Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  13. I have been reading your blog, buying your books, for a long time, but have never commented. You are in my prayers. My mom is on her second transplanted kidney and is doing so well. 18 years is fantastic and I know you should be able to do well with a second transplant. You are definitely in my prayers and I will ask my mom to pray for you as well. Things have progressed so far since my mom’s first transplant. The medications, the recuperation time, are so much better. Also, it seems like they are able to match organs that wouldn’t have worked so well in the past. God bless you and I’m looking forward to you being back in the swing of things very soon.

  14. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I wish you the best of luck during this hard time. Thank you for all the cute and happiness you’ve shared with us through your blog! We’ll be here when you’re feeling better. Hope you have a speedy recovery! Hang in there =)

  36. I pray for You and Your family!

  37. Prayers are with you. We have a neighbor who’s daughter caught a virus after a year and a half after her kidney transplant. She has had kidney disease since she was 6. Her strength is amazing. She graduated top of her class in High School and is attending her first year of college as she waits for another kidney. She had to chose a college close to Yale where she had her first transplant and where they had to remove her kidney. She has been doing dialysis for about 2 years now as she waits for a kidney. Her dorm room is set up so she can do it herself at night. I so admire her courage and strength and I hope that you can pull some hope and strength from this and know that you have so many people praying for you right now. And that your mom will be a match, but if not, know that it is possible to sustain for quite some time without one.

    Blessings-

  98. Lots of hugs and many prayers! I first discovered your website this summer when I became unemployed. I can’t begin to tell you how the idea of cake pops lifted my spirits and kept my creative juices flowing versus just being “down” due to a lack of employment. I will keep you in my prayers. Hoping for a donor ASAP!

  99. Sending warm thoughts and prayers your way.

  100. I know you cant possibly read ALL of your comments but I need you to know something. I was reading your post and crying my eyes out. I don’t know you, we have never met but you need to know something. When you finally do have to give up that kidney you are NOT letting that donor or their family down. You have lived a fun, happy life and been out living your dream. That is what that persons family would have wanted for their loved one. I have a friend who’s little boy has a donor organ in his little body and so I understand those feelings you are having. You do the best you can to take care of yourself and I will pray for a quick match and healing in your body. God is good and faithful and knows what you need when you need it.

  101. Wishing you nothing but the very, very best outcomes. I had no idea you had a transplanted kidney and what a wonderful gift you’ve had for 18 years! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for nothing but the best outcome for you!!

  102. another {hug} and some earnest prayers lifting you up – thanks for all you do to inspire little ol’ me…

  106. I was so worried that this was the cause of your absence when I saw those bold red lips up on your site for so long. Just know that we, your faithful readers, love you and are sending you our best thoughts, wishes, prayers, and good good good vibrations your way!! We’ll hold your spot and await your healthy return.

  107. This brings me to tears as my mother is also in the hospital with the same problem. She is in stage 4 and she will start dialysis in the future. This is a scary thing because no one in our family has been on it. It has made our entire family very sad. i really dont know what to think about this whole illness. I wish you a speady recovery.

My prayers are with you and your family. May our Heavenly Father bless your home.

  108. Prayers are with you and your Family. If there is anything any of us can do, I hope you know we would do it in a heart beat!

  109. (hugs) and prayers for you.

  110. Long time reader, first time commenter. I just wanted to say: sending you big virtual hugs and positive thoughts and prayers! You always have such a great attitude and an infectious smile – hang in there!

  111. You’ve shared so much of your talents and creativity with us, and we are so grateful. Now as you share this personal side of your life, we ache with you and pray for you. Having watched a young friend recover from the miracle of a bone marrow transplant this year, I wish the same speedy and successful outcome for you.

  112. i hope you have a fast recovery.

  113. Hi Bakerella! I never knew you had a transplant! My father has had 2 kidney transplants and ironically I am a kidney transplant nurse coordinator in Buffalo, NY. It’s so bizarre that this has been my carerr for almost 16 years and my own father has needed our services. I understand about the emotions both as a professional and as a family member. When my father lost his first transplant and had to go back on dialysis it was sooooo hard! I felt like we mourned a death, which we did, the death of his precious organ. Please don’t lose faith, he was fortunate to have a second transplant and we know and treat everyday as a gift from the sacrifice of another. Maybe if your mother doesn’t work out as a donor, one of your website followers will volunteer to be tested as a donor for you. I am so glad you posted your story, because I tell my patients that they need to find the courage to share their story so that people can offer to be tested for them. I wish you the best.

  114. To everything there is a season. Right now- yours is working on getting better and I will help by lifting you and your mom in prayer. So many people care about you.

  115. Bakearella-

My thoughts are with you and I’m wishing you all the best!

Through all the 1,877 comments though, I didn’t see anyone offer you to test to be a donor match (unless I missed it -then I apologize!)…..

If there’s any way your adoring fans can be tested, please let us know!!!

  116. I’m sending healing wishes for you, all the way from Argentina. Get well soon!!! we’re here for you.

  117. Praying for you and for a complete, speedy recovery!

  118. Bakerella, praying that you all have Godly wisdom and guidance in this heart-wrenching situation. I pray that you all will have peace and comfort that surpasses all understanding. May you constantly feel God’s Ever Loving Arms around you. God is the best doctor, and no matter what the “human” doctors say, God has the power and ability to change things if he chooses to do so. There are some things that we may never understand, but hold tightly to God and know that you all are loved! Hugs to you and your family! In Christ’s Love, Christina

  119. Thoughts and payers…. get well soon.

  135. Get well soon, dear Bakerella.

  136. Bakerella-I’m so sorry to hear about your health and it’s turn for the worse. Prayers are with you-God is with you and will carry you through this. Remember, He walks through the fire with us. My sister just has a bone marrow transplant in August in hopes of curing her leukemia, so I have a small idea of the stress you and your body are under. Take a break from work/baking/etc if you need to and focus on your health. You are sorely missed but are with us all each time we eat a cupcake, see a cake pop in starbucks (you’re famous!-you cracked into corporate!), bake, etc. We’re all fighting with/for you. -Sheila H.

Quite contrary to your profession…right? When I was beginning to put my blogsite together I searched for a model site. I chose yours. This was just before you changed your look to what you have currently. I loved the change and modeled my FITNESS (ha) site after yours. I try to use pics (though fitness pic are not as pretty as yours!) and a FUN style like Bakerella. I have written a book also and was so excited to see your book! I share my story with you so you can see that not only have you touched the lives of all these kitchen divas you have also touched my life! Stay strong. You will make it through and life will be even better! Thanks for being my business model. Lots of love. Mary
