Dining Out Dessert

Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce

Here’s a little something I think you guys will like. It’s a Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce. I don’t know what made me think about this dessert, because I’ve only had it once. It was several years ago… maybe even eight. I was eating out at Applebee’s with my family and we decided to get dessert. Now, I eat out kind of often, but desserts are usually saved for celebrations. Birthdays and such. And, when I do get one, it’s usually the most chocolate thing on the menu and it never contains nuts. But on that day, it wasn’t my celebration. It was my uncle’s and I agreed to split this non-chocolate, nut-filled dessert – the whole while thinking about how much better the chocolate would be. Well, I was wrong. Way wrong. This might have even been the best thing I had ever tasted. (up until that point, anyway.)

So, if you’ve never been to Applebee’s and you’ve never tasted the Walnut Blondie with Maple Butter Sauce, that’s okay. Because, you’re in luck. I found a recipe from The Secret Recipe Blog that’s as close to the original as I remember it.

I promise you’ll like it.

Here’s the recipe.

Here are the ingredients for the blondies.

Blondie Ingredients

Mix it all up…

Blondie Batter

And, spread it all out in a greased and floured 8 or 9 inch square pan. (I used the 8 inch)

When the blondies are almost done, mix up your maple butter sauce. Here’s what you’ll need.

Maple Butter Sauce Ingredients

When the brownies are done, cool for a few minutes. Cut and serve while they are still warm.

Walnut Blondies

Put one, or two, or six on a plate. Pile on some vanilla ice cream and slowly pour the warm maple butter sauce over everything. Top with any extra walnuts.

Maple Butter Sauce

OMG!!!!!

Now, if you don’t have any ice cream in the house, don’t let that stop you from making this.

Actually, if one were to make just the blondies and the maple butter sauce, one might even want to cut up small pieces of the blondie and use the maple butter sauce as a dip. One might even end up dunking the whole thing in the sauce and getting maple butter all over their fingers that they then had to force themselves to lick off. However, I don’t know anyone like that.

Again, here’s the recipe.

And, now for a giveaway…

  17. “To Die For Bread Pudding” Recipe
Such a humble an unassuming dessert, it is elevated to the highest levels of “OMG! This is SOOOOO good!” when prepared the Famous Dave’s way!

Yes, this is a bit time consuming and not for the inexperienced or reluctant chef, but it is absolutely worth it and incredible. For the cinnamon egg bread, I use a portuguese sweet bread w/ raisins (Tony’s Bakery brand 196 Columbia Street Fall River Mass- 508-675-0015 no website, but they will ship and it freezes well!)

Famous Dave’s Bread Pudding with Plantation Praline Sauce
    Unsalted butter, room temperature
1 loaf (1½ pounds) cinnamon egg bread
    2/3 cup golden raisins
    1½ cups sugar
    4 cups milk
    2 cups whipping cream
    ¼ cup vanilla extract
8 Eggs, beaten1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    Whipped cream and ice cream
Plantation praline sauce (see recipe below)

Coat bottom and sides of 13-by-9-inch baking pan heavily with butter. Tear bread into 1-inch pieces. Mix with raisins in bowl. Lay breadmixture evenly in prepared dish, turning crust side down, as thistends to burn easily.

In bowl, whisk sugar, milk, whipping cream, vanilla, eggs and cinnamon until blended. Pour over bread mixture.

    Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Place baking dish in larger 4-inch deep baking pan. Add water to reach halfway up side of dish. Bake in preheated oven 1 hour. Remove from water bath. Let stand 20 minutes.

Cut pudding into 18 portions and put into dessert bowls. Add a scoop of ice cream(french vanilla- of course!) next to the pudding, then spoon about 3 ounces ofwarm praline sauce over the pudding and the ice cream. Top with (homemade) whipped cream if desired. Makes 18 generous servings.

    Plantation Praline sauce:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter (cube ½ cup) (divided)
    ¾ cup chopped pecans
1½ pounds light brown sugar (about 3¾ cups packed)
    ¾ cup whipping cream
    ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1¼ Cups sour cream
    ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

To make this sauce, it is very important to follow the directions carefully and to use a candy thermometer.

In large saucepan, heat ½ cup of the butter until melted. Add pecans and mix well. Bring to a boil. Cook until pecans begin to change color. Watch closely! Mixture will foam up. Add remaining ½ cup cubed butter and mix well. This will cool the pecan mixture and stop the cooking process. Remove from heat. Next combine brown sugar, whipping cream and cinnamon in another saucepan and mix well.
Cook over low heat until blended, stirring constantly. Increase heat and cook until mixture comes to 230 degrees on a candy thermometer.Stir in pecan mixture. Add sour cream and vanilla and mix well. Remove from heat. Makes 4 cups.

  45. This looks fantastic!

My favorite dessert used to be from Friday’s. They had this thing called Oreo Madness…and it was basically two huge oreos with ice cream in the middle for the filling with hot fudge, caramel, and ice cream. It was heavenly. Unfortunately, they got rid of this…so now I love the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory.

  46. Vanilla Bean Cheesecake. First, it was from TGI Fridays. Then I got a bad one one night, and it made me think maybe they had changed the recipe. I tried Cheesecake Factory’s, and it was AMAZING.

It was even amazing despite the fact that I was getting over the flu and my stomach hadn’t felt like eating much of anything. I only took a bite of my dinner, but I devoured that cheesecake.

I also (almost) regretted it later.

  61. At the end of the day I usually like to have something salty, so if I’m out and about, it’s french fries. If I’m at home, it’s popcorn. Even better is a small vanilla ice cream cone with french fries…yummmm

  62. I don't usually get dessert when we eat out. But, I do like to go out just for ice cream. Cold Stone's Birthday Cake Remix is my current favorite. I'm also a sucker for anything chocolate & raspberry. :)

  63. Chocolate cake! From anywhere! Or a cannoli.

  66. I don’t usually eat dessert when we eat out, but anything chocolate, and especially chocolates with whipped cream or ice cream, and nuts!

  67. I love the Caramel Apple Crumble at Granite City… The crust is made out of puff pastry so it’s light and fluffy, filled with apples and lots of cinnamon goodness. Then ice cream is topped on the little Apple Crumble with caramel all over the entire plate (and the plate is HUGE). I think I ate that think in about half a second. It was delicious.

  68. Thanks for posting that — it’s my mom’s favorite! My favorite is from a local Italian joint. 77. This looks delicious. Dessert is always better at home, because you can add extra ice cream :) I can’t wait to try this.

My favorite dessert is the Flaming Turtle fundue at The Melting Pot. It’s out of this world good. My husband knows to stay away from the pineapple and marshmallows, they are mine. The cheesecake is really good too, but don’t try to dip it, you’ll lose it in the pot.

But when I don’t want to get all dressed up to go out, my hubby and I love to hit Chic-fil-a for a $.99 ice cream.

  78. Although it’s not a dessert from a restaurant exactly, I’d have to go with the Chocolate Fudge cake made by Wegmans (our local grocery store). It’s deadly! julie@uppercrustcakes.com

  141. My favorite Dining Out Dessert right now is the "Oreo Pizzookie" from BJ's Brewery & Pizza in Boulder, CO…you can't go wrong with gooey chocolate cookie yumminess!

  142. This, absolutely. I’m always very sad when I go to Applebees and don’t have room for dessert.

Though, there’s a local fake-mexican restaurant that has a Chocolate Mountain Mudslide that’s pretty fantastic– hot gooey chocolate chip cookie, 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream with chocolate drizzled on top. Perfect for two people to share, and SOOO good!

  143. My absolute favourite dining out dessert is Thai mango and sticky rice. The sticky rice is soaked, overnight, in sweet coconut milk, hence a dessert I’d never make myself (I did once, that’s how I know it has to soak overnight). And it’s never that expensive in the restos, despite the labour/time-intensity of it!

  159. For sure the cookie sandwich at the Claim Jumper restaurants. There is always too much to eat after dinner so I take it with me and eat it for breakfast or a late-night snack (I’m always on vacation so I can justify it!)

  171. It’s definitely a tie between Copeland’s cheesecake with three different caramel sauces and Chili’s molten chocolate cake with chocolate sauce and ice cream.
