative part of making them look pretty is even more fun!!!

  6. OOOoh I love trying to make them look pretty…keyword is trying! hehe.

  7. I like baking treats, I have tried to make them look pretty, but well…I’ll have to keep trying.

  8. I love to bake sweets and eat the dough :)

  9. Those were so cute! And what a fun giveaway!! I have just found a new love for baking and I always love to try and make the finished project beautiful! :)

  10. Baking them! I eat them too soon so there’s no need for them to look pretty!

  11. I think I like eating them most of all…but that wasn’t the question, was it?!? I like baking a lot. But I worry the whole time until it is out of the oven. Decorating it, though…that is very satisfying. I love making things over the top and a bit quirky. My favorite was a huge cake cut into a flamingo shape and given to a flamingo addicted friend for her birthday. It was just so much fun to decorate in an outlandish cartooney way. Especially the long neck. Her reaction…well (I have to say it…) that was just the icing on the whole experience!

  12. I love baking sweet – and it better taste good. I am just beginning to get semi-ok at making it look pretty! I wish I was better!

  13. I love to bake, but I **LOVE** to make it pretty!

  14. I don’t think I can choose! I love to bake, but I really like making it look pretty! So, I’d have to pick both!

  15. Now these are amazing! I love baking and i LOVE this idea. Such smart ladies and I am very thankful that there is a tutorial. I am headed over there right now to check everything out

  16. Can I choose eating them? I like baking them better, because even if they look bad, they still usually taste great! I always run out of time to really make them look pretty.

  17. I always choose tasty over cute when I cook. But I appreciate the cuteness achieved by others!

  18. I think I enjoy baking them more. When I have someone else watching my kids and I have plenty of time I like to pretty them up but for the most part that doesn’t happen so I enjoy the baking more. :)

  19. I like eating them! Oh wait, that wasn’t an option! :-)
I like baking them the best.

  20. Does eating pretty baked goodies count? I guess I enjoy the baking more than the decorating – just too time consuming!

  21. This is a tough “cookie” of a choice…LOL. I believe I’ll “rise” to the occasion and say making them look pretty:)

  22. Eating them!!! I do love baking them as I enjoy sharing my little creations with family and friends.

  23. Making them look pretty is definitely the best part!
    :)

  24. Baking…but only because I usually don’t have the patience, or the time, to make everything look pretty. Plus, I want just dig in!

  25. My grandmother told me long ago that Iike to bake so much because I like to play. So I guess making them pretty is as much fun as the baking itself.

  26. I love to bake sweets. Unfortunately, I’m not so good at making them looks pretty. But maybe, with this GC, I might succeed! Thanks for the opportunity!

  27. Making them look pretty – although I’m still trying to improve on those skills.

  28. Making them look pretty–after all, you eat with your eyes!

  29. I am more concerned w/making sweets and having them taste good than being pretty..but I would love to WORK on making them prettier!! :)

  30. Goodness…..hard to pick…..I guess my favorite part is being happy with the END result….which means not only do the baked goodies TASTE good but also LOOK good. :-)

  31. That’s such a hard question, I love both! When I’m stressed I love to bake, because it relaxes me, but never bother too much with ‘pretty’ at times like that.
On the other hand, I love a good day-long project every now and then of creating something spectacular. So the answer is: depends on my mood. :)

  32. both… but i usually eat it before the making it look pretty part

  33. I’m torn. I LOVE making delicious treats and coming up with my own recipes. But what’s the point of serving something delicious if it isn’t beautiful, too? I’m currently working on my cake pop skills (thanks, Bakerella!) but I still have a long way to go.

I just need more decorating gear, more hours in the day to “practice” and more people to share the calories with!

  34. This is definitely a hard one to pick – I love baking sweets and making sure that they taste good, as well as look good. Sometimes the things that look pretty just taste okay – and I have come to the conclusion, that the ladies like the “pretty-ness” factor, and the men just want it to taste good.

Great site, btw! It’s my first time leaving a comment and I can’t wait to try some of your recipes! :)

  35. I absolutely love those onesies – tooooooo cute. I love decorating things. I especially love creating things that are not as they seem (i.e., hamburger cage; faux fries with ketchup, etc.) What a hoot.

  36. Baking the sweets…I don’t have enough patience to do all the cute decorating, but I wish I did! I have all the stuff to make cute sweets but it takes a very long time to decorate a bunch of sweets haha.

  37. Definitely making them look pretty:) Although I do enjoy eating them too!

  38. I have to say I love the actual baking more, but making them pretty sure is fun!

  39. Most definitely making the sweets look pretty. I add drawstrings to my figures that are wearing hoodies, and dragon and flames to their tiny little clothes. I live for the details that go into making even the most simple of baking projects look amazing and lifelike, and of course pretty. I love the look when I give them to folks and they notice all the little details, the wand for the fairy, the leaves on the candy trees. Making them pretty, definitely!

  40. Making them look pretty by far!

  41. I really like making sweets pretty, but I don’t do it enough. I need more practice!

  42. Baking for sure!

  43. making the baking look pretty and eating it of course!

  44. My philosophy on cake is that it first should be delicious, and a very close second be beautiful.

  45. Hmmm probably decorating… but I get burnt out after a while and just want to be done so I can eat them! lol! These are adorable!!!!

  46. I love to bake and I’m just learning on how to make it pretty. Thanks for giving me inspiration.

  47. I love it when something tastes good looks pretty, too – but sometimes my version of pretty is more “rustic.”

  48. ooooooo…thats a tough one….Im going to go with cute and pretty! I always use fresh ingredients when making my delicious creations, but they have to look pretty in order for me to eat them! Thanks for all the work you do on your blog! I love it!

  49. I guess it depends…if I’m baking for others, then I like to really decorate things. If I’m baking as therapy (nothing like working out your stress with a rolling pin) then just the act of baking is best!

  50. what will these ladies think of next!???! super idea, super photos of it all! we LOVE you Bakerella & friends! you keep us making & baking!

  51. I love baking the most! But I would love to learn how to make things prettier…

  52. Baking them. My first concern is taste, then cuteness. Usually I can work at least some of the latter in, but if it doesn’t taste good, why would people want to eat them? Sure, I have cute stuff all over my apartment, but I don’t go munching on anything cute :)

So….. both. But if I had to pick one, then baking.

  53. for me: baking sweets =) for others: making them look pretty

  54. Those sugar cookies are so cute – I hope you can get the recipe!

  55. I enjoy baking sweets more. I eat them to quickly to make them pretty, but maybe this will help!

  56. I love baking sweets AND making them look pretty – if only I was good at both :)

  57. ooo… that’s a tough one! But i’d have to go with making them pretty, since everything looks better when decorated nicely.

  58. I just hopped over to her site… I would absolutely LOVE to win!!!! I see so many things I could use that on! (giggle)
    Thanks for the opportunity…

    sweetjeanette.blogspot.com

  59. I love baking! I also love making things look cute, but I am not very good at it, so I guess I have to go with making them!

  60. I prefer baking ’em. decorating is too difficult. but eating is the best!

  61. I love to do both when I have inspiration from you, of course :) Hands down baking sweets is my favorite, and I’m most concerned about the taste. But, I do try to make them look pretty. It’s just that sometimes I need a little help with the creativity part :)

  62. For me, the both are essencial and inseparable. The buttons are adorable!!

  63. Umm, I think making them look pretty is my favorite part….but I like them to taste good, too!
    Thanks Bakerella!

  64. Those buttons are just adorable!!! I enjoy making my treats pretty.

  65. I love baking sweets AND making them look pretty – if only I was good at both :)

  66. I like making them pretty!

  67. I love baking sweets!

  68. Baking…my treats never stick around long enough for me to even care what they look like.

  69. Oh my goodness! Those buttons are the cutest things. I love to make things that are super yummy and look cute too.

  70. Most definitely both! Although I lean a little more to the baking side – it’s so rewarding to create something delicious using just a few ingredients!

  71. I love to baking any kind of sweets. Everything you make I love to make. Thanks for all the great posts.

  72. I love making them look pretty:)

  73. I’m going to have to go with baking. However, I’m finding myself more and more drawn to making them pretty, too. I just spent a small fortune on sprinkles and luster dust this weekend!

  74. baking them, because no matter how I try it’s never pretty. Good to eat, but not pretty. :-(

  75. I love making baked goods look pretty! So much so that I hope I win the certificate so that I can buy more stuff! Although my fiance loves when I bake period.

  76. Those are sooo adorable~ I would love to make them look pretty..

  77. I enjoy baking the sweet treats more than decorating them.

  78. I LOVE Bake it Pretty !
I ordered in December and received the package in Belgium so quickly !

I also love baking sweets, and also beautiful sweets !

    I hope to win ! Thanks !

    Valerie

  79. I like baking, and it’s a bonus if what I make comes out pretty! Really though, my favorite part of baking sweets is EATING THEM.

  80. baking sweets… and then stuffing them in my mouth!! lol

  81. I enjoy baking and making it purty equally, but crazy enough I hate eating them! I am not a cake or chocolate or cookie fan, but boy do I like to make them!

  82. I love making them look pretty!

  83. I enjoy making things look pretty because lets face it, we eat with our eyes first. No one is going to want to eat something that looks disasterous. Unfortunately I’ve eaten some really pretty looking things that taste disasterous, so it’s a gamble. I can’t believe how darn adorable and creative the candy buttons are.

  84. I am a decent baker, but I really enjoy the packaging part of my treats and think I am a little better at that. I think pretty presentation makes everything taste better.

  85. I enjoy making them pretty the most!!! It’s a confidence booster when you hear everyone’s reaction to something so yummy being so PRETTY!

  86. Making them look pretty for sure! Those buttons are amazing! How can you look at those and not be inspired to do some cute vintage themed goodies? Love it!

  87. I like baking. I think I would like decorating if I was any good at it, but it never turns out that way. :)

  88. I love to make them.. no make them pretty.. not eat them!

    All of the above

  89. I would probably have to say that it’s a toss up.. but usually I’m more successful in the (attempt) to make them taste prettier than they actually look.

  90. These are adorable & those onesis cookies are so cute too!!! Thanks for the chance to win!

  91. I love baking but I can use some help with making my creations pretty.

  92. I like EATING sweets the best…. but making them pretty is great, too, and I like the baking process as well!

  93. Making them look pretty~it’s all about presentation!

  94. As a professional chef, i’ve always found great pleasure cooking, but baking, especially with my 7 y/o daughter is happiness on an extreme level! i try to make it pretty, but it’s about the taste and time spent with my daughter that rocks!

  95. Both! I love to bake, and it’s made doubly better when it end up pretty to boot.

  96. Wow. That’s a tough question. I used to own my own cake/cookie business (only closed b/c it took up too much of my time…young kids. Need I say more?), so I LOVE to make things look amazing. But I have always been a firm believer that it should taste as good as it looks. And if one has to give…I say it’s the looks. I’d much rather eat something that tastes good and looks not-so-good than to eat something that looks amazing and tastes yucky. :)

  97. Definately baking. Decorating just frustrates me. I can never make them as perfect as I want them to be! And beating the batter and creaming the butter and sugar makes me feel like I’m exercizing! It’s also a great way to relieve stress, by just beating it all away.

  98. Wow aren’t they cute? I have to say I prefer to make sweets or bake than making it all pretty, I leave that up to my best mate Nadia. When we make cupcakes together I’ll frost and she decorates. She has more of a creative flair than I do.

  99. I love making sweets, but I can NOT make cut out cookies for the life of me. I love reading your site and have tried several of your recipes. I love the smore’s cupcakes.

  100. baking them! is that nuts!? I love frosting but the rest of the stuff I can leave behind – but I DO love to make pretty things!

  101. Since I was always the kid whose art projects were a sad little mess, and that fact has carried over into adulthood, I’d have to say that I much prefer eating things to making them look pretty. I spend hours looking at pictures of beautiful cakes and cookies and wishing I could do that, but, sadly, I am lame…

  102. I love making them look pretty! But I think I’m better at baking them!

  103. Hmmm…that’s a tough one. Probably baking sweets but making them pretty is a very close second. But really, the best part is the eating:-)

  104. I love doing both! Both bring me great satisfaction!

  105. Making them look pretty! I used to just bake, now presentation is key.

  106. I love baking sweets. Making them look pretty is definitely second place, because in my house, sweets don’t last long enough to photograph anyhow! But I do wish that I had your patience for creating super cute things.

  107. Not sure if I can choose. I love making things look pretty, but the whole process if pretty dang nice. Plus, things always look better in my head.

  108. I like baking them the best, but that’s what I’m good at. I’m working on the decorating part because it’s fun but I don’t feel “good” about it yet, so I don’t enjoy it as much.

  109. I love making sweets for me taste is king…but if it can taste great and look pretty too, then jackpot!

  110. probably the decorating

  111. Oh, someday I’m going to make these!

  112. That’s so hard to decide- baking I guess but pretty is so much fun!

  113. Baking them! I’d love to make them look pretty but never have the patience.

  114. I enjoy eating the tasty treats the most!!

  115. I have to admit…I enjoy making sweets look pretty even more than baking them. I’m likely to consider a batch a failure if they look bad!

  116. Baking them! I am not talented enough to have reached the “making them pretty” stage.

  117. i love making things pretty, i still need a lot of practice though so i have a lot of baking to do first!

btw> my mom and i are helping decorate a sewing themed party for my grandma with thread & buttons in a couple of weeks- this tutorial came just in time, thanks!

  118. I love baking things AND making them look pretty– do I have to choose one? If i do, I’d choose baking things, because no matter how they look they usually are tasty!

  119. Ahhh! These are too cute!!!
I looove baking sweets, but the whole time I am waiting for them to be done I am even more excited to make them look pretty! I guess since I am an artist, that part is the most fun for me….. The only thing that can possibly top that is EATING what I’ve made or watching other people gobble it up! Yummmmmmm

  120. making them look pretty! love making people feel like their occasion deserved a beautiful baked good. of course, they have to deliver on taste, too.

  121. Making them look pretty. While I love to bake, decorating is where my heart is!

  122. I love your site!! I would have to say that I love both. I know that wasnt the option, but I really cant choose!!

  123. Baking! not so good at the pretty part yet!

  124. When I have time, and an occasion to show off, I really like making my treats look pretty. I enjoy the creative process and it’s so much fun to have a yummy edible treat that’s also cute to look at.

  125. I like the baking more. I rarely find time to REALLY make them pretty.

  126. Definitely baking them. I love it when things look pretty, but I’m not too good at it, so I bake my own when I just want to eat, and buy stuff when I really want or need it to look pretty.

  127. definitely baking them

  128. I enjoy both, but I think I enjoy baking them more than making them pretty…but it’s a close finish!! I love making them pretty, but with kids just getting the time to bake them is achievement enough, but I would love to get some things to help me make my sweets pretty…anything that saves time means I can steal a few more minutes to pretty things up!!!

  129. I am better at the baking part then making things look pretty.

  130. I love baking treats the most! I need to work on the whole making them pretty thing though :)

  131. I like making them pretty. I’ll spend a whoe day baking and decorating cookies and not eat one. Such waste, but good for my hips. At least my family and friends get to enjoy eating them.

  132. and I love making things look cute the best!

  133. I like them to be pretty, but I normally don’t have the proper tools or items to make it happen. My favorite is eating them!

  134. WOW! My husband would love for me to win this giftcard so I don’t spend 100 dollars of grocery money on these supercute cupcake supplies!

  135. I LOOOVE MAKING EVERYTHTING LOOK CUTE! I LIKE BAKING BUT THE DECORATING PART IS THE BEST!! :)

  136. I enjoy baking sweets more, I am not very good at making them pretty… yet. But I could be if I win this giveaway! Thanks for the chance!!!

  137. I love baking sweet treats. There is something very theraputic about being in the kitchen whipping up goodies. With a new little one at home I don’t often have time to prettify everything and when I do hubby has normally already eaten most of them.

  138. Baking for sure! I’m not a fussy or detailed person. You didn’t give eating them as an option though which is for sure #1!

  139. I love making them look pretty!!! I’m always looking for new goodies at the cake supply store to spruce up my sweets!

  140. I wish I was better at making them look pretty. That’s my favorite part but nothing turns out the way I want it to. Maybe I just need more practice!

  141. These are just about the most adorable thing I have ever seen! I can just see them on cupcakes and cakes decorated with them!! I would love to make my goodie look cute and delicious!

  142. Baking, definitely. I’m never patient enough to get the pretty accomplished.

  143. I like to bake sweets more. I’m not very good at decorating…wish I was!

  144. I like baking sweets. I think I lose patience making them pretty!

  145. I just made my first fondant layer cake. It was sweet and yummy! Made the fondant myself which I loved.

  146. I love baking sweets, but what I seem to love more is reading about making them pretty!

  147. I love doing both!! I enjoy baking but I love decorating also. It’s even better when it comes out pretty.

  148. I like making them pretty but with a young child to entertain, who’s not quite at the age to help me make them pretty, I’m usually stick to the making the sweets. My exception is when my 3rd graders finish a textbook, then I make a pretty sweet for them.

  149. I would say I enjoy baking the sweets best!

  150. i love everything about sweets! making them, decorating them and giving them as gifts! the one thing i don’t do is eat alot of them!! go figure!

  151. Baking for sure. I do love when they are pretty too. But even if they are plain…they can still taste good!!!

  152. I love baking but really love making them look pretty.

  153. I like making sweets pretty. It is all about the visual!!

  154. Umm….eating them?

    LOL!

I think I like the pretty part best, because I just can’t leave it at baked!

The fun starts when the baking is done! :)

  155. These are awesome! I am going to look for a button mold and make them this weekend! Thanks for sharing, you always have the coolest ideas.

  156. I think making them pretty. Love the onesies – way too cute!

  157. Hello Bakerella! I’m a first-time commenter, but I’ve been following your blog for months now and I am a HUGE fan!

It all started with those delicious pumpkin pie bites…. and it was downhill from there :)

Thank you for your sweets! And for being so sweet!

  158. Definitely enjoy baking sweets more…

  159. I like both, you eat with your eyes first, right!!!!!!!!!

  160. Baking, hands down! I always seem to fail miserably when I try to make things pretty!

  161. Baking sweets! I’m working on the making them pretty part :)

  162. I’m definitely a baker! Although I am getting better at my decorating.
Those buttons are the cutest! Wish I would have seen this for the shower my friend just had. I did take your cupcake pops and they were such a hit! The nursery is in a pink/brown cupcake theme so they were perfect! Thanx Bakerella!

  163. Definitely making them look pretty!

  164. Definitely baking them….I’m lucky if I get the chance to even try to make them pretty before my hubby or I dig in!

  165. Making them look great!

  166. making them…and wowing folks!

  167. I love to make them pretty :) I’m working on getting my courage up to attempt decorating cakes. And this week I’ll get to test my cookie prowess with decorating robot cookies for my son’s birthday. Wish me luck!!

  168. making them look pretty! although baking is one thing i can come out of the kitchen with success!

  169. It’s fun to make them look pretty!

  170. Is eating treats and option!?

I think I like making them look pretty, so fun!

  171. I love baking more that making the goods look pretty. They don’t usually sit around too long anyway!

  172. since EATING them isn’t a choice, I will have to go with making them pretty (although I am not very good at it, but I’m working on it!)

  173. My son was looking at this post with me and said “Oh mom can we do that as a craft today?” Got to love a kid who likes to bake with his mother!! BTW he is 4.

  174. making them look pretty :) although once the baking is done, I usually skip ahead to the eating part :P

  175. I prefer the baking part because making it pretty doesn’t always work out for me. ;)

  176. Baking! Nothing beats the smile on my fiance’s face when I tell him I made him something sweet!

  177. baking them is fun…BUT eating them is much better!! :P

  178. It’s a tie. I love them both. Baking and decorating…it doesn’t get much better than that!

  179. I enjoy everything about sweets, baking them, making them look pretty and then finally enjoying them!

  180. I can’t decide. I love to make them pretty but I’m really starting to enjoy the baking part as well!

  181. I love to bake sweets, but when they have to be pretty, I get nervous.

  182. Ooooh, this is a hard question! I prefer to making them pretty, however I’m more successful with the baking part. I’m working on the whole pretty piece!

  183. i have more fun making them look pretty. decorating adds that personal touch to whatever you’re making to make it a bit more special.

  184. I enjoy the baking more than the process more than the pretty-ing, but I’m always willing to try something new!

  185. I love baking sweets but making them pretty is so much fun. Those little cookie onesies were so adorable! I need to make some and crash a baby shower! LOL
    Thanks, Bakerella! : )

  186. Both really, but since mine don’t always turn out as beautiful as I’m aiming for, I guess I enjoy baking them more. I know at least that they taste good!

  187. I’d have to say baking sweets. As much as I would love to make them look pretty, I’m not very good at it!

  188. That’s hard for me too, but I love making them look pretty-especially for holidays! It’s fun how the same recipe can end up so different with decor.

  189. I like both the same. I enjoy baking and making them look pretty. I love baking cakes for my kids birthday and making them look good.

  190. Definetly making them look pretty! I thinks it’s the ability to make anything SPARKLE!

  191. I like EATING the baked goods, but if I had to choose, I would say making them look pretty. :)

  192. Decorating hands down! You would think I am a baker, but alas, I have hardley any baking supplies, but you should see how many sprinkles I have! :)

  193. Right now, the baking! I still need a lot of practice at making them look pretty :)

  194. I love baking but I love to make things pretty as well. It makes it more rewarding to me when not only does it taste good but it looks so so so pretty!
