Super Bowl Funday?

IMG_6577

So I had an idea for using the Oreo Truffle Recipe I’ve shown before and turning those into little tiny footballs. Well, let’s just say the idea was better than the execution. I ended up doing two batches because I was disappointed with how the first one came out. Take a look…

IMG_6626

Follow the recipe for Oreo Truffles and then:

Don’t do it this way…

• I shaped the mixture into little footballs
• dipped them once in chocolate bark, let them dry
• dipped the ends in white chocolate, let them dry
• dipped the ends again in regular chocolate leaving part of the white showing on the end to form rings. I really thought this would look good because the ring would go all the way around. And since I’m not so hot at piping anyway, I thought this was a no-brainer.
• Then I piped the laces on.

Sounds like a good idea, right. Wrong. Instead of cute little footballs, I ended up with these little footblobs of chocolate.

Instead, try it this way…

• Shape the mixture into little footballs
• dip them once in chocolate, tap off extra and let them dry.
• then, just pipe the rings on each end and the laces on the top. The rings won’t go all the way around, but they’ll look a lot better
• And this way saves a lot of drying time which is great, too.

All in all, it was a fun day. They finally came out looking pretty good and thank goodness, they tasted great.

  1. Why not create a football shaped cakepop mold?

  2. I have made these for the past two superbowls… Always a huge hit… Had to double the batch because they disappear so fast!!!

  3. Ur footballs r amazing! How do u make them so perfectly shaped?

  4. Where do we ask our questions, I see no one gets answers…

  5. Can we make them into cake pops with the Oreo truffles recipe, will the stick stay on?

  6. I made these for a Super Bowl party this year! Although mine didn’t look as professional and were quite difficult to make (well, the dipping part) they were delicious and a HUGE hit! Thanks for the ideas!

  7. What would i use to pipe the stripes??!! plz help making thsese tonite for the superbowl so the quicker the better!! thanks!!

  8. There amazing I am so exicted to try them ita my grandpas 80th birthday and the super bowl sunday. Thank you Bakerella.

  9. So glad to see I’m not the only one who ended up with footblobs. I think I need to make a little more point on the ends. And Chocolate bark instead of chocolate sounds like a great idea. Melted chocolate chips are just too thick. Thanks for the tips and tricks!

  10. I will have to try this next week! One question, instead of using cream cheese, can I use frosting to mix with the oreos instead? Will that still work?

  11. I had been looking for examples of these to show my friends and I finally found yours! They look amazing. I can not wait to whip some up!

  12. Just made these for the Niners vs. Saints playoffs. They were a huge hit!

    Thanks for the idea!

  13. I love how cute these are. Think I’ll make them for Super Bowl 46!

My usual standby Super Bowl sweet…..chocolate rice Krispy treats shaped like footballs with white icing laces. I happen to have a measuring spoon almost in the shape of a football, so that gets the shape started, but I’ve also shaped by hand.

  14. Could These be made with Cake instead of oreo truffles? Thinking i’ll make these for our Football Themed Baby Gender reveal Party, So i’ll need to use pink or blue cake :)

  15. This 2008 post is a classic! I just reposted it at Gameday Style

    http://www.livingforgameday.blogspot.com

Hope to include more of Bakerella’s incredible football themed baked goodies soon…

  16. OMG!!! I am the crazy baker Mom who makes dessert every week for the pasta dinner for my daughter’s cheer squad and football team. They already LOVE oreo truffles and they will be crazy about these. Can’t wait to make these in Sept and Oct. Thanks for the idea!!!

  17. So freakin’ cute!! I’m going to make these into pops for my son’s 5th birthday party next month instead of making cake. No fuss, no muss; just happy kids! Thank you so much for an awesome alternative to cake & cupcakes!

  18. I tried to make cakeballs and it turned out horrible!! I wish I would have followed your site EXPLICITLY because then it would have worked, no doubt. Love your site!

  19. I attempted to make these. I am no good with melting chocolate so they didn’t come out great. I love the idea and will def be working on my cake pops.

    P.S. They really are delicious!

  20. I love these cute little footballs! I just made them for a superbowl party today! I hope they’re a hit!

  21. This blog really made me smile! Thanks for the “don’t” tip. I plan on making these and setting them on a football field shaped cookie cake. My husband is all into helping me plan this project and said the same thing about the stripes. They look great either way! :) Can’t wait to try the Oreo truffles for the first time!

  22. Thank you for showing us your flops and your successes.
It helps the beginner in me have hope. I love your creativity — I’m great at eating — not bad at cooking — but terrible at presentation. Thank you for your step-by-step photos. It makes me more confident in what I am doing!

  23. Where do you buy the bark coating?? Can’t seem to find it anywhere :(

  24. Wow! Here we go Steelers, here we Go! Gonna make these football truffles for Superbowl 45! Let’s go Steelers!

  25. SO making these! Thanks! Awesome idea!

  26. I love your work, you are fantastic. Since you’re not hot on piping, you might want to know that the NFL doesn’t use footballs with those white stripes on the ends, that’s only college football. Sooooo, for the sake of technicality, you may save some time the next go around :) I’m a fan of your work.

  27. Hi Bakerella!
I am planning on making these for the upcoming superbowl. I gave it a try this weekend, and did not have much luck shaping them into the footballs. Do you have any tips or tricks to getting them to look like footballs?

  28. I love, love, love all of your ideas. Just got your Cake Pops book in the mail today :) I made the owl pops for my 11 year old Niece for her birthday , what a hit they where!!!! I love your footballs and will be making them for the superbowl :) Keep Baking

    <3 Jen

  29. I love this recipe! my fiance is a football freak and Im somewhat indifferent so this is a great way for me to join in his love for football with my creativity!

  30. I tried these… they were great! only question I have is… what is the best way to dip them in the chocolate?

  31. Woohoo! We are hosting the football team from our local jr. college this Sunday. I am so excited that I stumbled upon these! Thank you for the amazing pictures, and step-by-step instructions!

  32. having 2 sons and 2 daughters all love sports they will just love this. you are so good.

  33. Of course…you think of everything!!! I made these this year for Superbowl (but with Nutter Butter cookies instead of Oreos) thinking I was the first to think of it…now I see you did it two years before me!!! Yours turned out much cuter though… :)

    Thanks for all the inspiration!!!!

  34. Well those just look scrumptious. I must make them next superbowl. My oreo truffles were a hit last time and if theyre shaped like footballs? even better!

  35. Thanks for this!! I made them for Superbowl too. They didn’t come out nearly as neatly as yours, but everyone enjoyed them nonetheless!

  36. Just made these for superbowl…a HUGE hit!! They were easy to make and tasted great!! Up next…cake pops for Valentines Day!

  37. your blog is awesome! im planning to try cake balls for valentines… but i have no clue what a chocolate bark is.. i doubt that i will findit easily here as i dont live in USA.. is it a slab of cooking chocolate? is there a subsitute for it?

  38. These were SO easy to make and super tasty. I made them for superbowl but we never made it to the part where I pipe the white icing on….we ate them all before we could get that far! Thanks Bakerella!

  39. Mine didn’t turn out nearly as neat as yours but were the hit at our church Super Bowl fellowship! I love your ideas, you make it all look so easy!!! Thanks for the step by steps and pictures!!

  40. Made these for my Superbowl party yesterday… I thought they would be more for the kids to eat, but the adults were loving them too!!! yay! Thanks! They are so cute!

  41. I made these for the first time the other night and my BF raved about them. Makes my valentines day gift and easy one this year :) Awesome idea!! Keep ’em coming :)

  42. I made these for the Super Bowl tonight and they were a big hit! I also made the Nutter Butter balls and added some mini chocolate chips. Thanks for the ideas! Keep rockin’ on!

  43. did your pics get stolen?

    http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=39863994&ref=fp_feat_1

I am glad Alex pointed this out too. If they dont have permission that is rotten!!

  44. Wow. Featured on Etsy’s front page right now? Someone selling these- and stealing your photos!
    http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=39863994&ref=fp_feat_1

  45. No, I dont like these……I LOVE them. They are soo stinkin cute. You always do such AMAZING work!!! Keep it up!

  46. you must have a very steady hands and incredibly strong fingers…just finished my first “bakerella” project …hopefully the Saints will have steadier hands than mine but I had fun “creating”…thanks for inspritation!

  47. hm. thanks for the tips Olivia I am about to start making mine. We will see how it goes!

  48. OK! Got them done! Only took about 2 1/2-3 hrs of hand molding. The easiest for me is to leave the mix in the freezer and then i did a tsp, rolled it into a ball, then used my fingers and molder the sides into points until they looked football-ish and refridgerated. After a while I was able to go back in the fridge and fix whatever I wanted. I used semisweet chips w/parafin shaved into the chocolate while melting. Parafin makes for easier dipping which I did with two forks.

  49. I LOVE these!!! I had made some Cookie Dough Truffles last night and had some of the Cookie Dough leftover. I used it instead of the cake and had a little trouble making them look “football-ish”…did you use a special tool or just your fingers? Thanks for the inspiration! I’ll share some linky love on Monday!

  50. WOW… So… I tried to make these today… had no luck, I have no clue how you got them so well shaped 3d.. mine were flat foot balls, and I had the hardest time dipping them into my chocolate… I had flat blobs… I admire your skills… and mine still look OK for the un baker eye! haha!!!! your amazing! WOW

  51. Ok, I just threw away 5 dozen foot-blobs. I followed your second set of instructions to a T, but had my usual issues with getting baked goods to look pretty. I give up, but still love you Bakerella!

  52. Cute!!! Love them!!!

  53. I am making these as we speak and I wish you were in my kitchen right now making my shapes as perfect as yours!! How did you do it? So true to football shape.

  54. I am going to attempt making these either tonight or tomorrow and was wondering if there is a dipping tip. Should I use a spoon? skewer? fingers? what works best to get the best finish. Cake pops are on a stick so they were fairly easy, any suggestions?

Also, for those who can’t find bark, Walmart also sells Almond bark in white and milk chocolate, we don’t have Kroger down here, so if you can’t find candy melts, check Walmart in the baking isle.

  55. you are an expert on dipping things into chocolate xD
so how do you dip stuff into the chocolate without the bottom getting flat when you rest it to dry, and how do you just get them to be smooth all around in general?

  56. Okay, these are just fantastic! Okay, I could say that on almost all your examples. You are a food crafter! Thanks for sharing! I’ve posted a number of links.

  57. I absolutely love this idea for the Super Bowl. And, every other idea you’ve ever had!

I can’t believe that I haven’t come across this site until today! You are amazing at what you do, to say the least!

I can’t wait to try some of these recipes! Thanks for being so wonderful :)

  58. just one more note
i searched forever yesterday and will save anyone else the trouble if you type marthastewart football template i found the cutest little football field to print and serve my oreo footballs on and i also used the vanilla oreos( my fav) they are to die for

  59. I love seeing the creative process in action. l love seeing the mistakes along with the success. The footballs turned out very cool in the end.

  60. Michelle – sure, but it might be harder to mold.

Nisha – they’ll last for several days.

Sarah – yes. bark and candy melts and candy coating are basically the same thing. The white is bark coating from Kroger.

Sara – Not really – just takes a few extra minutes.

Jane – use candy coating next time.

mary beth -several days – keep them in the fridge.

Krystal – cake – yes. cheesecake – would be more difficult

diana – tap off the excess – then you can also use a toothpick to draw a separating line.

  61. i made these for the weekend but would like to know how to not get that pool of chocolate under them after you dip and place on wax paper any suggestions i have the same problen with cake balls yours always look so perfect there has to be a trick to it

  62. LOVE this idea!!!! I think i’m goign to make some for the superbowl this sunday! Can you do this but with cake? Like can you make cake pops but form them into footballs? Can you do it with cheesecake?

  63. I tried something similar with rice crispy treats cut w/football cutter dipped and decorated. My first try looked, truly, like poop on a stick. That shape is hard to manage.

  64. How funny! I did this last year but never saw this tutorial you had up- great minds!

  65. im making these for my superbowl party this weekend! how far ahead do you think i can make them?

  66. I Love these!

  67. These are so cute. And I just found out my friends can come for some Chili and fun and I’m going to make these too. Seem easy. I’ve mastered the cake pops after a few tries. ~Chrissy

  68. Your creativity and humor astounds me! I always show my friends your site so mush so they are getting very tired of me!
    Thanks!

  69. I thought this was such a brilliant idea! I tried making them. However, I had some trouble when it came to the dipping stage. I couldn’t get mine to look smooth like yours! When I dipped mine in the chocolate, they turned out looking like a mess. I used semisweet chocolate chips. Does that make a difference? How did you do it?

  70. Here is the link to the Oreo Truffle recipe.
    http://www.bakerella.com/grocery-item-goes-gourmet/

  71. Was it hard to shape the mixture into football shapes? Do you have any tips/tricks on how to shape them?

  72. I keep clicking on the link for the recipe, but it doesn’t work. Getting frustrated!

  73. So, I’m pretty new to this, and I’m wondering two things:
    1) Can I use candy melts instead of bark here? I can’t seem to find chocolate bark anywhere (including on-line)! Any suggestions?
    2) What do you use to pipe on the laces? Just a white tube of decorating icing from the grocery store?
Thanks for your help and inspiration!

  74. I love, love, love these! I had to feature them in my Super Bowl Party post – http://thesoireecafe.com/2010/01/19/super-bowl-party/.

  75. Your work is AWESOME!! I can’t find oreo truffle recipe – help please!! Could I use brownies instead? How long will cake pops last? Is it better to store in Fridge or Freezer? Thanks

  76. Hi ! I want to make these but, like Suzanne, everytime I click the link to the recipe it takes me back to your home page! Help Please!

  77. Can you use brownie or something else as an alternative to the oreo truffle?

  78. these are adorable…your links to the recipe just take me to the opening page of your blog though.

  79. Hey Bakerella,

I was trying to make these and can’t get the shape right! How’d you get the points so perfect??

  80. I didn’t see this, when I had the idea to make cake pops shaped like little footballs. they turned out pretty good also! I piped on the threads and stripes in our team color, green!

  81. As the girlfriend of a football coach, I was so excited to see these. Football season never ends in our house. I’ve made Oreo truffles in the past, but I never thought of shaping and decorating them this way. So cute! Thanks for the adorable idea, Bakerella. You’re wonderful.

  82. You are so inspiring and fun!

  83. Kristin – it’s white candy coating. You can use a ziploc bag with the corner cut off.

  84. I was planning to make the oreo truffles for our tailgate this weekend. When I searched, I came up with these and they are adorable! But, since I’ve never made the recipe before and am not a baker, can you let me know what you use to pipe on the white? Do I have to go get tips and bags and make frosting or are those tubes of decorator stuff in the grocery store OK?

  85. You’re welcome Lauren. And rest assured. I have plenty of trial and error days.

  86. it is so encouraging to see that even the greatest have to go through “trial and error” days! thanks for all the fun ideas!

  87. I printed off a photo on 11X17 paper, but I can’t remember where I found it. I bet you can find some scrapbook papers with football themes.

  88. I plan on making these for our Superbowl party but was just curious as to where you got the football field paper. Did you make it? or perhaps print it from somewhere? I would love to use it.

  89. Hope you have fun with it Aubri!

  90. I just stumbled on your blog. Seriously, you are an artist. Amazing ideas! I can’t wait to try all different kinds of cake and icing and then dip them in chocolate…brilliant! I’ve been thinking of all kinds of yummy combinations all night…good thing I don’t have any coating chocolate, or I would already be busy! Thanks!

  91. Jennifer – It was white chocolate candy coating.

You can find it at Kroger in blocks or Hobby Lobby & Michaels at candy melts.

I just melted it and piped it on. You can use a ziploc bag or squeeze bottle.

  92. What type of icing do you use for the writing? My Hubby’s fantasy football draft is tomorrow and I think these would truly be a hit! :) You’re such an incredible baker, you INSPIRE me! :)

  93. Thank you so much! Your suggestion was very helpful and the cupcakes turned out beautifully. This is such a wonderful idea!

Thank you again for all your help!

  94. I dip the bottom side first – halfway, let them dry upside down and then turn them over and dip the tops. Mine can be thick too, but I try to wiggle it a little to let some of it ooze down the sides before I set it upside down. Hope that helps

  95. Bakerella,

How do you dip the cupcakes in chocolate and still maintain a smooth and neat cupcake? I can’t seem to keep the chocolate thin enough for dipping. Any suggestions/tips? They would be ever so helpful and appreciated.

    <3 Kari

  96. Yummy!

  97. I would have been fine with the blobs! Very cute!

  98. Steve – Thanks so much. I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I use a Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 lens and I love it. (it gives the DOF you like so much) I wish I could give you some photo tips, but to be honest, I keep the camera on auto most of the time and no flash. I just use natural light from the window and hope for good results. Oh, and I also use a set of macro rings for the really close shots. Glad you visited!

La’laila er vild med – Thanks, glad you liked the blobs.

    Christine – Thank you.

  99. I just stumbled across your blog and I haven’t tried a single recipe yet, but your food photos are AMAZING…keep up the great work!

  100. hehe, they are really nice!! and I also like the footBLOBs, hehe :D

  101. This is my first time visiting your site. WOW! I’m blow away by your ideas, but especialy your photography. I’ve been wanting to “archive” all the things I bake/cook, and I can’t tell you how much i love the look of your photos. Can you share some of your secrets? What kind of camera/lens do you use? How do you achieve that incredible depth of field with the focus? I love that. I swear your pictures could be in any high end cooking magazine. What about lighting? do you use a tripod? Anyway, I’m a fan, and am looking forward to following your site. I’d be very grateful for some pointers on the photography!
    Thanks,
    Steve

  102. Thanks for the tip Emma. I’ll check it out.

  103. This is so creative, what a great blog. You should link it to Martha Stewart’s blog and have her link back to yours!

I recently started baking as a hobby and I’ve been using recipes and guidelines from the book “Real Chocolates and Confections” http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_332124_chocolates_confections_reviews

It’s a great book for anyone else who wants to start a small business, or are just really interested in how chocolate making works!

  114. Football and the super bowl are totally not my thing, but I absolutely LOVE your football truffles. Your execution was right on. So, we live and learn and things like melting chocolate don’t quite go our way…but your second attempt was a great success!

  115. Haha glad you figured a better way to make those cute little footballs!

  116. Kelly – thank you.

Jessica – thanks. I thought the headline in ps might distract from my not so great piping :)

April – I know… but the cupcakes were so messy for me to make, I couldn’t manage the camera at the same time. Next time, I’ll get someone to take the pics for me.
