Cupcakes in Vegas

Cupcakes in Vegas

I was in Las Vegas over the Fourth of July and received the sweetest surprise!

Cupcakes in Vegas

Cupcakes!!! And lots of them.

Cupcakes in Vegas

They were from Kari and Brian of Retro Bakery. I “met” Kari through flickr when she was documenting her adventures in opening a bakery and I’ve been keeping up with her on Twitter, knowing that the next time I visited Las Vegas, I wanted to rent a car and surprise her at the bakery.

Fun! Fun! Fun! I’ve only been to a few cupcake bakeries. Sprinkles Cupcakes in Dallas and The Atlanta Cupcake Factory in Georgia. I know. There’s something enormously wrong with that picture. So I was really excited to see Retro and check out their cupcakes.

Big problem. Right before I left, she announced they were going to be closed on the day I could come visit. On vacation of all things. Just my luck. Needless to say, I was bummed.

But, Kari did the sweetest thing. She sent some to the hotel for me the last day they were open. The Fourth of July. I couldn’t believe it. I mean I’ve certainly never had cupcakes delivered to my room before. The bellman brought them up and for a minute I thought I was going to have to fight the guy for them. Even after I tipped him, he kept going on about them. I guess he wanted me to give him one. Well, that didn’t happen. Sorry Mr. Bellman. These were all staying with me!

Cupcakes in Vegas

Can you blame me. I mean look at them. They tasted just as good as they look. And really moist too.

Cupcakes in Vegas

In the back is Pink Lemonade (Lemon cake topped with pink lemonade buttercream and hot pink glitter sugar). In the front: Hop Scotch (Vanilla cake topped with vanilla buttercream dipped in butterscotch ganache) This was one of my favorites!

Cupcakes in Vegas

Here we have Cinnamon Toast (Vanilla cake topped with cinnamon buttercream dusted with cinnamon and sugar). YUM!

Cupcakes in Vegas

And here… Milk & Cookies (Chocolate-chip cake topped with vanilla buttercream and a freshly baked mini chocolate chip cookie.) This is all wrong and all right, all at the same time. Another fave!

Cupcakes in Vegas

Left: Apple Cider (Cinnamon swirl cake topped with apple cider buttercream dusted with cinnamon and sugar) Front: Mint Chocolate Chip (Chocolate cake topped with green mint buttercream and mini chocolate chips) Right: Red, White & Blueberry (Blueberry cake topped with strawberry buttercream) This might have been my most fave. But it’s a toss up with the Hopscotch.

Oh and, sorry about the lighting on some of these pics. The room didn’t have the best angle for natural light.

Cupcakes in Vegas

But who cares about lighting when you have this much chocolate to look at. Left: Chocolate Fountain (Chocolate cake topped with chocolate buttercream and dipped in chocolate ganache). Right: Chocolate Covered Banana (Chocolate cake topped with banana buttercream dipped in chocolate ganache and sprinkled with walnuts) Back: Peanut Butter Cup (Chocolate cake topped with peanut butter buttercream and dark chocolate shavings) Who am I kidding… these were all faves.

Cupcakes in Vegas

But I didn’t actually eat them then.

Cupcakes in Vegas

I left them all alone in the room while we went to get dinner. It was difficult, but I knew if I tasted even one, it would be all over. By the way, if you’ve been to Vegas, you can probably guess where I stayed by now.

Cupcakes in Vegas

And, later when we returned.

Cupcakes in Vegas

Let’s just say there was a little cupcake carnage during the taste testing. I won’t give you all the messy details, but I’m glad there wasn’t a camera filming me.

And the best thing about these cupcakes, was having the rest of them again for breakfast.

Cupcakes in Vegas

Thanks so much for the Retro cupcakes, Kari & Brian. I hope to really meet you guys next time.

Do you have a cupcake bakery in your area that you want to try? One that you love or one that you’ve just heard of? I would love to hear your recommendations.

She gave me a cupcake which she said she never ever does. It was awesome, I had the red velvet and thats what my cake was too. We went back another time while there and I had a mint chip cupcake and it was amazing!! Retro is awesome!

  47. The Milk & Coookies is too cute! I bet they were yummy.

  48. On July 3rd I went to Lola's Cupcakery on Las Olas Blvd, FL; and I loved! her site is at http://www.lolascupcakery.com – Lola was a pleasure to talk to as well. Totally recommend, but she doesn't ship her cupcakes; so you have to in the area to try them

  49. Have had Sprinkles in Dallas and the Cupcakery in Frisco, TX (suburb of Dallas). The Cupcakery is the TX location of the Vegas store. Cupcakes were beautifully decorated, and had cute names. Cake flavor was okay but dry, however, the icing was tasty! Someone else mentioned Society Bakery in Dallas…they have the BEST brownies.

  50. Oh my goodness, those must have floated down from Heaven. I don't very often ache with the desire to devour a cupcake until I saw these. I feel physical pain right now in my want. lol

I'm a very new viewer to your blog (my third visit I think) and I believe I will gain much weight while perusing your amazing blog!

    Kristi

  51. Those cupcakes look devine. I'm craving them now!

My favorite is Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Better than Magnolia if you ask me.

  52. I live in McKinney, TX, one of the fastest growing cities in the US, and number 9 on desirable places to live. :-) We LOOOOOVE "The Cake Stand," a small bakery in historic McKinney's square, near the old historic county courthouse for Collin County, TX.

The ladies at "The Cake Stand" make amazing cookies, cupcakes,…and cakes. Each time we get to the square, we stop at the bakery and purchase a 1-inch slice of their 6"x6" bar cakes, which are always in the cooler. The cake is so sweet that the three kids and I can share one slice and all be satisfied.

So…for my 40th birthday party (last week), we ordered a buttercream-frosted white cake with raspberry mousse filling. YUM, YUM! My guests really enjoyed the cake, but not as much as the birthday girl did!

    Check it out!

  53. I want to go to there.

  54. Hows come nobody's mentioned that the way she puts frosting on the cupcakes looks like somebody pooed on them? Seriously? Get a star tip, honey! I'm sure they taste great though.

  55. Oh boy! Mischa's Cupcakes here in Miami … I have no clue what that special ingredient she uses but all of her cupcakes are HEAVEN. I want some right now….mmmmm….

  56. Here in Austin, Texas we love "Hey Cupcake". They sell their cupcakes out of an airstream trailer. They are really yummy and the trailers are adorable, complete with a giant spinning cupcake on top.

  57. These cupcakes look so delicious!

  58. I live in the Twin Cities, and here there's an awesome place called Cupcake. Unlucky for my waistline, I work right down the street, and love to stroll on by there in the summer for a BLT and a June Cleaver cupcake. http://www.cup-cake.com/
I grew up in New Orleans, and on a recent trip there, I was on Magazine St. for the GRAND OPENING of a new cupcake shop there – Bee Sweet Cupcakes. http://www.beesweetcupcakes.com/
Adorable place with adorable ladies. They were up all night making their cupcakes, and by the time I got there at 2pm, they were out of two kinds! I still hear rumblings about their greatness from my friends living there.

  59. There are 259 comments before me- so you may already have this info- but if you're ever in the Sonoma County CA area, you should DEFINITELY try Sift Cupcakery- in Cotati CA. http://www.siftcupcakery.com/
Love them!! Love your blog too- makes me want to go whip up some buttercream and bake sumtin. :D

  60. Okay, you guys are totally making me want to go on a road trip. I need to check out some of the cupcake shops IMMEDIATELY.

  61. That Cookies and Milk cupcake looks to die for.

Saint Cupcake in Portland, Oregon is a cute little bakery with great cupcakes. The lemon cupcake with a berry glaze is my personal favorite. Their cream cheese frosting is amazing also.

  62. There's one i tried recently in Richmond, VA – Too Sweet Cupcakes – and the cupcakes were great! The shop was so cute too, and they displayed each cupcake variety they had that day on individual mini covered cake stands!

  63. Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but if you're in the Nashville area, Gigi's Cupcakes is the place to go!

  64. Here in Denver, CO, I've used Happy Cakes (http://www.happycakesdenver.com/) to HUGE satisfaction. Mmmm those custom flavors! They had a french toast cupcake that was to die for – and they even delivered to our office for a special birthday.

  65. hi bakerella! im a huge fan and this is the first time im leaving a comment :) i LOVE Frosted Cupcakery in downtown Long Beach, CA. They have cupcakes with ice cream centers!! Their other cupcakes are quite good too, but I mean…how can you pass up a mixture of some of the best stuff on earth…cupcakes + frosting+ ICE CREAM. YESSS.

    -T

  66. ok…did you stay at the Palms?

  67. Holy smokes there's lots of comments! I apologize if this is a repeat but if you are even in San Francisco, I recommend going to the old ferry landing and visiting the huge farmers market period, but there's a place that sells super moist and beautiful and delicious cupcakes in there: http://www.miettecakes.com/
If in San Diego, where I live, we have "Heavenly Cupcakes. I am unimpressed. I hate saying that.

  68. I agree with several above, I LOVE Georgetown Cupcakes. My favorite is the "Cherry Blossom," only available in April, alas, but their chocolate varieties are also amazing. Yum.

  69. I would LOVE a bundt pan or tartlet pan(s)!

  70. Those cupcakes look delicious! I have been meaning to stop by Retro Bakery every time I am near Vegas, but time has not allowed it. I will be nearby next month so hopefully I will get to chance to try those yummy-looking cupcakes!

  71. I live in Vegas and have several friends who rave about Retro Bakery, it's not very far from me after seeing your pictures I am going to HAVE to get over there!

  72. There are several pans I would love to have. I live in an area that demands mail order due to the fact that there are very few specialty stores. Love your site!!

  73. I've tried lots of cupcake bakeries during my travels yet the best is right here in my hometown of St. Louis, MO – The Cupcakery – cravethecup.com

  74. All I know is that I've seen AND eaten GOBS of cupcakes in my time, but these are BY FAR the most gorgeous and creative! Oh how I wish I could visit this bakery! I think it's hightime I ventured out and found a cupcake shop somewhere in the near vicinity…….
    ~Heather

  75. Wait I'm sorry, did you say you were in Vegas over the holiday or did you say HEAVEN?… YUM!!

  76. I live in Little Rock, AR and we have a cupcake bakery here called "Cupcakes". It's so cute! You've got to drop in if you are ever in the area!

  77. i would have to say that i want to visit my very OWN cupcake store in the very very near future! have the name picked out, trying to find a location (that i can afford), and scribbling down ideas for cupcakes. :) i'll let you know when i open and you can come and visit!

  78. The best cupcake place in Nashville is Gigi's Cupcakes! They have big cupcakes piled high with icing in tons of fun and creative flavors!! They also come in cute boxes to make a fun gift!

  79. My favorite cupcakery is Frosted located in Long Beach ca. I want to try 'crumbs' in Glendale next time!

  81. I visit LV once a month to see the grandbaby and will have to go!!
    Thanks for telling us..

  82. I dont know of any cupcake bakeries… However, there is a doughnut place that is pretty popular in Portland, oregon. Voodoo Doughnuts… MMMMMMMM :D

  83. I live in Vegas, & my cousin actually just did a photo shoot in Retro! So awesome! LOVE RETRO! & another good one here, 'The Cupcakery'! mmmm… cupcakes….

  84. OMG.

    Wow wow wow.

That is all I can say.

  85. I'm going to second Swirlz in Chicago. They are soooo over the top delicious!

  86. OK, I have seriously come back to look at these pics like 12 times already today. That cinnamon buttercream looks so impossibly thick & creamy I want to lick my screen! And the Hop Scotch? Oh. My. Gosh. Reminds me of those hand-dipped soft serve cones from childhood. You must have great willpower, because with those delectable cupcakes in my room, i would have NEVER been able to leave for dinner!

Alas there are no cupcake bakeries nearby, but my absolute dream is to open one someday!

  87. NYC – Crumbs vs. Magnolia's. I like Crumbs better. But Magnolia's can hold their own.

Take a look and see what you think:
    http://www.crumbs.com/
    or
    http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com/

  88. In Hamilton, Ontario Canada there is a place that sells the most amazing cupcakes

    Cupcakes
1050 King Street West, Hamilton, ON L8S 1L5
    Telephone : 905-308-8484

  89. If you ever visit seattle you must go to http://trophycupcakes.com/ – my all time favorite!

  90. We love Retro Bakery's cupcakes. My sister brought us some that same weekend. Was the blueberry one in that assortment anywhere? Oh it was so good. We just moved and are closer to it now. Love them!

  91. Oh my goodness! Those cupcakes look positively SINFUL! I guess they would be since they were made in "Sin City!" LOL! It never occurred to me to make all those different kinds of buttercream! I'm going to have to try that! I just recently made a spice cake with cinnamon buttercream and it was so delicious. What should I try next? Banana buttercream? Peanut Butter Buttercream? Oh, the choices!!!!

  92. I'm borrowing bread pans.. I mean Loaf pans from my mother still! However, I could keep borrowing and have you pick me up any of those lovely graduating cake pans!

  93. those cupcakes look disgusting!

  94. There are two good cupcake places that I've been to in the Boston area: Sweet and Kickass Cupcakes. Very different styles. I find that KC cupcakes tend to be a bit drier, and that their vegan cupcakes are better than their non-vegan cupcakes. Sweet is more of the classic cupcake look.

  95. cupcakesbyliz.com –No storefront, sadly. Have to order ahead. So far I've only had them once, when an assortment of 6 flavors showed up at work one morning. Best day at work EVER. I'd sooner jab an eye than pick a favorite flavor.

  96. Back In the Day Bakery in Savannah is another good one. They were recently on some MSN list for top bakeries or something like that.

  97. Next time you're in Dallas – go to Society Bakery – their chocolate petit fours and red velvet cupcakes are to die for! The buttercream isn't tooth-ache sweet – Ellen Degeneres named it one of the best cupcakes in America.

  98. There is a little cupcake shop in Richmond, VA where I'm from called Two Sweet that has the most amazing cupcakes. It's run by two middle age mothers who were originally SAHMs. Their cupcakes are made fresh every day and I hear they sell out daily as well. They have a different menu each day. The raspberry cheesecake cupcake is my personal favorite. We picked up a big special order of them for our wedding rehersal dinner as a special "surprise" dessert.

  99. I've seen them in a couple of the comments, but Bleeding Heart bakery in Chicago is awesome bc they offer lots of gluton-free and vegan cupcakes/cakes. BUT I have to say that Molly's Cupcakes is by far my favorite place to get cupcakes here. They opened in the middle of February 2 yrs ago and have had a line out the door since. You can customize your cupcakes (flavors and frostings) AND they have a sprinkle bar for accessorizing your cupcake. And while you're enjoying your cupcake, you can sit at the bar on a swing (seriously!) and enjoy a cup of a locally roast coffee or you can enjoy a game of scrabble, rock'm sock'm robots, or even connect 4. I heart Molly's.

  100. I am a huge fan of Dozen in Pittsburgh. http://www.dozencupcakes.com/index.html

  101. Austin TX is home of the cupcakery!! They are everywhere. Austinite think that cupcakes are must have items–so there are TONS o great places.

    http://www.heycupcake.com/splash.html
Hey cupcake! Is an airstream trailer with a rotating pink cupcake on the top. Very popular.

    http://www.sugarmamasbakeshop.com/
Sugar mama's is my fave–very retro and chic and TASTY!

    http://cupprimo.com/
    Cupprimo is fun too

    http://www.delish-cupcakes.com/
Delish is our newest one–they brought some to my work and I got busy with the chocolate cupcakes with edible glitter! YUM

  102. Those sound/look SOOOOOOOO good!!!

  103. next time i'm in vegas, i'm definitely trying out retro bakery!!

and if you're in portland, or, you have to go to saint cupcake. it's the cutest shop with some of the best flavors.

and i second all the votes for trophy cupcakes in seattle! :)

  104. Excalibur? Driving me crazy out of curiosity!

  105. Southport Grocery in Chicago is amazing. I make my husband bring me some when he takes business trips to Chicago. Their cupcake pancakes are very good too!

    http://www.southportgrocery.com/

I've also heard Chicago does a cupcake crawl. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good cupcake place in Orlando?

  106. Great post! I love your blog.

If you're ever in St. Louis, drop by "The Cupcakery" in the central west end. You'll be glad you did!

  107. Zippo cupcake experts in my area, although my three boys say I am the queen of the cupcake in their mind… (does that count?)

  108. We probably do, but I never seem to find them– or if I do, they are never open when I am there. :-( So, I usually just make our own for us.

But, we have some fantastic ice cream in town, small and large– Jeni's, Mardi Gras, Denise's, Graeter's, Rita's, etc. Flavors as diverse as saffron, gravel road (smoked almonds in salty caramel ice cream), passion fruit sorbet, cashew-raisin, mango, lime cardamom, lavendar, thai chili, honey vanilla bean, strawberry rose petal, goat cheese with roasted red cherries, etc.

I'm thinkin' that some of these ice cream flavor profiles could be applied to cupcakes. Or, some of the ice cream could be used to make cupckaes!!! ;-)

    Just a thought…

  109. Those look AMAZING!!! Yum!

A couple recommendations: If you're ever in Austin, Hey Cupcake (heycupcake.com) is a pretty fun cupcake stand. And a friend of mine in NYC works at Crumbs Bake Shop (crumbs.com) and loves it, so I plan to check it out next time I'm in the city. Their cupcakes make my mouth water!

  110. Here in Oklahoma City we have three cupcake bakeries, though I can only remember the names of two of them. One is the coziest little spot called Cuppies and Joe. It's in a 1920's bungalow and there are couches and mismatched chair inside and the cupcakes are served on mismatched china and depression glass plates and the gals that work in there are SO sweet. I've taken my kids for cupcakes there a few times and the are pretty tasty. There is another place just down the road from Cuppies and Joe called Sara Sara Cupcakes, and it is very modern and sleek and everything is white on white on white which looks really cool, but we've never been cause I'm not taking a 4 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old into an all white establishment. lol.

  111. we have 3 (supposedly) cupcakerys where I live. I have only been able to find an address on two and have been to one. We were severly disappointed. The cupcakes were smaller than a regular sized cupcake but 3.75 each. I would have been fine with that if they were more than 2 bites. Then the cake was kinda gross. All their stuff had this kind of artificial taste… and not creative combos like at Retro.

  112. here in northwest ohio (toledo) we have "cake in a cup" there are lots of yummy flavors just like some of the ones you were given. The pink lemonade sounds devine…you should work out a cake pop in the shape of a glass of lemonade and work it out.

  113. I actually live not 10 minutes from Retro Bakery. Been dying to stop by and give them a try. Now it seems I have a handy little excuse!

  114. Well, I just found your blog, and I'm SUCH a huge fan already – just trying to step into this whole cupcake thing, and I'm a bit obsessed with it…Your pictures are also AMAZING!!!! Thanks for all the info, insight and inspiration!!!!

  115. Oh yummy! I can't believe the cookie on top of the cupcake! In the DC area, the best cupcakes I've had are at Georgetown Cupcake!

  116. Caryn's Cakes on Marietta Street in Atlanta is amazing. I'm addicted. They have a Vanilla Chai cupcake that I can not get enough of

  117. oh so yummy..there is a place outside of Vancouver, Canada..called tracy cakes…so good..www.tracycakes.com
