This IS the best chocolate sheet cake ever. And I’m not just saying that because it’s the only one I’ve ever eaten. It IS delicious. And super moist and oh so chocolatey.
I’m officially in love. With the cake, not the Pioneer Woman. Well, maybe PW, too.
If you don’t know who I’m referring to (laughing as I type that), here’s her site:
I visited her and the family earlier this year at her ranch in Oklahoma and we baked cupcakes and made cake pops for some guests. Actually, she made this chocolate sheet cake recipe then for the cupcakes we used. However, we made a different frosting to decorate with so I didn’t get to experience the full effect. I don’t know what took me so long to try her complete recipe. I’m kicking myself now. It’s so easy and pretty darn quick, too. You don’t even need a mixer. Nope. No mixer. But you do need a 12 X 18 jelly roll pan. I think that’s what deterred me a little. I kept picturing a 12 X 18 cake sitting on my counter. And, well… that’s a lot of cake.
But then, a couple of weeks ago I received a surprise from the UPS guy… or girl…
It was PW’s soon-to-be-released cookbook. I was so excited to see it. I got a preview of the cover back in March and here it was. Finished. Full of Pictures. And Full of Recipes.
Including her Chocolate Sheet Cake.
That settled it. No more procrastinating. Chocolate Sheet Cake here I come.
You’ll need 2 cups flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to start. Easy enough.
Then pour on the sugar. Two cups of the sweet stuff. I like how this is going.
Melt some butter. Two sticks. Thank you.
While it’s melting, stir together 1/2 cup buttermilk, two eggs, 1 teaspoon baking soda…
And add a little vanilla. A teaspoon to be exact.
Back to the butter. Drop in four heaping tablespoons of cocoa please.
Mix that all up.
Add a cup of boiling water and stir. Let bubble for just a minute and turn then off the heat.
Then pour that over your flour, sugar and salt mixture and stir it all together.
Add the buttermilk mixture and stir until it’s smooth.
Anyone having a little deja vous here? I kinda feel like PW right about now with all these step-by step photos. But really, I couldn’t resist posting all of these pouring shots.
See… here’s another one. Look at that batter. It’s glorious.
Place the pan in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. I did 18.
And while the cake is baking, you can make the icing.
Melt some more butter. One and 3/4 sticks this time. Add four more heaping tablespoons of cocoa and stir together.
Then add 6 Tablespoons milk and one teaspoon vanilla. Here’s the only thing I did differently. I didn’t have any milk. I know… that bites. So instead I used four tablespoons of evaporated milk mixed with two tablespoons of water. I could have gone all six evaporated, but I wanted to play it safe.
Add ONE POUND of confectioner’s sugar. Thank you again PW. This is definitely going in the right direction.
Mix that all up really, really good. You can also add a 1/2 cup of chopped pecans, but I didn’t have any of those either. And actually, I’m glad I didn’t. This cake was just the way I like it. Non-crunchy.
After the cake is baked , immediately pour on the good stuff. Work the icing all over the cake, so you’ll have less spreading to do. Those little lumps in the photo are just bits of confectioner’s sugar. If you don’t add nuts, you’ll have to stir this really good to get them all out or sift your sugar first. But who has time for that when this cake is waiting.
Let the cake cool completely. Just kidding. Just dig right in.

I’ve love PW. I go to her site about every day. I’ve only made one of her recipes Apple Dumplings. Its so easy to make. I’ve made her Apple Dumplings, more times than I can count. All her recipes look delicious. Hard to choose what to make next. Thinking Olive Cheese Bread.
I just quit work a couple of weeks ago and I am loving being back in the kitchen. I cooked and baked all day today for my family. I definitely need some new recipes. We will have our 6 children home for Thanksgiving + spouses and girlfriends + 13 grandchildren. I think that adds up to 27–I will need three or 4 of these chocolate sheet cakes for Wed. evening when friends come by to see everyone..

I didn’t know Ree, so thank you for introducing us :) After looking through some of her recipes (so much to look at!! love it) i decided that my suggestion of a recipe you should make would be her Easy, Delicious (and yes, Elegant!) Pots de Creme. Mmm they look so good, and remind me of when my mom would make chocolate pudding with whipped cream for my sister and brothers and I when we were younger :) She’d put it in Peanuts coffee cups, which are still at the house, and when any of us see them we get a bit nostalgic.
So yeah, I think I’ll try making the Easy, Delicious (and yes, Elegant!) Pots de Creme as well :)

Her pineapple zucchini cake is absolutely, positively out of this world fabulous! If you have not tried it, you are missing out!
I’ve tried PW’s lasagna and wings. The wings were good but DH was horrified at how much hot sauce I wasted. LOL
The lasagna was too salty and I ended up throwing most of it out. I would definitely make it again, however, but reduce the first salt measurement and skip the second entirely. It’s easy to salt at the table but impossible to get rid of too much.
When I get around to it MM’s favourite sandwich will be next up.
The Ribeye with Blue Cheese Sauce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will melt right out of your chair it’s so thigh slapping good!!!!!!

I have made a few, including the stuffed mushrooms. Those got the most raves and disappeared the fastest of anything I’ve ever taken to a party, I think. Try ’em! Not very sweet, but definitely baked :)

Ooh, pick me! I haven’t picked up a copy yet! ;-) So far I’ve only actually tried the sesame noodle recipe (yummy!) but I’ve printed out quite a few from her blog that I’m planning on making as well.

I’ve made Ree’s pasta with vodka sauce a bunch of times, and it is TOTALLY amazing. SO good! I’ve also tried the pasta with roasted red pepper sauce, which is also super delish.

I have to say I have not had a chance to try out any of PW’s recipes due to the fact that I haven’t had a proper kitchen in the last year and a half. Splitting my time between two different households with little-to-no fridge/pantry space really kills a gal’s motivation to bake. But hopefully soon I will have a new kitchen in a new apartment where I could try all the recipes in PW’s book – I love her! Love you too. This cake will be the first thing I try.

Oh My! I absoulutly love Pioneer Woman. I started making her recipies a couple of months ago, and haven’t made one that I or my family doesn’t like. In fact, I’ve seen my husband turn his nose up a couple of times while I was making recipies of hers that used ingredients that he normally doesn’t like (like cauliflower). And every time he has sat down to eat he’s been amazed at how much he loves the recipies. Now, if I make something new he asks first if it’s Pioneer Woman’s before he tries it. We love her! (and I want this book sooooo badly)

I’ve never heard of her until today but her stuff looks wonderful! if i’m not the lucky winner i will have to go out and buy the book and make a mess in my kitchen! thank you for introducing me to her. i cant wait to try out some of her stuff, as well as trying more of your stuff too:)
I have made her Delicious Chocolate Pie of Love. It is Delicious. Awesome. I think I will make it again soon. I will buy her cookbook if I don’t win, she has some great recipes. So do you for that matter!

I have tried quite a few of PW’s recipes..They have all turned out great. The last one I made was Ranch Chicken..my husband loved it. Her Jalapeno poppers are YUMMMMY

I am in love with her site. She is so darn funny. I’ve been a faithful follower for a few years now.
Her Marlboro Man Sandwich is so good. You should try it. I don’t know if it is in the cook book, but it is on her blog. Yum.

I’ve tried several of her recipes, they are all delicious! This chocolate cake is my favorite dessert recipe. My favorite non-dessert recipe has to be the bacon-wrapped stuffed jalepenos! To. Die. For.

Oh. My. Goodness. Every single recipe of PW’s that I’ve made has been A-MAZING! If you haven’t made her cinnamon rolls yet, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING RIGHT NOW AND MAKE THEM! Other great ones to try are Penne Pasta a la Betsy (I think that’s what she called it!) and Creamy Herbed Potatoes. There aren’t even words to tell you how delicious all of it is! I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on her cookbook!! :)

LOVE her site! I don’t think I can choose just one recipe as a favorite! The Chicken Thigh Spaghetti, Stacey’s Pita Chip Baked French Toast, Apple Dumplings, her quiche… I have yet to try a recipe from there that hasn’t been a huge hit in my house!

We’ve been making this scrumptious cake down in Texas for many, many years. However, we add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the batter. It’s so yummy! So easy to make too.
I’ve checked out her sit many times but still haven’t had the couage to make anything yet.

I have read the PW for a long time (at least it seems that way!!). I love her high heels to tractor wheels story the most of all!
I haven’t tried many of her recipes, but I have tried her Huevos Ree-ohs and enjoyed them immensely.

LOVE Pioneer Woman!! I found her website when I was searching for Red Velvet Cake since I couldn’t locate my family recipe immediately after a move. I printed out that luscious looking prune cake recipe but haven’t tried it yet! I would LOVE to have that cookbook!! PLEASE! :)
I’ve tried the bacon appetizers (crackers with parmesan cheese and then wrapped in bacon) weird sounding, but oh so good. I’ve also tried her mac ‘n cheese, cinnamon rolls, migas, enchiladas and a few other things too. I’m a huge PW and Bakerella fan! Thanks!

Fried Pork Chops are to DIE for especially with a side of GRAVY. I made some potatoe bundles that were delish and I then I made Pastor Ryan’s Monkey bread…but it was off her blog! I cant wait to see what else is in that wonderful book!
I am new to PW. I just recently started following her last month and have yet to make anything. This year, I am hosting Thanksgiving and her Rosemary rolls are on my list!!

I LOVE PW and her website. I love seeing the kids working on the farm and her stories about the dogs and the cow in her garden, LOL. Amazingly, as I sit here, I don’t think I’ve made any of her recipes, although I have about a gagillion of them bookmarked! I want to try the cinnamon rolls.
