Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  1. I hope everything works out for you. We really appreciate all you do and we hope you are feeling better soon! Good luck with everything and know that we are thinking of you.

  2. 18 years is AMAZING! My husband had his first transplant at 21 and it lasted just over 5 years – his mother was the donor. So, we’re familiar with your feelings of “letting down” the donor – but these things are our of our control. My husband is currently a PD patient – completing his dialysis daily from home.

Today is World Kidney day – here’s hoping you get a transplant and quickly!

Thanks so much for all of the inspiration – after buying your book and making cake balls a few times, I fell in love and am now dreaming and working on starting a bakery!

Happy thoughts to you and your fam.

That’s a tough thing that you have to go through – but you are so inspirational to so many people. Me included. I just love how positive you’ve always been all during your tour – maybe that’s how i can give back – by collecting one week in the year :)

  174. I am so sorry. My dad was not a transplant candidate, he was on dialysis for 14 years. I will pray for you every day and hope your mom is a donor. I know being a mom, it would mean so much to be able to do this for my child.
    (((hugs)))

  176. You have given us so much cheer and happiness, please take the time to rest and be well while we return the favor. You are a brave and special woman and I hope that everything works out for you and your family.

  177. Saying prayers for you…
Not sure if you’ve heard of the Kidney Chain, but just in case…
If your mom isn’t a match perhaps you could look into the “Kidney Chain”. It’s a program aimed at increasing the donor pool by giving people who are unable to receive a kidney from a loved the opportunity to receive a kidney through an exchange between incompatible donor-recipient pairs. Your mom would agree to donate to someone else in the chain who matches her.
Best of luck for a speedy recovery.

  178. You are such an inspiration to us all!! Best wishes for a speedy recovery and please know that you are in our continued prayers!!

  179. Wishing you the very best.I hope you mom is a match. My thoughts and prayers are coming you way.

  181. Thank you for sharing, I was beginning to worry as everyone also was. Having a positive attitude, like yours, is one of the greatest things to help you through. And you are not letting your deceased owner down, the kidney served you a great 18 years and I’m sure that he/she could have not asked for more!!! I hope all works out for the best and you will be in my thoughts and prayers! Feel better soon!!! :-)

This site above is the site you can link to to sign up and recieve email updates on this story: I think God has placed you and this precious little girl in my path so that I can have you all meet!!!! I have never been more certain about anything than this!! God bless you and your journey!! Prayers headed your way!!
From the first day Charley was born (Oct 2009), her parents were aware that Charley had one kidney that did not developed. Although this was tough news for them to hear, the good news was that her right kidney functioned at 100%! Her parents were told that in order to protect the good kidney, the bad one would have to eventually be removed. The doctor’s suggestion was to wait until she was between 14-16 mos. old and then we would take care of it. Charley has managed to live the first 15 mos of her life without even the slightest problem from her kidneys. She has been the picture of health. In spite of this, the doctor still insisted it was necessary to remove the bad kidney. Her parents took his word for it and scheduled the surgery for January 24th, 2010.On that Monday morning, they checked into Christus Shumpert Hospital in Shreveport. They were told this procedure was routine and that it should only take a couple of hours, three at the most. At 7:15 they took our Charley to the operating room. She made them feel so good as she looked back at them and waved, “Bye, bye!” Three hours and a bit more, they were summoned to the recovery room and told that Charley was great and getting ready to wake up. They felt relief and thanked God for seeing their little girl through the surgery. After a few hours in recovery they noticed that she had not passed as much as one drop of urine. After 7 hrs of waiting with no results, they decided to do an ultrasound to see what could be holding up her good kidney from passing urine. Imagine their shock when the ultrasound tech said she couldn’t find the kidney! They told us it was probably just because of the air they used to expand the abdomen and that they would repeat the ultrasound with the radiologist and surly he would have better results. Their hearts sank when he was unable to locate the kidney at all! At this point, they regrouped, reviewed past scans and decided to do a nuclear scan and surely this would explain everything. At approximately 8:00 PM, her doctor came to the room and told them that somehow, when removing the bad kidney, he found that the bad kidney to be the shape of a horseshoe and in attempting to remove the entire bad kidney, he compromised the good kidney and now there was no longer any function left. As a matter of fact, he had actually removed it as well. Hence the empty ultrasounds. They were devastated. The only thing left to do at this point was to transfer Charley to Children’s Hospital in Dallas and prepare her for dialysis and kidney transplant. They were in shock. Just hours ago,They had a happy, healthy little girl full of life and energy and now they are faced with the possibility of who knows what. They left Christus Shumpert at 11:00 PM via ambulance and arrived at Children’s Hospital around 1:00AM. Within minutes they were working on Charley and doing everything possible to help their little girl.Charley got headed back to surgery to have her dialysis port put into her abdomen. The plan was to continue with dialysis until Charley is at leat 45lbs. and then use and adult donor for a kidney transplant. They planned on using a type of dialysis that would allow them to do at home every evening. This would allow Charley a simi shot at a normal lifestyle rather than long days at dialysis centers. This machine did not work so they had to move her to doing dialysis every other day, this did not work she is/was retaining too much fluid, they moved her to dialysis every day and she has now movee to the Ronald Mcdonald house. (They have decided to not wait until she is 45 lbs since she is having such an issue with dialysis)
They will start looking for a match (as soon as she is well and out of the hospital at the RMDH)for a donar kidney right a way and know when the time is right for Charley to have the transplant that they have a plan in place and will be ready to go.

Your advice will help this young family and young girl see what their future might hold for them!! Please consider sharing your life with her! God bless you!
