Sweet Soldiers

IMG_4878

My friend Cupcake Julie had her Christmas party this past weekend.

You may remember her gorgeous sugar-themed decorations.

IMG_4869

Stuff like this.

(Here’s the post from last year if you want to see visions of sugar plums dancing in your head for the next few days. Make sure you check out the kids play bakery, too. It’s incredible.)

It’s hard to imagine, but this year was even more beautiful than last.

IMG_4711

Colonel Cupcake was there again this year.

IMG_4838

And so was this guy.

IMG_4849

And this one.

IMG_4857

And this little one. These guys were all over the place.

You may also remember seeing them from the Toronto Book Signing Post.

Teatro Verde is the only store I’ve actually seen them sold in. It made me happy to see them on display.

Anyway, I love ’em. So festive and sweet.

As a surprise for Julie, I made a few cake pops inspired by them to bring to the party.

Wanna see?

IMG_4548

Cupcake Nutcracker guys.

She squealed. I smiled.

They’re double decker cake pops, too. Tricky and a little over the top, but I couldn’t resist.

I also made some Christmas Tree cake pops.

IMG_4592

Much easier. But instead of doing them in green, I kept them in her holiday color scheme.

I really like them like this.

Speaking of trees, Julie’s party decorations this year also included two new ones.

IMG_4832

This cheerful pink one covered in snowmen.

IMG_4791

And this whimsical upside down tree.

Amazing, huh.

IMG_4664

But that’s Julie.

IMG_4687

Here’s her dessert table. Filled with tons of treats.

IMG_4630

Cookies and candy.

IMG_4697

Cake Pops, of course.

IMG_4701

Mini cupcakes from Crumb in New York.

IMG_4650

Macarons and much, much more.

IMG_4722

Completely lovely. I wish you could have been there with me.

But since you weren’t … how about a couple of cute guys to keep you company?

IMG_4965

I just so happen to know of two that are about ten inches tall.

I thought I’d part with these to share them with one of you.

Enter for a chance to win these two sweet soldiers.

  1. Growing up in an Italian family we always had the 7 fish on Christmas Even and while I didn’t appreciate it as a child, I miss it now. My father would make a ragu di pesce with all sorts of wonderful seafood in it….scallops, shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams. Then there was always the obligatory fish that I refused to eat…something strange like eel. That I don’t miss!

  2. We always have enchiladas for Christmas, and I LOVE it!

  21. My fave. thing to eat on Christmas day is two fold:

In the morning, while opening presents, we bake a sausage/egg/cheese casserole that you make up the night before…That paired with some homemade nutbread is perfect.

    Happy Holidays!
Thank you for the chance to win!

  130. Love all the party pictures! I’m looking forward to Honey Ham with pineapple!

  131. In our family, we have a few very strict menu traditions and only change one or two dishes up every now and then. 141. My favorite thing to eat at Christmas is the ham sauce my mom has made for years…and I’m cheating a little, because it does have a little “sweet” to it, but the mixture of sweet with the tang of the A-1 sauce is amazing…it has 10oz. A-1 Sauce, 12 ounces thawed, frozen OJ concentrate, 1 to 1-1/2cups brown sugar (based on preference) and 2 cups crushed Dole pineapple from can (mostly drained). Mix all 4 together, and warm in saucepan to serve over ham or add to ham 30 minutes prior to removing from oven. Yum!

  156. Every Christmas, my mom and I always make these extra super tasty breafast rolls. Every Christmas Eve, my family and my husband’s family get together for an appetizer dinner. I love it. It’s super simple and completely non-fancy. 173. It is hard to narrow it down to one thing, but I suppose I do love my mother-in-laws hashbrown casserole!

  174. my favorite thing to eat on Christmas is our traditional dinner of homemade lasagna and rolls. Except we’re from Finnish and Welsh heritage and not italian (not stereotyping here but people always ask then if I’m italian…not that I look it or anything either) so I’m not sure why my mom makes lasagna on Christmas. She just does. Besides, I like it more than ham or your usual traditional Christmas dinner food so there you go.

  175. My favorite thing to eat on Christmas is beef tenderloin cooked to a perfect medium rare. With bistro potatoes on the side – of course!

  176. Oh Bakerella, I was SO hoping we would see another post of Julie’s party this year. WOW! And your cake pops fit right in with her ultimate sugary theme. Those pics you took would make some might fine Shutterfly cards, yes?

  181. there is food at Christmas that isn’t sweet? :) turkey, potatoes, and prime rib!!

  182. Honeybaked ham! Mmmm. Love this post, what a fabulous party!

  183. I can’t get enough Honey Baked Ham.

  184. My mom makes the best broccoli casserole… it is a favorite always but only tends to make its appearance around the Christmas season!

  185. Every year for Christmas morning we make a breakfast casserole (cheese, ham, bread/custard). Super yummy! Especially with monkey bread!

  186. In my Italian family, we celebrate Christmas Eve with feast of the seven fish in various steamed and fried variations. Along with Orecchiette and broccoli rabe, freets, homemade wine! It wouldn’t feel like Christmas if we didn’t celebrate its Eve!

  187. Love the carbs: potatoes, homemade dinner rolls, stuffing.

  188. I love twice baked potatoes and waldorf salad. Also, some really good bread always sets the tone of our Christmas meal. Merry Christmas!

  189. there’s nothing like good old fashioned rolls and some butter. :)

  190. This year I’m having a meat and cheese tray so everyone can make their own sandwiches, but also making stuffed shells and meatballs for something hot and yummy!

  191. I would have to say our traditional Filipino fare of pancit and lumpia…no traditional Filipino party is complete without these. :)

  192. My favorite thing to eat would have to be homemade potato soup. I have eaten two different versions and i lve them both. The traditional potato soup with the white sauce broth and the one my mom used to make. It has a vegetable soup look to it with only Potatoes, onions, and peas. Top with cheese and YUM.

  193. Sweet potato casserole …. my recipe is more like a dessert than a side dish and the one dish I am asked to bring to every holiday gathering!

  194. Christmas morning is always banana bread & bacon at my house…followed by a big dinner. Last year we did Mexican food…chips & salsa with tortilla soup. This year I think we’re going to do Italian…we’ll see:) I’m with you though…I am sugered out!

  195. My favorite…ham and cheesy potatoes!

  196. I love all of the food b/c I don’t have to cook it!! But, my mom’s homeade rolls are probably the best!!!

  197. I love tamales at Christmas. YUMMY! I also love ham with homemade rolls.

  198. One of my favorites is fondue on Christmas Eve. We have done it since I was a little girl! How fun to be surrounded with beautiful decorations and family this time of year!
